Chapter 1. Never Meant To Be
Karen dashed out of her room as an ocean of tears dropped from her eyes. Nobody knew what she was up to. The domestic staff couldn't even do anything to stop her. She walked straight to her father's room without even knocking. That's the first time she has ever done something like that. Mister Tornado, her father, was busy with his phone when he saw Karen walk inside in her fits of rage. “Karen, what are you doing here?” Her father raised his head and yelled at Karen. He didn't even allow her to explain herself better before bashing her like a total stranger. His yelling wasn't enough to stop Karen from crying her eyes out. “Dad, why do you hate me so much? What did I ever do to you to deserve such hatred?” She bemoaned. She lost control of herself. It's just a matter of time before she does something to hurt her father. She paced around the room as though she were searching for a lost item. Then, slowly, she returned to her father and poured her heart out. “You actually married me off to a man I don't even know?” She just couldn't handle the betrayer. She never expected such from a man she calls her father. Her father stood there glaring at her without saying a word. He acted like she didn't even exist. He is so sure she can't hurt him. “Damn you, Karen. You already know the importance of this marriage, don't you? Do you wish to see us lose our empire!” Her father blurted out as he defended his actions. Marrying Dominic was the family's only solution to save the company from bankruptcy. He didn't even feel any remorse or empathy towards Karen. If he had the same opportunity, he'd do it again without a second thought. “I don't give a damn about the company!” Karen snapped! “We need to seek another option to make this work, Dad,” She begged her father as though her life depended on it. “I'm sorry, Karen, but I can't change what's been agreed already.” Mister Tornado broke her heart. He tried to pat her on the shoulder, but she edged backwards. The sight of her father irritates her right now. She couldn't even speak further. Her father has succeeded in making her dumbfounded. “Dry your tears. We have a wedding to plan!” Her father whispers to her before exiting the room, dressed in his office attire. Relentlessly, Karen ran outside with the thought of confronting her grandmother. She was poised to prevent the wedding from happening, even if it's the last thing on earth she'd do. Sadly for Karen, her grandmother's room was empty. As she was about to leave the room, her grandmother walked inside. Just like Mister Tornado, Karen's grandmother is already dressed for the wedding. “Karen, why are you here?” Her grandmother blasted her. She berated Karen for not getting dressed for her wedding when the others were fully ready. Karen seems to be the only person who's against the marriage “Grandma, please help me," Karen wept She went on her knees and gripped her grandma's legs. “Don't let daddy sell me off to a total stranger, please," She has practically exhausted all the tears in her eyes. Her make-up is already messed up, but she isn't bothered about that. “Karen,” her grandmother moaned softly as she shook her head in pity. “I wish I could assist, but this issue is beyond me now,” “Why me?” Karen screamed with a loud voice as she finally let go of her grandmother's grip. Numerous questions plagued her head that may not be answered soon. No one is ready to listen to her plea. More like the decision was made without her consent. With pain in her eyes, Karen left her grandma's room. She has a lot to say, but she would rather keep it to herself, knowing that she will be snubbed. She returned to her room and got dressed in her beautiful white wedding gown. She has accepted her fate. Until they drove to the church, Karen didn't utter a word to her father or any member of her family. She considered them her biggest enemies right now. The groom turns out to be a tall, dark, and brooding man. He was standing with his back against the congregation and his hands clasped behind him. His face was impassive, devoid of any excitement towards the big day. As the doors opened in slow motion, everyone spun their necks behind. They can't wait to behold the bride. To their disappointment, it wasn't the bride who walked in. Rather, it turned out to be an old woman. Everyone murmured as they wondered why the bride was taking forever to show up. As the old woman walked down the aisle alone, the groom frowned. He knew something was wrong, but he just couldn't prove it. “Where is my bride?” he asked in a faint tone. But behind that quiet voice dwells an angry man who's capable enough to devour his prey. “She failed to show up,” she spoke in a cracked tone. “Is this a joke?” Dominic scoffs. He's waiting for her to debunk what she just said. “She ran away,” the old woman finally took the courage to speak after much hesitation. “We tried to convince her, but she outsmarted us.” The old woman explained further. Dominic didn't respond. He drifted away from the old woman and signalled to his best man to step forward. He wasn't even paying attention to the old woman's explanation anymore. None of that made sense to him. His best man showed up alongside some hefty-looking men as he asked, “What happened? You don't look great. Today's meant to be your wedding,” “Karen has escaped!” Dominic forced himself to speak. He couldn't have thought of a better way to break the news to his best friend. “Go find Karen and bring her here this minute,” Dominic ordered his best man. They all nodded and stormed out of the church in groups. “Back to you,” he drifted back to the old woman with fire in his eyes. “If Karen isn't found, your family will face the consequences.” He threatened the old woman. The men showed up after as they bundled Karen to the church like a hardened criminal. They caught her hiding behind a tree outside the church building.
