Chapter 48
Consciousness came swirling back. Something wasn’t quite right. As feeling returned to my body, I felt that I was lying on a hard, lumpy surface.
For some reason, it was hard to breathe. My brain struggled to remember what had happened and where I was. Opening my eyes to darkness didn’t help. Where was I?
I was lying on my left side in an awkward position and couldn’t remember how I’d gotten there. There was dirt beneath me. That explained why I was so uncomfortable.
Think! I told myself, Focus... Where am I? What’s wrong with the air?
My mind remained foggy but the dirt floor sparked something. The tunnels. The cavern. The device. Malvolio had appeared and — No!
It all came flooding back to me. I gasped as I tried to suck more air into my burning lungs.
