Carol's POV
With Leila's future out of my hands, I elected to bring baby Leila home with me. Maxim teasingly thought that it was a good thing that I get to practice how to be a mom in the future but I am still a student for goodness sake. I don't even know how to wipe my own snot sometimes which is quite gross to some. I couldn't just wave out my hand and let the power seep into my soul to change things. Even I knew the limitations of my magic.
I fluttered my fingers at an empty spot near my bed to conjure a baby crib. It was one of the easiest spells that I have learned from my grandmother, the art of conjuring. Inanimate objects are easier to make specially if you have a specific look to go for. I have been conjuring dresses, furniture and cooking ingredients for the past years and I have been learning a lot. Anything for the coven.
Leila has been quiet for sometime. I gave her a pacifier to suckle and she is currently looking at me with her clear green eyes almost accusing me with what had happened.
"I'm really sorry, Leila. I didn't know she was going to do that. I wish you didn't have to take the spell for me. I can handle it better." I chided her while chucking at Leila's chin. She pushed the pacifier off her mouth.
"You have a lot of explaining to do."
My eyes widened as Leila's voice came out of her baby bow lips. It seems that the spell was not as permanent as it seems.
"Oh God, you can talk! It's amazing!" I breathed in joy as I raised her up in my arms. I laughed joyously.
"Hey stop that! It's making me vomit!" Leila whined.
I laughed at her expression. It was so weird seeing Leila's expression and words coming from the cute baby. But I was so thankful the spell seems to be wearing off a bit. I was worried that Leila would have to be forced to be like this for the rest of her life but then again she might not be so happy with the way I was thinking.
I placed her on the bed, pillows cushioning her back. Leila looked at me solemnly while opening her dimpled hands and wiggling them experimentally.
I knelt in front of her and looked her in the eyes, my face contorted in misery.
"I'm really sorry you had to become like this." I placed my hands on her small legs and rubbed gently. I could have sworn that she rolled her eyes at me before she smiled a toothy grin. I smiled with a watery grin.
"Yeah, yeah, I know. I'll do whatever I can to work this out."
"I don't want to go through preschool and high school all over again." She commented dryly. I chuckled at that. Thinking that this spell could take that long, I shuddered inwardly.
God I hope not.
"You know, you might be a bit magical yourself." I muttered as I propped my chin on my hand and watched her as she was playing with her fingers. She fixed her baby doe eyes at me.
"Why do you say that?" She asked.
"The hex that was placed on you was supposed to kill me so that Mariana can transfer the mating bond from me to her. But since you were human and was not mated to any of the werewolves during the assembly, the magic she made had a different effect on you. Instead of killing you outright to stop the mating bond, she turned you into a baby." I still couldn't get over the fact that my childhood friend has become, quite literally, a child.
"Then I probably should have thanked her for turning me into a baby than killing me?" This time Lei did roll her eyes. I smirked with her. I mean really it was so funny. A witch turning the target into a baby! How it might have burned her a*s.
"Where is a fairy godmother when you need one?" Leilani complained while turning on her belly and flailing her arms and legs, all the while smiling a toothy grin. She was really an adorable baby.
"Don't worry, girl! I'll be your fairy godmother. The only thing we need to worry about is how are we going to change you back." I promised her as she crawled towards me. I placed my hands under her arms and picked her up.
Leilani giggled in her baby way and I joined with her even though my words felt hollow. I can't afford to ruin my friend's life. She is my only family.
*****
The next morning, I was woken up from my sleep when a hand slammed on to my face. Squinting, I saw baby Leilani crawling energetically on my chest and slapping me awake. I grunted moodily and picked up Lei from the bed. We made our way to the bathroom where I had to bathe her and change her. One of my assistants left clothes for us on my bed. I had to dress Lei on the cute light blue dress that was laid out for her. She was silent throughout the whole thing, even making eyes at me while I combed her hair and added a cute red bow on her head. When we were done, she smirked at her get up.
"What am I? Anne of Green Gables?" Leilani muttered dryly.
I laughed at that. I didn't realize that she might take dressing up as a kid as a little insulting to her pride as a woman.
"Hey, you are a kid now you know." I huffed while smirking.
I picked her up and we both ate at the kitchen while Leilani kept on muttering about having to eat crap. I asked my assistants to prepare a banana puree for her and she was not impressed. I would have loved to give her something to eat but she doesn't look like she can handle eating something hard for her small teeth.
Prudence found us still seated on the breakfast table.
"I'm sorry to bother you, Carol but I wanted to give you a report on the undoing of the hex."
I nodded my head before gesturing towards one of the chairs. Leilani was busy mashing the banana before scooping some into her mouth. Prudence sat on the chair opposite mine and tried to smile at us but lost her nerve and twiddled her fingers.
"I have spoken to Mariana about what she did. I found out she made a human sacrifice in order to conjure enough dark magic for the hex to be successful."
I worriedly placed my spoon down. Dark magic in itself is something all witches avoid in order to coexist with other supernatural creatures. Sacrificing a human to complete a ritual is also a taboo in our circle. Harm none - that is our credo as witches. We have learned from our mistakes from the Salem witch hunt and have become the champions of the humans against werewolves and vampires. This is the first time I have encountered a dark witch like Mariana.
"If she doesn't find her mate, she will die on the next full moon."
