"Happy birthday," everyone shouted.
It was her son's birthday and everyone was happy. Her mom, sister, and husband had planned the surprise party and it turned out to be the party of the year.
She had never seen her son that happy and that smile on his face was enough joy for her. She could give anything for him to smile again but it was too late. All she has now are memories of the moments they spent together.
Tears could be seen in her eyes as she remembered that day, five years ago when her family was still intact but now her mom was angry or maybe hates her. And her sister, what she felt for her couldn't be explained. She was tagged as the black sheep of the family and her son no longer stays with her.
Three months after the birthday celebration, she got divorced from her husband, something nobody took lightly. To everyone, they were this dream couple that was admired but behind the four corners of the bedroom was so much that her mouth could utter.
Amelia thought that time heals all wounds and that was why she went to further her studies. Five years later and nothing had changed. It seemed to her that maybe time was the wound.
She wiped her tears, placed back the photo they had taken together under her pillow, wiped her tears, and got down from the bed to prepare for work.
She worked with the criminal investigation unit and with the work on her desk, she had to go to work early.
With her head facing up and a smile on her face, she drove to work. Her colleagues knew her as a jovial individual and she had to put up the act.
"Good morning," Juliet her close colleague greeted her with a smile immediately she arrived.
She never had a best friend but Juliet could fit the description of a friend. The rest, she was just friendly to them and nothing more.
"What good happened when I was away?" Amelia asked as they walked towards her office.
"The judge finally has issued the arrest warrant for the man," Juliet announced.
"That is just wonderful, when are we going to arrest him?" Seems like her day would be wonderful. She just got some good news even before she started working.
"I don't think you are a part of the team that is going to arrest him. They have already picked those who are going," Amelia frowned.
It was her case, she did all the investigation and the boss can't allow her to finish what she started? Who does that?
Her boss wanted an affair with her and when she refused, hated her. When he handed the case to her, everyone knew she won't manage it.
They were talking about an investigation she did then bringing the culprit to book, they send another person to do the work? She won't allow it.
"Is the boss in?" She asked Juliet.
"Yes, and he is part of the team that is going to arrest the man," Juliet replied.
"I'll be back," she walked out of the office before Juliet could tell her anything.
"Come in," the voice said from inside after she knocked.
"Are you guys ready?" He asked not looking up from the files he was going through.
"Why I'm not informed?" Amelia asked.
"Amelia, what a surprise? You came in late that was why I already picked a team to go with to the warehouse," he replied.
"Sir, I was only fifteen minutes late, I investigated the man, I found the warehouse, why I'm I not part of the team?" She asked.
"You did a good job but I'll take it from here," he answered casually like it is nothing.
"What? When you assigned me the duty, I was supposed to do it to the end, why take over?" She arched her brows.
"I assigned the duty to you, I took over from you, I'm your boss, or do you have something personal with this man? Don't you find it surprising how you managed to get all the information in such a short time something others can't do?" He arched his brows back and she was dumbfounded.
"Or maybe you used your body?"
"Just because you couldn't do it you think nobody else can?" Amelia asked back, there was no way she could allow him to intimidate her not after the sacrifices and sleepless nights.
She went the extra mile to set up the man using his wife and she needed to protect that woman and now Zadok wants to get the credit? Who does that?
"You want to finish the work? You also have to protect his wife and daughter, it's also part of the job," she walked out on him and went back to her office.
"What happened?" Juliet asked seeing her change of mood.
"If I knew, I won't do this job," she hissed.
"We swore to do the job without asking questions," Juliet reminded her.
"But Zadok is getting on my nerves, why must he always get credit on other people's work? Sometimes I ask myself how he got there,"
"You need to get that woman out of that house before the police get there. You promised her that don't let her pay for the nonsense going on here," Juliet advised.
"Is Vincent here?"
"Yes, I saw his car outside when I arrived," Juliet answered.
"I'll talk to him, he can accompany me,"
"Call her, tell her to leave the house with her daughter and meet you up, it's dangerous for them and you if you are seen," Juliet suggested.
"Thank you so much, I think I understand why they say two heads are better than one," she chuckled and left the office as Zadok entered.
"Where is she going? Call her because I need some information before we leave," he instructed.
"She is just picking something up then comes back,"
"When she returns, tell her to see me in my office immediately,"
"Ok sir," she nodded in approval.
After talking to Vincent, she went back to the office to pick her things before they leave.
"The boss wants to see you immediately," Juliet informed her.
"Tell him I went to save the woman, he is the last person I want to see right now," Amelia picked her handbag and left.
"You don't seem to be in the mood today," Vincent commented as he started the car.
"I'm getting tired with this office, I'm thinking of getting a transfer," she responded.
"What? You are one of the best and your transfer won't be taken lightly,"
"I've made up my mind," she said sternly.
