Chapter Four: Into the Shadow

671 Words
The scream that had echoed through the forest still rang in Aria’s ears. Elias’ terrified voice had been cut off too soon, leaving her heart hammering. Kael’s hand on her shoulder was steady, but it was not comforting. It was a reminder that in this world, every alliance was as dangerous as the enemy. “You need to control it,” Kael said quietly, eyes locked on hers. “The wolf inside you is strong, but reckless. Recklessness gets people killed.” Aria swallowed, focusing on the tremor in her chest. Control. She had tried, so many times, to keep the wolf in check. Yet every night, every threat, made it harder. She had to save Elias, but she had to survive too. Liora stepped out of the shadows, moving closer, her eyes glinting like shards of ice. “He’s just a boy,” she said. “And yet, he is the key. Protecting him will make you weaker. Do you want to be weak, Aria Vale?” Aria’s claws itched beneath her skin. The wolf inside roared in protest, but she forced it down. “I do what I must,” she said, her voice firm despite the fear. “Nothing will stop me from keeping him safe.” Liora smiled, a slow, predatory curl of her lips. “Then prove it.” Before Aria could respond, Kael grabbed her hand, pulling her into the trees. “Follow me,” he ordered. They moved quickly, silent as shadows, deeper into the forest where the fog was thick and the moonlight barely touched the ground. “Where are we going?” Aria demanded, keeping her voice low. “To see the truth,” Kael replied. “To understand what your family’s deaths really meant. You need to know if you are going to survive this world.” They reached a clearing where the earth was torn, trees splintered, and blood staining the ground. Wolves from rival packs circled a pit in the center, their eyes glowing with fury. And at the bottom, a figure struggled against ropes—Elias. Aria’s heart froze. Every instinct screamed to charge, but Kael’s hand tightened on her wrist. “Wait,” he said. “Do not act without a plan. If you do, he dies.” Liora stepped forward from the shadows, her face illuminated by the pale moon. “The only way to save him is to face your true self,” she said softly, almost kindly, and then her tone hardened. “But that is just the beginning. The packs will not forgive weakness. They will not forget your family’s blood. You are the legacy of something they fear.” Aria’s mind spun. Her parents’ deaths, the fire, the lies she had been told—they were all pieces of a puzzle she had never seen. And now, she was at the center of it, her brother’s life hanging by a thread. Her wolf growled, furious and hungry, and she realized that control was no longer an option. She had to embrace the beast to save what she loved. Kael’s eyes gleamed in the moonlight. “Do it,” he said simply. “Show them who you are. But remember, Aria, once the wolf takes over, there is no turning back.” Aria inhaled deeply. The scent of blood, fear, and the forest filled her senses. Her body shifted, bones reshaping, muscles tensing, teeth elongating. The world around her blurred as the wolf fully emerged. The pack outside the clearing froze. Even the rival wolves halted their advance, sensing the predator that now stood among them. And then a howl rang out from the shadows—deeper, older, and more terrifying than anything Aria had heard. A giant black wolf emerged from the darkness, eyes burning red, teeth bared. Liora’s eyes widened in shock. Kael’s jaw tightened. Aria growled low, muscles coiled, heart pounding, and knew instinctively that this was no ordinary enemy. This was something that could destroy everything. The wolf lunged.
