Keeper of the lore, Gradians

Elena leaned back in her rocking chair, her gaze steady and knowing. "We are the shapeshifters, Kira. The ones who walk between worlds, bound to the moon and the primal energies of the earth. Elara… she was the Luna of our pack, the leader in her time. We are what humans call werewolves." Kira stared at Elena, her mouth slightly agape. Werewolves? The creatures of myth and legend? It seemed impossible, yet Elena's calm demeanor and the strange events of the past night lent a bizarre credibility to her words. "Werewolves…" Kira repeated, the word feeling foreign on her tongue. "But… I thought they were just… stories." Elena offered a small, sad smile. "Many things are hidden from the eyes of humans, Kira. For our own protection, and for the balance of the world. We have lived in the shadows, guarding this realm from threats you cannot even imagine." "And the Star-Winged Ones… the ones with wings like mine… they are connected to this… this war with the Shadowed Beast?" Kira asked, trying to piece together this unbelievable reality. "Deeply connected," Elena confirmed. "The celestial power that manifests in the wings… it is a force of light, a direct counter to the darkness that consumes the Shadowed Beast. Down through the ages, when he rises, so too does one of the Star-Winged. They are two sides of the same ancient coin, destined to clash." "And my… my wings… they just appeared," Kira said, still trying to process the transformation. "The awakening happens when it is needed," Elena explained. "When the Shadowed Beast stirs, when his power grows too strong in this realm, the celestial energy seeks a vessel. Your lineage, your own inner strength… something within you made you the one." "But… why me?" Kira whispered, feeling overwhelmed by the immensity of it all. "Perhaps," Elena said softly, her eyes twinkling with a hint of something unsaid, "it is not just about being a vessel, Kira. Perhaps it is also about the spirit you carry within you, a spark of light that resonates with the ancient power." She paused, her gaze becoming more intense. "The Shadowed Beast… he will come for you again. He always does. And you need to understand what you are, what you are capable of, if you are to survive." The cottage door creaked open again, and Elijah stepped inside, a look of concern etched on his face. He glanced between Kira and his grandmother, sensing the serious atmosphere. "Kira? Gram? Are you alright? I saw you heading this way earlier, Kira, and you looked… troubled." He paused, his eyes widening slightly as he finally took in the sight of the folded, silvery wings partially concealed beneath her jacket. A look of understanding, mixed with surprise, crossed his face. "Whoa… Kira? What… when did this happen?" Kira instinctively tried to hunch her shoulders, pulling the jacket tighter, a wave of self-consciousness washing over her despite the gravity of the situation. She hadn't fully processed her transformation herself, let alone considered how to explain it to Elijah. Elena rose slowly from her rocking chair, her gaze steady on her grandson. "Elijah, you sensed it, didn't you? The shift in the balance." Elijah nodded slowly, his eyes still fixed on Kira's wings. "Yeah… there's been a… resonance. I couldn't place it. This is… this is what it was." He looked at Kira, his initial surprise giving way to a protective concern. "Are you okay, Kira? What's going on?" Kira looked at Elijah, a wave of relief washing over her. She didn't have to explain the impossible; he already understood, on some level. Elena stepped closer to her grandson, placing a comforting hand on his arm. "Elijah, remember the legends we share? The stories of the Star-Winged One?" Elijah's gaze shifted from Kira to his grandmother, a dawning comprehension in his eyes. "The celestial guardian… the one who battles the Shadowed Beast?" "Kira," Elena said, her voice gentle but firm, "is the one who carries that light now." Elijah's eyes widened again, this time with a mixture of awe and a protective instinct that resonated deep within his shifter blood. He looked at Kira with a newfound understanding, a sense of ancient responsibility stirring within him. "The Shadowed Beast… was he the one who troubled you?" Elijah asked Kira, his voice low and concerned. Kira nodded, her voice trembling slightly. "He… he found me in the woods." Elena stepped forward, her gaze firm. "Then there is no time to lose. Elijah, you understand the significance of this. We need to protect her, to help her understand what she is." Elijah nodded resolutely, his gaze fixed on Kira. "Whatever it takes, Gram. What do we need to do?" Elijah's POV The sight of Kira's wings sent a jolt of recognition through me, a primal awareness that resonated deep within my bones. It was like a missing piece of an ancient puzzle had finally clicked into place. The legends… they weren't just stories. They were real. And Kira, this girl I'd known as a friend, was at the heart of it. My grandmother's words confirmed my suspicions. Kira was the Star-Winged One, the celestial guardian destined to face the Shadowed Beast. A wave of protectiveness washed over me, an instinct as old as our kind. This was no longer about simple friendship; it was about something far greater, something woven into the fabric of our existence. "The Shadowed Beast… was he the one who troubled you?" I asked Kira, my voice low and concerned. She nodded, her voice trembling slightly. "He… he found me in the woods." Gram's face hardened, her eyes filled with a grim determination. "Then there is no time to lose, Elijah. You understand the significance of this. We need to protect her, to help her understand what she is." I nodded, my gaze fixed on Kira. "Whatever it takes, Gram. What do we need to do?" Kira looked at both of us, her expression a mixture of fear and desperate curiosity. "The legend… tell me about the legend. Please." Gram nodded slowly. "I will tell you everything, child. But first, there is a call I need Elijah to make." She turned to me; her eyes filled with a mix of urgency and trust. "Elijah, please… I need you to call your uncle Gideon before we continue this conversation." I hesitated, a knot of unease tightening in my stomach. "Gram, are you sure? This can't wait." "It can't," she said, her voice firm but gentle. "Which is why I need you to call him. Trust me." I nodded reluctantly, knowing better than to argue with her when she had that tone. I stepped out of the cottage, the door closing behind me, leaving Kira and Gram alone. I pulled out my phone and dialed my uncle, Gideon, the Alpha of the Blackwood Pack. This wasn't going to be an easy conversation. "Gideon," I said, my voice low and urgent, when he answered. "We have a situation." "Elijah? What is it?" He sounded wary, concerned. "The Star-Winged One… she's awakened. She's here, with Gram." There was a long silence on the other end of the line. "By the Mother… that's impossible. How—" "I don't have time to explain everything now," I said, cutting him off. "You need to come to Gram's cottage. Now. We need to discuss what this means, what we need to do." "I'm on my way," he said, his voice grim. "Tell Elena I'll be there as soon as I can." I ended the call and stood for a moment, the weight of the situation pressing down on me. This was bigger than anything we'd faced before. My uncle needed to see Kira for himself, to understand the gravity of the situation. A few minutes later, Gideon's car pulled up to the cottage. He got out quickly, his expression serious and his eyes flashing with concern. I filled him in on the basics as we went inside.
