Chapter 1: The Delivery That Changed Everything
Chapter 1: The Delivery That Changed Everything Rain poured relentlessly over the city, turning the streets into shimmering rivers of reflected neon lights. Cars sped through puddles, spraying dirty water onto the sidewalks where exhausted pedestrians hurried home. Ethan Carter tightened his grip on the handlebars of his motorcycle as another cold gust of wind slapped against his soaked jacket. His phone vibrated. Order #2847 Customer Waiting: 8 Minutes Late Delivery Penalty: $2,000 Ethan sighed. "Seriously? Even the app is threatening me now." He accelerated despite the rain. Every dollar 💵 mattered 😔. At twenty-two, life had already taught him that dreams were expensive. Ever since his parents died in what the police called a "traffic accident," everything had fallen apart. The insurance money disappeared into hospital bills before his mother finally passed, and the bank reclaimed their small house. Now he rented a cramped one-room apartment with his sixteen-year-old sister, Lily. She was the only family he had left. Every morning, Ethan attended university lectures. Every evening, he worked as a delivery rider until midnight. He barely slept. But every time he thought about giving up, he remembered Lily smiling while saying, "One day, we'll have our own house again." That dream kept him going. His phone rang. "Lily?" "Big brother!" she answered cheerfully. "Are you still working?" "Yeah." "You forgot to eat dinner again, didn't you?" Ethan laughed softly. "I'll eat after this delivery." "You always say that." "I promise." There was a brief silence. "Take care," Lily whispered. "You too. Lock the door and don't open it for strangers." "I know." After hanging up, Ethan smiled. She worried about him far more than she should. He checked the GPS. Only three minutes away. The destination was strange. Instead of a house or restaurant, the app pointed toward the abandoned industrial district on the outskirts of the city. "Who orders food here?" He frowned but continued riding. Soon the bright city lights disappeared behind him. Rusted warehouses stretched endlessly on both sides of the road. Not a single person was in sight. Only the rain. The GPS stopped. Destination Reached. Ethan looked around. Warehouse 17. The giant metal doors were slightly open. "Hello?" No answer. He stepped inside while holding the delivery bag. "Delivery!" Still nothing. The warehouse was dark except for a few flickering lights. His footsteps echoed loudly. Then— BANG! A deafening gunshot shattered the silence. Ethan froze. Another gunshot. Then another. Instinct took over. He ducked behind a stack of wooden crates. Voices echoed across the warehouse. "Kill him!" "Don't let the old man escape!" Footsteps thundered across the concrete floor. Ethan carefully peeked through the gap. His eyes widened. Men in black suits carrying rifles. At least twenty of them. In the middle stood an elderly man dressed in an elegant black coat. Despite bleeding heavily from his shoulder, the old man remained standing. His silver hair was soaked with rain. His expression was calm. Almost terrifyingly calm. Several bodyguards surrounded him. One after another, they fell protecting him. Within moments... Only the old man remained. A tall man with a scar across his face stepped forward. "It's over, Don Romano," he sneered. "You've ruled this city for thirty years." "But tonight..." "Your empire dies." The old man chuckled. "So impatient." "You always were." The scarred man raised his pistol. "Goodbye." BANG! The old man staggered backward. Blood stained his white shirt. Yet... He still refused to kneel. His piercing eyes slowly scanned the warehouse. Then... They landed directly on Ethan. For a split second... Time seemed to stop. The old man's gaze sharpened. He smiled faintly. "You." Ethan's heart nearly stopped. "Me?" Before anyone could react, the old man suddenly reached inside his coat and threw a small black box toward Ethan's hiding place. The box slid across the wet floor. Right to Ethan's feet. The old man shouted with surprising strength. "Take it!" The warehouse erupted into chaos. "He's got the inheritance!" "Kill him!" Every gun turned toward Ethan. "Oh no..." He grabbed the box without thinking Gunfire exploded. Wooden crates splintered around him. Ethan sprinted as bullets tore through the air behind him. "This wasn't part of the delivery job!" He dashed toward a side exit. A bullet grazed his arm. Pain shot through his body. He stumbled outside into the pouring rain. Behind him came angry shouts. "After him!" "He must not escape!" Ethan jumped onto his motorcycle. His trembling hands barely managed to start the engine. The motorcycle roared to life. He sped away. Bullets sparked against the road. One shattered his side mirror. Another pierced the delivery bag. But somehow... He escaped into the maze of city streets. ... Nearly an hour later... Breathing heavily, Ethan parked beneath an abandoned bridge. His entire body shook. "What... just happened?" He looked at the mysterious black box. It was surprisingly light. A strange silver emblem was engraved on the lid. A wolf surrounding a crown. There was no lock. Only a fingerprint scanner. Ethan hesitated. "This is probably evidence." "I should take it to the police..." But something felt wrong. Those men clearly had power. Would the police even believe him? Curiosity won. He placed his thumb on the scanner. Click. The box opened. Inside... There was only one object. A black ring. Simple. Elegant. The moment Ethan touched it— The ring dissolved into black light. "What?!" The light rushed into his right hand. His vision blurred. An unbearable headache exploded inside his skull. He collapsed onto the wet ground. Countless strange voices echoed around him. Authority Confirmed... DNA Verified... Successor Accepted... "What...?" A cold mechanical voice suddenly rang inside his mind. Congratulations. The Mafia Boss System has been successfully activated. Blue light appeared before his eyes. MAFIA BOSS SYSTEM Host: Ethan Carter Level: 1 Authority: Temporary Boss Funds: $0 Territories: None Members: 0 Skills: None Ethan stared blankly. "...Am I hallucinating?" The screen remained floating before him. Then another notification appeared. Main Mission Received Become the official leader of the Romano Syndicate within 72 hours. Reward: Beginner Gift Pack, $100 Million, Combat Mastery, Loyal Elite Guard. Failure: Death. Ethan laughed nervously. "Death?" "Very funny." Another message appeared immediately. Warning The System does not joke. His smile disappeared. Cold sweat trickled down his face. "No..." "This can't be real." Suddenly... Several black SUVs emerged from the darkness. Their headlights illuminated the bridge. Doors opened. Armed men stepped out. Ethan's heartbeat accelerated. One of them spoke into a radio. "We found him." "The successor is here." Dozens of guns slowly pointed toward Ethan. The blue screen flickered once more. Emergency Mission Survive. Reward: Continue Living. Ethan swallowed hard. "...You've got to be kidding me." The leader of the armed men smiled. "So..." "You're the boy the old boss chose." Rain continued to fall. Lightning split the night sky. And for the first time in his ordinary life... Ethan realized that the next decision he made would determine whether he became the ruler of the underworld... Or another forgotten corpse in the rain.
