Chapter 1
The day before Christmas, my sister and I went to the mall near our home to buy some holiday decorations. Shortly after we got out of the car, I caught sight of a tall figure inside the nearby coffee shop.
Was that Jacob? Why was he here?
Earlier that morning, just as we were about to leave for our long-awaited camping trip, Jacob had suddenly claimed that something urgent had come up at work and said he couldn't go. Claire had been a little disappointed, but she immediately told him that business came first and urged him to take care of it.
I thought my eyes were playing tricks on me. I stopped walking, blinked several times, and looked over again. The man sat with his back to the glass window. His black suit and neatly slicked-back hair were exactly the same as Jacob's that day.
Then, the woman sitting beside him caught my attention. Wearing a white dress that highlighted her delicate figure, she cautiously reached out and hooked her arm around his. The man froze for a brief moment, yet he didn't pull away.
Maybe I had only mistaken someone else for Jacob. After all, Jacob and Claire had always been deeply in love. That very morning, right in front of Charlie and me, Jacob had kissed Claire passionately and told her that marrying her was the greatest blessing of his life.
At that time, Charlie and I both nodded in agreement.
After all, my sister had been a prominent figure in Sorthvale's high society since childhood. From the age of five, she had participated in all kinds of competitions—including but not limited to piano, baseball, and equestrian—and won awards left and right.
Most importantly, what seemed three years ago to be a loveless arranged marriage was in fact a union where my brother-in-law, who had long adored and courted my sister, known as the "Iron Lady of the Business World", which ultimately led to the powerful alliance between the Sullivan and Hall families.
He would never do anything to betray Claire. Before I could completely relax, the man turned his head slightly and looked at the woman resting against his shoulder. That small movement revealed his face clearly.
The familiar handsome features, the strong physique hidden beneath his custom-made suit, the broad shoulders and slim waist. That man was really my brother-in-law, Jacob!
My expression changed instantly, and I subconsciously turned toward Claire.
The usually composed and arrogant Claire looked utterly stunned, her face filled with disbelief, as if she had never once considered that something like this could happen between her and Jacob.
"Claire, maybe there's some misunderstanding." My voice softened when I said the last two words.
But no matter what the misunderstanding was, it couldn't erase the fact that Jacob had crossed the line.
Although Claire was a woman with a strong personality, Jacob had treated her with unmatched care. Claire had slowly fallen deeply in love with him.
Someone as calm, rational, and unbreakable as Claire didn't say a single word. That alone showed how much pain she was hiding.
I hesitated before asking, "Should we leave first?"
Claire lowered her gaze, her lashes concealing every emotion she was feeling. When she looked up again, her expression had returned to its usual coldness, though her voice carried a faint rasp. "No. Avoiding it won't change anything. Whether this is a misunderstanding or there's another reason, we'll find out by asking him directly."
I immediately nodded. "Sure."
Then, I held onto Claire's arm tightly and followed her into the café. We had barely stepped within a meter of them when a sweet, delicate voice filled with fake affection reached my ears.
"Jay, I truly didn't want to leave you four years ago. I had no other choice. Your family refused to accept us. They secretly sent people to threaten me. I wanted to tell you everything, but your family had someone keeping an eye on me and stopped me from contacting you. I'm sorry."
My brows furrowed instantly. This woman was Jacob's first love, Valentina Jones, the gold digger who had taken the money from Jacob's mother, Victoria Hall, signed an agreement, and left the country.
But Jacob had no idea about the truth. When Claire decided to enter into a marriage alliance with the Hall family, I had used my hacking skills to investigate Jacob's background ahead of time.
Now, not only had she broken the agreement and returned, but she had also come looking for Jacob and twisted the past, pretending she had been forced to leave. Did she really believe everything she had done back then was perfectly hidden and that Jacob was stupid enough to fall for it?
At that moment, Jacob's gentle voice came through. "It wasn't your fault..."
A surge of anger immediately rose inside me. Seriously? As the future heir of the Hall family and the current CEO of Hall Global Holdings, Jacob actually believed such an obvious lie?
Was he really that clueless? If so, he was becoming even more undeserving of Claire, a woman who possessed both stunning beauty and extraordinary intelligence.
While I looked at him with growing disappointment, Valentina's deliberately sweet voice sounded again.
"Jay, you're so kind. If we hadn't broken up back then, maybe our child would already be in kindergarten by now."
As she spoke, Valentina's fingers slowly traced along Jacob's arm, inching closer to his chest.
I was completely disgusted. I stormed forward, grabbed Valentina by the hair, pulled her aside, and slapped her hard across the face.
Smack!
"You shameless woman, you're asking for trouble!" I roared.
