Lex walked to the bar and poured the wine into two glasses and took one to his dad. He may be old but won't accept to be called old that's why at seventy-five he is still in business and his mind operates like he is in his thirties.
"What is this I'm hearing?" Kenneth asked taking the glass from him.
"The shipment was frozen by the police,"
"Under your watch?" He yelled.
"Dad, everything was under control, I'm investigating what happened," he answered trying to sound as convincing as possible.
"Do you know, they found the warehouse where you hid that man? I told you to get rid of him once he is done executing the job but you won't listen,"
"You also said we should put friends close and enemies closer, we will still need him. Can you imagine he was able to assassinate the DCI in his home without nobody finding out? He is smart and we need people like them in our business," Lex sipped from his drink.
"Smart and yet it was a woman that unveiled him?" Kenneth questioned.
He couldn't understand why his son wanted to do things his way and end up messing up. He had trained him well but each time he failed. What hurt him most was that a woman outsmarted him.
In their world, women are weaklings and not the other way round. His dad's phone rang interrupting their talk.
Kenneth listened to the person at the other end and his expression changed. He started trembling and threw the phone across the room, the only thing he does when extremely furious.
"What happened?" Lex asked.
"All this nonsense, is because of you, just pray everything goes on well," he warned and walked out on him.
Zadock cursed as he paced up and down in his office. He took the landline in the office and made a call.
"Is Amelia in her office?" He asked over the phone.
"Ok, tell her to come to my office when she arrives," he instructed then hanged up.
Juliet took her phone and dialed Amelia's number. She went to Vincent's office immediately she saw his car outside. She wanted to brief Amelia before she goes to meet with the boss but unfortunately, she wasn't there.
"Vincent is already here, where are you?" Juliet asked.
"I drove the lady and her daughter to my house, that's the only safe place I can think of right now, and don't tell anyone," she replied.
"You know, I can't tell anyone. I have the latest gist for you," Juliet said over the phone.
"I'll be at the office in ten minutes, then you can tell me," Amelia suggested.
"Make it quick, you'll meet me in Vincent's office. Come there before meeting the boss, seems like things didn't go as planned,"
"Ok, I'm already here," she said and hung up.
Amelia parked her car and headed to Vincent's office.
"The boss asked for your presence," Josek informed her immediately she saw her.
"Thank you for letting me know," she appreciated and continued with her journey.
"What was with the urgency?" Amelia asked them as she stepped inside Vincent's office.
"It all went badly," Juliet started.
"What went badly?"
"They went to the warehouse but I think they knew beforehand that the police would be going so even though he was still there, he was heavily guarded. There was a fight and we lost two of our colleagues and three are hospitalized. Most of his men were killed and unfortunately, he escaped with a gunshot. They tried running after the car he left with but all to no avail," Vincent reported to her.
"Damn it!"Amelia cursed.
"What hurts me are the lives lost, we had everything under control but he insisted we leave everything to him then boom, he found out we knew where he was," Juliet complained.
"Back to square one, we all know it is risky to have him out there right now that he can revenge," Vincent chipped in.
"Do you think what I'm thinking that we have a snitch among us?" Amelia asked.
"I have been having the same thoughts as well," Vincent answered.
"Then that explains how immediately Zadok has the whole report then the man knows, how come?
"I'll see what he got to say then we can start from there," Amelia suggested.
"How dare you?" Zadok yelled immediately she entered the office.
She pulled a seat and sat down not uttering a word, staring at him.
"Are you dumb?" He yelled again.
"You expect me to answer an irrational question?"
"I came here to set some things straight, I came here to work and were working fine but ever since your promotion, you've been getting on my nerves. I'm your assistant but you do things your way then you insult me. What did I do this time around?" She asked calmly.
"Do you know I can make you get fired,"
"You shouldn't stress yourself, I'll quit by myself. What do you want from me? Sometimes I think you are the snitch in this office,"
"Excuse me,"
"You want to turn tables yet you are the snitch among us, can you explain how you found all that information within a short period?" He added.
"And can you explain why you wanted to go your way and get the credit?" She asked back.
"Or let's say you wanted a promotion and you want to get credit for other people's work? I Am fed go and I can look for a job somewhere else. I'll even apply for a transfer,"
"You know I can recommend you for a promotion once I'm appointed as the DCI but the ball is in your pocket,"
"I'll get it by gracing your bed? Who put you here in the first place? What makes you think they'll appoint a DCI from our unit?"
"Your stubbornness will cost you dearly, " he warned.
"I better sleep with a mad man than you," she hissed and walked out of the office.
Zadok banged the table frustrated. He needed some fresh air, he picked his car keys and walked out of the office, he wasn't on duty that evening and office hours were almost over.
He arrived at his house and was met with another shocking news. He dropped on the couch calmly and for the first time in years, he cried.
