CHAPTER 3

CALEB'S POV This wasn't how this was supposed to go. This wasn't what I was told. My wolf, Claw, writhe inside me. He was just as restless as I was. Alpha Xavier gave us straightforward orders. Go to the Cole Residence, retrieve the family and get out. Easy. Or so I thought. I got there and those damn shadow walkers were having a blood bath. If I hadn't gotten there when I had, Evelyn would have probably been dead. How the hell did they know where to find them? I mind linked the Alpha previously to let him know what the situation was. I had no doubt that they were already on our trail, we needed to move quickly. I gripped my hands on the steering wheel, a little tighter than necessary. Shit. This situation was turning into a bloody mess. One I'd have to clean up myself. The highway was empty, my headlights the only source of light. The night breeze swept past me slightly through the open window, carrying Evelyn's scent with it. I unconsciously took a whiff of it, shuddering at it. It was sweet, like lavender and light rain. It made my head dizzy. I shook my head to clear my damn head. This was Claw’s fault. He whined at my accusation but didn't deny it. He was oddly excited about her. This odd being. I didn't even know what she was. She smelled human but her father was supposed to be the next alpha. I secretly wondered if she knew that but it wasn't my place. This wasn’t my concern. My only job now was to deliver Evelyn to Alpha Xavier. No distractions. “Will I even be able to see my parents grave? Will they even be buried?” Evelyn's small voice filled the silent space. No. That was the truth. Her trip to Alpha Xavier's house was more out of duty than fleeting feelings. But I didn't tell her that. I didn't give her a reply. I just kept my eyes glued to the lonely road. My ears perked up. Claw was picking up an unfamiliar scent. I glanced at the rearview mirror. Nothing. The silence was deafening but Claw was not at ease. “What is the problem?” I asked, still vigilantly scanning our surroundings. “Rogues… two of them” Well I'll be damned. I didn't make it obvious. I was willing to bet a million bucks that Evelyn wasn't even aware of what she really was. “You should buckle up” I ordered and she gave me a questioning look. I couldn't give her a reply. One of the wolves landed on the bonnet. The car jerked forward due to the weight and I swerved trying to keep control of the steering. I glanced at Evelyn, who's eyes were almost bulging out of their sockets, glued to the beast in front of her, mouth hanging low, her skin as white as snow. I mean, who could blame her? And then… A shrill sound cut through the air, her screams. The unpleasant sound made Claw whine, me too. I was about to tell her to calm down when she started fumbling her seatbelt. I glaned at her in shock. “What the hell are you doing? Keep those on if you want to live” She ignored me and finally I heard a click. She unbuckled the belt and crawled to the back seat in a hurry. I would have asked why, but she was probably scared out of her mind. I on the other hand had to keep us from crashing. Although it was a bit hard with a werewolf blocking my vision. He wasn't attacking, just snarling at us. I didn't wait to know what plans it had. I stepped on the brakes and the beast tumbled over. I kicked my door open, glancing back at Evelyn who looked like she was searching for something. I went straight for the rogue, I didn't need to shift for this. I could handle one rogue. He snarled, snapping his jaws, but I was faster. In one swift motion, I caught him in a headlock. His fur bristled, his body thrashing wildly against mine. His teeth gnashed at my arm, but before he could land a bite… I twisted. CRACK. His body went limp. Just then my mind went back to my wolf's observation. Claw… I thought you said- The wind was knocked out of me and I tumbled to the ground with a force. The second rogue was in human form. Was he dumb or just brave? I couldn't tell. Either way, I didn't have the time to deal with this. Before I could react, the damn rogue staggered forward with a grunt. I blinked. What the-? Evelyn stood behind him, gripping a freaking umbrella. I watched, stunned, as she let out what seemed to be a battle cry and swung again… WHACK. The rogue collapsed with a grunt, and she kept going. I should have stopped her. But damn, I was too amused. I stood there dumbfounded as she beat him senseless. I almost felt bad for him. Almost. It looked like she was taking all her frustration out on him. I had to walk over there and pry her off the poor man. “Okay Black widow, I think he's had enough” she grunted in opposition. “Let me go” she screamed and I steadied her on her feet before landing the final blow and his body went limp. I turned back to Evelyn with a raised brow. I was amused at her actions, any regular person would have pissed themselves but she picked up my umbrella and wacked the living day lights out of him. She was still breathing heavily from the assault. Her chest rising and falling, her face red with anger, or probably adrenaline. Her damp fiery waves sticking to her face. I walked up to her and had to get her attention as her eyes were still glued to the lifeless man. “He's dead Evelyn” I said quietly and she brought her eyes to me. Something unrecognizable flashed through them. “Not dead enough” she huffed before getting into the car, her voice was strained, like she was holding back her emotions but there was a coldness that made me shudder. I couldn't deny it. I liked it. Every second that went by with Evelyn Cole made me more curious about what was underneath all the layers.
