Chapter 3: Not In My Job Description

1312 Words
After a surprised paused, everyone started for the door. “Except you.” He said looking dead at me. “Mr. Clark, this is Katherine Wells. Your new personal assistant.” She said, confused by his odd reaction. “Thank you. You can go Miss. Jones.” He didn’t take his eyes off me. As soon as the door clicked closed behind me, Seth’s features softened. “Well this is unexpected” he said crossing the room toward me. I took a step back, had he lied to me? Seth froze at my reaction. “You are Alexander Clark? Then who is Seth?” I snapped. Feeling stupid. Seth held up his hands. “Seth is my middle name, only friends and family call me Seth. And you.” He tentatively took a step closer. “My father’s name was also Alexander. So growing up everyone called me Seth.” Seth took another cautious step towards me. “f**k!” I said, in a very unprofessional way. “I moved three hours from home for this job.” I spun around in the verge of a panic attack. I had slept with my boss. Seth’s hand touched my shoulder. “Kate, we can figure this out.” He said gently, wrapping me into his arms. “I knew this weekend was too good to be true.” I felt defeated. “Look, at work I’m Mr. Clark and you are Miss. Wells. When we leave we are just Seth and Kate.” He was actually pleading with me. “You think that is going to work? We can separate the two? Like I’m not going to be thinking of your mouth on me during meetings?” I said, the words coming out fast. “I didn’t say that. However, I think we are both adults and can conduct ourselves professionally.” He replied, straightening himself. Seth picked up his phone and sent a message. A moment later his door opened and it was Missy. “Thank you for taking the time to clarify that Miss. Wells. I believe we will work well together.” Seth played it off like we were just having a conversation. “Of course.” I said, glancing at Missy. “Miss. Jones, can you please ensure she has everything she needs. We will meet after lunch to go over things in more detail.” Seth replied without another word. Essentially we were dismissed. My office and Missy’s office were right next to Seth’s. Actually hers was more of a reception area where mine was more private. Once we were in my office Missy seemed to relax. “Whatever happened in that meeting before we arrived, at least his good mood isn’t totally gone.” Missy said laughing. “This is him in a good mood.” We both laughed at that. We sat down in the small seating area. “Have you worked for Mr. Clark long?” Now I was even more curious about Seth. “About 2 years now. He can be a challenge, but he isn’t that bad.” “So, sorry this seems a little redundant to have a secretary and a personal assistant. My last position it was just me.” I said, curious what exactly I was supposed to do. “Glad you asked.” Missy hands me a tablet. She was a tall attractive brunette with impressive fashion sense. “If you click here, there is a breakdown. Even flow chart.” Thankfully I was familiar with the AI productivity program they used. Seth’s life was surprisingly compartmentalized. I started sorting through all the tasks and lists and comparing them with his schedule. It was obvious that no one had bothered to update tasks since his PA . I was so busy trying to get up to speed, I lost track of time. My computer alerted, it was Seth. “Come to my office” No please or thank you, I would need to work on his manners. Without thinking I walked right into Seth’s office. Missy gave me an odd look, which I ignored. “Mr. Clark.” I said when I opened the door. Seth looked up studying me with my tablet in hand. I closed the door behind me without being asked. I figured we would need some privacy. “Please have a seat.” He said gesturing to the chair in front of his desk. “How are you?” “Ready to review your schedule for the week sir.” I was determined to keep this professional. “Very well.” For the next 45 min we got caught up on everything, finally getting his schedule back on track. There was just one more thing as I was about to leave, I paused as I opened the door. “One more thing, you are scheduled for drinks with Kate. Should I cancel?” I asked, keeping my tone professional but not breaking eye contact. “No, I’ll keep that date.” He said, a smirk playing at the corners of his mouth.“ closed the door and started back to my office. “Who is Kate?” Missy whispers as I head back to my office. “I thought I wasn’t to discuss Mr Clark’s personal life.” I asked confused. Missy had the nerve to look embarrassed. “Oh sorry, I thought it was a business meeting. Maybe you forgot to tag me on the schedule.” She laughed. The hell she did. I was heading down to the break room since I had worked through my lunch. I had been informed that there was a catering company who provided light fresh snacks daily. “Ever notice Mr. Clark has super hot PAs?” A man said as I headed down the hall. I looked up to see two men waiting for the elevator with their backs toward me. “When you are super rich you can pay women to wait on you too.” The other guy said and they laughed. I waited in silence. They didn’t bother to see or care if anyone was around. “Yeah but apparently this one has a brain, someone said she was personally recommended by Miranda Carmichael.” Just then the elevator door opened and the two men stepped in. Surprised when they turned around and saw me, I casually walked in and turned my back to them. I hoped they had a nice view of my ass in my gray pencil skirt. “Are you new here?” One of the men asks, they knew exactly who I was. I’m not dumb. “Yes.” I replied, not offering any small talk. “I’m Ben Forester, this is Chris Grant.” The guy on the left said. They looked to be in their mid thirties. Glancing back I clocked they both had wedding bands on their left hands. “Nice to meet you. I’m the hot PA with the brain.” I said just as the doors opened. I turned and walked out without another look back. A woman in a skirt is always underestimated. I use to work for Miranda after all, she is a big fish in a man’s game. I learned a thing or two. It was ten after five and everyone was heading out for the day. I wished Missy a good night and she nodded, I’m guessing my antics earlier at the elevator got around the office. I opened Seth’s door, “You need anything before I head out?” I asked. Missy watching me as she got her bag out of the closet in the corner. “Did you confirm with Kate?” He asked. “Yes sir, she will be there. You have a good evening.” I said and turned to walk out. Missy glaring at me
