Back To School.

****************************************** Debbie stepped out of the car and onto the bustling school grounds. The Monday morning chaos was in full swing, with students rushing to their classrooms and locker rooms. She took a deep breath, feeling a mix of nerves and determination. As she walked through the crowds, Debbie noticed that everything seemed normal. There was no sign of mourning or grief, no acknowledgement of the tragedy that had befallen the Edwin family. It was as if the school was trying to pretend that nothing had happened. Aisha, a friend of Debbie's and the twins, caught up to her in the hallway. "Hey, Debbie! How are you doing?" she asked, concern etched on her face. "I'm doing okay, I guess. Just trying to get back to normal," Debbie replied, forcing a smile. Aisha nodded sympathetically. "I can imagine. How are the twins doing?" Debbie hesitated, unsure how much to reveal. "They're... coping, I think. It's been tough on them." Just then, the principal's voice came over the intercom, requesting Debbie's presence in her office. Debbie's heart sank, knowing that Mrs. Bright had never been a fan of hers. As she entered the principal's office, Mrs. Bright looked up from her desk, a false smile plastered on her face. "Ah, Miss Edwins, what a pleasant surprise to see you here." Debbie raised an eyebrow. "What do you mean? I go to school here." Mrs. Bright's smile faltered for a moment before she regained her composure. "I am aware of that, Miss Edwins. I'm just surprised that your father still allowed you to attend school without additional security." Debbie's eyes flickered, but she remained calm. "He has nothing to fear." Mrs. Bright's expression turned curious. "And how are the twins doing? I've been meaning to reach out to them." Debbie shrugged, feigning nonchalance. "They're okay, I guess. Just trying to cope." Mrs. Bright leaned forward, her eyes narrowing. "I see. Well, please do extend my condolences to them. This must be a very difficult time." Debbie nodded, her expression neutral. "I will." Mrs. Bright paused, studying Debbie's face. "You know, Deborah, I've always found it interesting how closely you're tied to the Edwin family. Almost as if you're a part of their inner circle." Debbie's eyes flickered, but she maintained her calm demeanor. "I'm their cousin, Mrs. Bright. And a friend. We're close." Mrs. Bright's eyebrows rose, her expression surprised. "Ah, I didn't realize that. Well, in any case, please do give them my condolences." Debbie stood up, her eyes locked on the principal's. "Can I leave now? I still have classes to attend." Mrs. Bright nodded curtly, her anger barely contained. Debbie walked out of the office, feeling a sense of satisfaction at having stood up to the principal. As she walked down the hallway, Aisha caught up to her again. "Debbie, come quick!" she whispered urgently. Debbie followed Aisha to the cafeteria, where a standoff was unfolding. David, a classmate, was shouting at Charles, who was standing his ground, fists clenched. "You're just defending them because you're friends with them!" David spat. "But everyone knows the twins are murderers!" Charles's face turned red with anger, and he launched himself at David. The two boys clashed, punches flying, before their friends intervened to separate them. Debbie's eyes widened in shock. "He called the twins... murderers?" she repeated, her voice trembling with outrage. Aisha nodded grimly. "Yeah, it's been going around school. People are saying all sorts of crazy things." Debbie's face set in determination. She knew she had to do something to clear the twins' names and put an end to the rumors. As the fight between Charles and David escalated, Debbie's eyes widened in alarm. Suddenly, David's gaze locked onto hers, and a sneer spread across his face. "Hey, Debbie! You're friends with the twins, right? You must be just as guilty as they are!" David shouted, taking a step towards her. Charles, still fuming, turned to face David. "Shut up, David! You don't know what you're talking about!" But David was undeterred. "Oh, I know exactly what I'm talking about! The twins are murderers, and Debbie's just an accessory to their crime!" The cafeteria erupted into chaos as students began to take sides. Debbie's eyes darted towards Aisha, who was trying to pull her away from the escalating fight. But Debbie stood her ground, her eyes locked on David. "You don't know what you're talking about, David. And even if you did, it's not like you're some kind of saint." David's face turned red with rage, and he lunged at Debbie. But Charles was quicker, grabbing David's arm and spinning him back around. "Leave her alone, David!" Charles shouted, his eyes blazing with anger. The fight continued to escalate until the teachers finally intervened, pulling the students apart and restoring order to the cafeteria. As the dust settled, Debbie's eyes met Charles', and she felt a surge of gratitude towards him. He had stood up for her, even when it meant putting himself in harm's way. But as she turned to leave the cafeteria, Debbie couldn't shake off the feeling that this was only the beginning. The rumors and accusations would continue to spread, and it was only a matter of time before things escalated further.
