Chapter One: The Forest’s Secret
The scream tore through the night, jagged and desperate. Aria Vale froze at the edge of the forest, her breath clouding in the cold autumn air. She had promised herself she would never come this close again. The woods were dangerous, unpredictable, alive in ways that made her skin crawl.
But the scream called to something deep inside her, something primal. Her chest tightened, senses sharpened, and the pull of the full moon whispered through her veins: Run, hunt, protect.
She clutched the silver pendant at her throat, her mother’s last gift before the fire that had taken her parents. Not tonight, she whispered, not again.
The scream came again, closer now, frantic and human. Her wolf instincts urged her forward, yet reason screamed to turn back. She should run home, warn her brother, pretend she had heard nothing. Then the wind shifted and she caught the scent. Blood, fear, and something familiar. Her own kind.
A rustle behind her made her spin. A tall figure stepped into the moonlight. His eyes glowed gold, his movements smooth, almost predatory.
Funny thing about secrets, he said, his voice both smooth and cutting, they never stay buried.
Aria’s blood ran cold. He should not be here, not near the village, not near her. She swallowed and whispered his name. Kael. Kael Draven, heir of the Bloodfang Pack, a man known for ruthlessness and cunning.
He smiled, a dangerous tilt of his lips. I know what you are, he said. I know what you are hiding.
Her heart slammed against her ribs. Her secret, the thing she had fought to bury, was no longer hers alone.
Kael stepped closer, the moonlight reflecting off the sharp planes of his face. He made no move to harm her, but the tension in the air was enough to make her skin prickle. The forest seemed to hold its breath.
If you want to survive what is coming, he said, you will need to make choices you were never prepared for.
Aria’s instincts screamed at her to run, to flee into the night and leave him behind. But her mind screamed louder. Her brother was out there somewhere, vulnerable, innocent. She could not risk his life.
A twig snapped behind them, loud and sharp. They both turned. A shadow moved among the trees, faster than a human should have been able to move. Liora. The rogue wolf who had been watching her for weeks. Her motives were unknown, her allegiance uncertain, but her appearance never meant anything good.
Aria’s heart leapt. She needed answers, but she also needed to survive the night. One wrong step and everything could end.
Kael’s eyes narrowed as he followed her gaze. So, she said, you brought a friend. Liora is dangerous. You should be careful.
Liora emerged fully into the moonlight. Her eyes were icy, calculating, and something in her expression told Aria that the rogue wolf knew far more than she should.
The air between the three of them thickened. Aria realized in that moment that the night was only beginning, that secrets, lies, and betrayals were about to collide in ways she could not yet imagine.
She clenched her fists around the silver pendant. She would protect her brother. She would control the wolf inside her. But she knew, deep down, that the night would demand more from her than she had ever given.
The howl of a distant wolf echoed through the forest, long and mournful, and Aria understood that someone was coming. Someone powerful. Someone who would not stop until they found her.
And she had no choice but to face them.
