HIDDEN AMONG SHADOWS

2507 Words
Cordelia woke up with a start and frantically searched for her phone to switch off the alarm clock. When she finally turned it off and lied down on bed again, something poked her in the side and after some time she realized that it was a book, which she was reading before falling asleep. I just hope all the pages are intact, she thought due to the fact that she had to return it that day to the library and that she hates to damage books especially the old ones about towns history.  "Cordi! Come on! You have to catch the bus to school and it is leaving in 5 minutes," shouted her mum from downstairs. "Shoot! How can it be that late?" mumbled Cordelia as she swiftly pulled on her new green sweater which matched her emerald green eyes and her wear-out blue jeans. Quickly she ran across the hall to the bathroom and brushed her teeth, washed her face and quickly brushed her long wavy black hair and swept them up into messy bun. Not bothering to put on any make-up she ran downstairs with her bag-pack thrown over one of her shoulders. If she tried she probably could look good and maybe even attractive, but she really didn`t care and she never had enough time or energy. As she sped through the kitchen she grabbed some granola bars for breakfast and possibly also for lunch, that most depends on how many money she had left in her pink little purse. While she ate one of the bars, she was putting on her boots as well as her coat which only resulted in disaster, for she collapsed down on the floor in a big mess. "Oh, sweetheart, be careful. Here let me help you," said her mum while holding up Cordelia`s bag for her to take. She and her mother looked extremely alike, the only difference being their eyes. While Cordelia`s were green, Mrs. Keene`s were grey. Both of them were curvy and not very tall, with big breasts and small waist which highlighted the breasts even more which made Cordi very anxious, when boys were looking at them and seizing her up.  "I won`t make it mum!" shouted Cordelia with tears in her eyes while rearranging everything on her person. "Why don`t you take the car? It would erase all your worries," said mother in her calm voice as she looked out the window at the car parked in front of the house. It was Cordelia`s dad`s car, he died two years ago but it was still very sore memory for her and she couldn`t even think of driving that car without him or his permission.  "You know I can`t. I have to run. Love you, mum," shouted Cordi behind her shoulder as she run down the street to the bus stop, where the bus was already waiting. Her mum waved back and neither of them saw somebody else watching their encounter and whispering: "She is the one. I can feel it. She has witch power inside her."                                                                                    *   *   * Cordelia just barely made it into the bus, but without her red headed friend, who stalled the driver and talked to him while getting on, Cordi would have missed it completely. She and Anna sat down beside Meredith, another one of their group of friends, who was combing and gelling her short blond hair and later putting mascara on her long eyelashes which surrounded her dark brown eyes.    "Thanks, Anna, without you I would be now running after the bus," said Cordelia still trying to catch her breath. "No problem, anytime!" said Anna cheerfully her green eyes sparkling with joy, and she bumped her shoulder against Cordi`s, smiling.  "Why have you been late? Again?" asked Meredith half jokingly and half curiously. She was always trying to find some epic story to write about, always curious and ready for any gossip.  "First of all, it`s not like I am late that often. And second of all, I didn`t hear my alarm clock first two times," said Cordi shyly looking from under her lashes and playing with her green sweater, trying to find some excuses. "Besides you will love what I found out yesterday, or more acutely today, while reading the book." "From the one about history of this town and it`s alleged witches? Are you still reading it? It is just some bullshit about magic and witches and curses, there is nothing truthful there," said Anna skeptically, she was the most scientific of all of them and hated everything other than provable facts. None of the girls ever believed Cordelia`s attempts to show them that there were witches in this town, Anna the loudest one to protest, now Cordi was sure that she found something truthful which nobody could pass as a lie.   "You will see that now I found something meaningful and interesting even for you. I will tell you about it during lunch, when all of us are together." After that statement the silence fell between them until they reached the parking place in front of the school, where Katherine and Lucy were waiting for them, one with brown and one with blond hair, one with short and one with long hair. They were opposites of each other not only in the matter of their hair, but also their eyes were different, Kat has hazelnut brown and Lucy has light blue ones and in their skin color as Kat was with beautiful chocolate color and Lucy was death pale all through the year despite all her attempts for different skin tone.  "Where is Vivienne? Shouldn`t she be with you?" asked Meredith when they made a huddle and she didn`t see Viv.  "She went with Tobias and I suppose they are snogging somewhere right now," said Kat matter of factly, while Lucy ate and nodded along. Viv was the most attractive and experienced one of them, concerning boys and dates. She alone had more boyfriends than all the rest of them together. Her medium long mahogany brown hair which contrasted beautifully with her sapphire blue eyes were very popular among the boys as well as her lean figure and quite long legs. Amazonian beauty as their art teacher said about her, when using her as a model for art classes.  "Should we wait for her or...oh here she is," said Anna as Vivienne came running toward them with a wide grin on her face and red lipstick smeared on her lips, which suggested that she was truly kissing with her boyfriend only moments before.  "I am in love! I think he is The one, girls!" Viv`s smile was contagious and all of them were smiling in just a bit of time despite themselves.  "Vee, you tell it every time," said Cordelia playfully, because that exact thing was one of the reasons why she loves Vee as was Anna`s skepticism and Meredith`s love of gossip, Lucy`s passion for sports and Kat`s delight in art and architecture, and they love Cordelia because of her obsession in history of witchcraft. They went for a group hug as every morning and started for school and their different lessons throughout the day.                                                                                      *   *   *     It is lunch, finally, thought Cordi as she made her way toward the canteen through packed halls of school. She had only the first lesson with Mer and then she did not see any of her girlfriends for the whole day. She has other friends in all her classes, but they do not get her as well as her group, she cannot be her real self and that`s why she feels strangled. In the line Cordi spotted Anna and Lucy, so she made her way toward them to stand beside them in the line, some people were shouting at her for outrunning them. She felt horrible for that, but she needed to talk to her friends so she just ignored everybody else. "I can`t go on like that. It will kill me," Lucy was saying as Cordi approached them. When Cordelia looked at her, she could see that Lucy was sweaty and had her sport clothes on. That`s when everything started to make sense to her, Lucy was talking about her PE teacher, who she was madly in love with even that he was 10 years older than her.  "What happened today? Did he touched you and you got butterflies?" asked Cordi with laughter. "Don`t make fun of me. It`s serious! He winked at me today. That has to mean something."  "Oh, come on, Lucy. All of us know that there is nothing going to happen between you two," said Anna calmly while reading her chemistry book. She was not interested in boys even though they were falling to her knees, she was very busy studying to get to her dream University and to get the scholarship. Lucy got kind of pissed off so she stayed silent while they were getting the food, neither Cordelia nor Anna was bothered by that, because they were reading their books. Anna was probably learning or just revising something and Cordi was again reading the History book and was thinking of the way how to say to her friends the news that she found out. When they got the food on their trays, they looked around trying to find the rest of their group as well as some place where they could sit to eat their lunch. Suddenly Meredith was before them was gesturing for them to follow her outside, so they did. As they went Meredith was at the front of the small procession greeting everybody they passed, after her was Anna not looking anywhere else, but on her book, following her was Lucy absently looking at the teacher`s table where Mr. Schulz was eating and talking to other teachers, at the rear was Cordelia trying not to spill any food and not to crush into anybody or anything around her. When from nowhere there was some boy before her and she couldn`t prevent the crush. She somehow managed not to spill any of the food on herself nor on the boy, but it magically (for there is no other word for what happened than that) stayed on the tray without spilling. But unfortunately her book got sprawled not the floor. Cordelia looked around herself trying to find some place where she could put her tray with the food so she could pick up her fallen book, but there was no place. "Here let me help you," said the boy, who she bumped into, while handing her the book. "Wow, History of Witchcraft in Biel. That sounds cool. I also like the witchcraft, because some of my ancestor was a wizard." "Really? Mine also! That's awesome! By the way I am Cordelia," she said full of enthusiasm for this was the first time that she found somebody who loved witchcraft. "I am Kayden, but you can call me Kay," he said with an evil grin, which made him even more sexy yet Cordelia thought that it was impossible with his hair the color of crow`s feathers and pitch-black eyes. When Cordi opened her mouth to talk to him some more, Meredith came to them and interrupted her. "Hey! Where have you been Cordi? I thought that you were right behind Lucy. Come, you wanted to tell us something and now everybody is waiting for you, even Viv," said Mer while dragging Cordi behind her. "What are you doing? I was talking with him!" hissed Cordi under her breath so Kay wouldn`t hear her.  "He is no good" "How do you know that?" asked Cordi starting to be irritated. "Oh, Cordelia you forgot your book," said Kayden from behind and when the girls turned around he was right behind them, offering the book. "Thanks Kayden. See you later?" said Cordi while taking the book from him. "You bet," he said with the wink as he walked away from them. The girls did not talk while making their way through the grass toward the others, Cordelia was too distracted thinking about Kayden and Meredith was too upset that Cordi seemed to like that guy, a lot.  "What happened?" "Who was that guy that you talked to?" "He looked cute! Do you have his number?" "He had the right proportions. Do you think he is a model?" These questions were asked as soon as Cordi and Mer sat down on the blanket beside their dear friends.  "Anna, I had just crushed into that boy and my book had fallen down, so he picked it up and we talked a bit about it. Lucy, his name is Kayden and that`s all I know about him. Vivienne, you have your own boyfriend. And Kat I have no idea, I do not know him," said Cordelia trying to answer all of their questions. "Not for me, silly. For you. He obviously likes you," said Viv with confidence for she knows the matters of the heart - at least she knows it the best from all of them.  "Enough about that stupid boy," said Meredith irritated for absolutely no reason. "Why don`t you like him?" asked all of them at the same time. "He seems strange as though he is hiding something," said Mer as the answer to their question. "Cordi, dear, you wanted to tell us something about the book, didn`t you?" "Oh, yeah, sure," stammered Cordelia, because Meredith had never before called her 'dear' in front of all their friends. "So...I found some evidence that one of my ancestors was a true witch." "That? Again? I can`t hear it," said Anna starting to stand. "Wait! It is true! It is written somewhere here, let me find it," said Cordi trying to find the right page where it is written, but Anna did not wait.  "Look, Cordi, I would love to talk to you more, but I promised Tobias to meet him. So I have to go. See you later," said Viv as her excuse and walked away from them toward the football field where her boyfriend was. "Mr. Schulz! Mr. Schulz! Can I speak with you?" shouted Lucy at the teacher as she ran toward him and away from her friends. When Cordelia finally find the right page and looked around her, she realized that only Meredith and Kat were still sitting beside her, but not paying attention. The fact that all of them ran away did not shook her a bit, because this happened all the time, when she started talking about the witches. She had enough of it, so she stood up to go to her next lesson when she found some note that had slipped from the History book. As she picked it up she saw that some numbers were written on it. She turned around toward the canteen, where she first met Kay and she saw him standing in the shadow of the trees as he saluted her and in the next moment vanished into thin air.
