The Crime Scene
*****************************************
The Lagos sun beat down on the Edwins' mansion, casting a golden glow over the chaotic scene unfolding before it. The sound of sirens filled the air - ambulance, police, and fire department vehicles all converged on the scene, their lights flashing in tandem.
Reporters from various news stations stood behind the yellow "Do Not Cross" tape, eagerly reporting on the events as they unfolded.
"I'm reporting live from the Edwins' residence, where a gruesome double murder has taken place," one reporter said, her voice somber. "The police have cordoned off the area, and forensic experts are collecting evidence."
Another reporter chimed in, "Eyewitnesses claim that the police arrived at the scene around 8 am this morning. The victims' identities have been confirmed as Mr. and Mrs. Edwin, the patriarch and matriarch of the Edwin family."
As the reporters continued to broadcast their findings, officers surrounded the building, securing the perimeter and keeping curious onlookers at bay. Neighbors and passersby gathered behind the tape, their faces filled with a mix of shock, horror, and morbid curiosity.
The entire neighborhood was in a state of dilemma, unsure of what to make of the events unfolding before their eyes.
Inside the mansion, Mr. Matthew Edwin, the younger brother of the deceased patriarch, stood at the foot of the stairs, his eyes fixed on the floor as if unable to bear the weight of the tragedy. He was engaged in a hushed conversation with Commissioner Abdul Rahman.
"I've seen some brutal killings in my time, Matthew," the Commissioner said, his voice laced with a mix of shock and concern, "but this...this is something else. With the advanced security installed in this mansion, I wouldn't have thought it possible."
Matthew sighed, his eyes scanning the foyer as if searching for answers. "My brother and his wife had many enemies, Commissioner. They were a powerful couple, and there were many who envied their success."
The Commissioner's expression turned thoughtful. "I see. Well, we'll need to investigate all possible angles. Can you tell me more about your brother's dealings? Any disputes or conflicts that might have led to this?"
Matthew nodded, his eyes clouding over. "There were...disagreements. Business rivals, mostly. But I never thought it would come to this."
As they spoke, forensic experts and police officers moved quietly through the mansion, collecting evidence and documenting the scene. Detective Don and Detective Sharon, two seasoned investigators, stood near the entrance, surveying the area.
The only other person present was Mr. Matthew Edwin's personal assistant, who stood discreetly near the stairs, his eyes red-rimmed from crying.
As the Commissioner and Mr. Matthew Edwin finished their conversation, the sound of footsteps echoed from upstairs. The twins, Julia and Julie, descended into the foyer, their eyes scanning the scene before them. They looked pale and shaken, their faces streaked with tears.
The Commissioner nodded to Mr. Matthew Edwin. "I think it's time we spoke to the twins. But let's do it in a more private setting."
Mr. Matthew Edwin nodded and led the twins to a nearby study. The Commissioner and the two detectives followed.
Once they were seated, the Commissioner began the questioning. "Julia, Julie, I know this is a difficult time, but we need to ask you some questions. Can you tell me what you saw or heard last night?"
Julia hesitated, glancing at her sister before speaking. "We didn't see or hear anything unusual, sir."
Julie nodded in agreement. "Yes, sir. We went to bed around 10 pm."
Detective Don leaned forward. "Can you tell me more about your parents' relationship? Were they having any problems?"
Julia's eyes dropped, and she fidgeted with her hands. "They were arguing a lot lately."
Julie added, "But we didn't think it was anything serious."
Detective Sharon nodded. "I see. And did you notice anything unusual around the house last night?"
Julie thought for a moment before speaking. "Actually, I saw someone lurking around the garden around 9 pm."
Detective Don's eyes narrowed. "Who was it?"
Julie hesitated. "I'm not sure, sir. It was dark, but the person looked like our gardener."
Detective Sharon's expression turned thoughtful. "What would the gardener be doing in the garden at 9 pm?"
Detective Don nodded. "That's a good question. We'll need to bring the gardener in for questioning."
The Commissioner nodded. "I agree. Let's get to the bottom of this."
As the questioning continued, Mr. Matthew Edwin's expression grew increasingly concerned. He couldn't bear the thought of his brother and sister-in-law being brutally murdered in their own home.
The detectives were determined to find the killer, but as they delved deeper into the case, they realized that nothing was as it seemed. The Edwin family was hiding secrets, and it would take all their skills and expertise to unravel the complex web of lies and deceit.
Just as they were about to call it a night, Detective Don received a call from the forensic lab. "We've got something," the technician said, her voice excited.
"What is it?" Detective Don asked, his heart racing with anticipation.
"We've found a piece of fabric caught in the window lock of the study. It's a piece of cloth from a black shirt."
Detective Don's eyes narrowed. "A black shirt? That's our killer's MO."
The technician nodded. "Yes, and we've also found a fingerprint on the window sill. It doesn't match anyone in the Edwin family or their staff."
Detective Don's eyes locked onto Detective Sharon's. "We've got our first lead."
The two detectives quickly made their way to the study, their hearts racing with excitement. They knew that this could be the break they needed to solve the case.
As they examined the window and the fabric, they realized that the killer must have entered and exited through the study window. But who was it? And why had they chosen to kill the Edwin patriarch and matriarch?
The detectives were determined to find out. They would follow every lead, every clue, until they found the killer and brought them to justice.
But as they stood there, examining the evidence, they couldn't shake off the feeling that they were missing something. That there was something more to the case, something that they hadn't yet discovered.
And then, just as they were about to leave the study, Detective Sharon noticed something. A small piece of paper on the floor, partially hidden under the desk.
She picked it up, examining it carefully. It was a note, written in a hasty scrawl.
"Meet me in the garden at midnight," it read. "Come alone."
Detective Sharon's eyes locked onto Detective Don's. "What do you think this means?" she asked, her voice barely above a whisper.
Detective Don's eyes narrowed. "I think it means we've got a lot more to investigate."
And with that, the two detectives set off to uncover the secrets of the Edwin family, and to find the killer who had left behind this cryptic note.
