Say a goodbye to your family
*****
“Mom… I don’t think this is a good idea.”
Melissa’s voice cracked as fresh tears slipped down her cheeks. She stood frozen in front of the mirror, staring at her reflection in the tight white wedding gown that felt more like a shroud.
Her mother yanked the zipper up with a sharp tug, refusing to meet her eyes. “Hold still.”
“Mom, please—”
“What’s the good idea then?” Mia snapped from the velvet couch, not even looking up from her phone. Her long legs were crossed, designer heels dangling. “You always have a problem with everything.”
Melissa swallowed hard. “Mr. Artemis asked for you, Mia. Not me. He want the beautiful Mia. The one he saw in the magazines. No one knows I’m a Ruvan.”
Mia finally glanced up, with her lips curled.
So? He is older than me…. I’ve watched a lot of movies Loan sharks her ugly…. “You’re twenty-nine, fat and ugly- Melissa. Almost thirty and still no boyfriend, no life, nothing.
You should be grateful we’re even letting you save this family.”
Their mother sighed heavily, adjusting the veil with impatient fingers. “Your sister is right. Do you want us all dead? Artemis Tiger Blackwood doesn’t play games.
Your father already signed the agreement. If we don’t deliver a bride today, we’re finished.”
“But I have ideas,” Melissa said desperately, turning to face them. “Real ones. I designed most of the jewelry collections that built our company.
I can fix this. Just give me time to present them to him. He will see my potential and he will wait for our company to bounce back so we can pay him. We don’t have to give any one to him. ”
“Time?” Her mother laughed bitterly. “The guests are already seated. The man is waiting at the altar. And you want to negotiate? After everything we’ve sacrificed for you?”
Melissa’s chest tightened. “Sacrificed? I’ve worked day and night for this family. I gave up everything—”
“You gave up nothing,” Mia cut in, standing up gracefully. “You stayed in the shadows because you’re comfortable there.
Fat. Invisible. Safe.
Now the one time we need you to actually be useful, you’re crying like a child.”
Tears streamed freely now. Melissa looked at her mother, searching for any softness.
“Mom… I just want to live a happy life. I don’t want to marry a dangerous man I don’t even know.”
Her mother’s face hardened. “Happy? While your father is drowning in debt to the mafia?
While Mia’s future is ruined? A model like her?
Grow up, Melissa. This is your duty.” You are the Eldest child…. I also sacrifice for my sisters….
The door burst open. Two stern-faced men in black suits stepped in.
“It’s time,” one growled.
Melissa’s legs nearly gave out. Her mother grabbed her arm in a bruising grip and pushed her forward.
“Don’t embarrass us,” she whispered coldly.
By The way the ceremony passed in a blur of forced smiles and whispered threats. Melissa barely remembered walking down the aisle. She kept her head down, heart hammering as the vows were rushed through.
Artemis Tiger Blackwood barely looked at her during the pronouncement. He was tall, devastatingly handsome, and terrifying, she stared secretly—his presence alone sucked the air out of the room.
When it was over, he gripped her hand like a vice and led her into a private lounge behind the venue.
Then everything shattered.
Artemis’s phone rang. He listened for less than thirty seconds before his expression turned murderous. He ended the call and looked at Melissa with new, chilling clarity.
“You’re not Mia.” Mia is not fat.
Before she could speak, he snapped his fingers. Four men appeared instantly.
“Bring her entire family. Now. All of them.”
Twenty minutes later, Melissa’s parents and Mia were shoved into the room, disheveled and terrified.
Mia’s eyes widened the second they landed on Artemis. Her entire demeanor changed—shoulders back, lips parted, a flush creeping up her neck. She was instantly, shamelessly smitten. He was handsome, young, fresh and breathtaking.
Artemis stood in front of Melissa, studying her face. For a brief second, something almost like confusion flickered in his eyes. Then it vanished.
“Why?” he asked, voice dangerously calm. “Why the hell did you do this to me?”
Melissa opened her mouth, but Mia stepped forward quickly, tears already pooling in her perfectly lined eyes.
“She locked me up, Mr. Blackwood,” Mia said, voice trembling beautifully. “She threatened our parents. She said if I married you first, she would never get another chance because she’s turning thirty soon.
She was scared of becoming an old lady. She forced us to swap. I swear on my life.”
Melissa’s head snapped toward her sister.
“Mia… what are you—”
“She even threatened to ruin the company completely if we didn’t go along with it,” Mia continued, stepping closer to Artemis, her voice soft and pleading.
“We were all so scared of her. She’s always been jealous of me. Please… you have to understand.”
Their mother nodded frantically. “It’s true, Mr. Blackwood. Melissa has always been… difficult. She hate stepping her legs outside because she feels inferior she is always obsessed with taking everything from her sister because she feels she is the eldest.”
Their father stayed silent, eyes on the floor.
Artemis’s gaze never left Melissa. For a moment, he looked almost mesmerized by the girl he had originally chosen—Mia—now standing so close, looking up at him with open admiration.
Then his expression iced over as he turned back to the woman he had just married.
“You played me,” he said quietly. “On my wedding day.”
“I didn’t want this,” Melissa whispered, voice breaking. “They forced me. I tried to tell them—”
“Shut up.” His voice was low and lethal. “You think I’m stupid? You think you can humiliate me in front of everyone and live?, They we’re literally disgusted on how fat you were… I could have start up the drama from the aisle if not for my reputation.”
He pulled out a sleek black gun from his jacket. Then the room went deathly silent.
Melissa’s mother gasped. Mia stepped back, but her eyes still glittered with something close to excitement.
Artemis pressed the cold barrel directly against Melissa’s forehead. His hand was steady. His eyes were empty.
“You made a fatal mistake today,” he said softly. “And your family helped you.”
Melissa’s entire body shook. Tears poured down her face as she stared into the eyes of the man who now owned her—and wanted her dead.
“Please…” she breathed.
His finger tightened on the trigger.
Say goodbye to your family….. he yelled under his breath….
