Chapter 4

Connor's POV: We got in the car, Adrian, Kade, and me. We were ready to go, but we haven't heard anything from Tess. Was she on her way? Or was she waiting for us to pick her up? The plan was to meet her there with some of her girl friends. But they tended to be flaky. Maybe we needed to stop by and see what the plan was. I pulled my phone out, just to look at the texts. Nothing from her. It didn't even show as delivered! "Hi, boys," a familiar taunting female voice said, sounding muffled since the doors were closed. I looked up to look at Raya. That bitch... She waved at us from in the tree line then blew us a kiss. "I hope you don't mind! But Tess isn't feeling well. She won't make it." Protectiveness flooded through my veins and I got out of the car, slamming the door shut. "What did you do?" I barked. "Check your phones," Raya cooed, sticking out her hip as she put her hands there. Kade growled as he stood next to me. "What do you mean by that?! Slaughterer!" Raya laughed maniacally, bending at the waist. "Check your attitude and you will see!" Her blue eyes pierced mine. "My condolences, Connor! Lincoln begged for that connection with you so he could've warned you!" That was it. I lunged forward, letting Tank take over. We ran into the trees, chasing after Lincoln's killer. "Connor!" Tess screamed from behind. Tess! She was okay! We have to go back! Make sure she's actually not hurt! I ordered Tank. She's with Kade and Adrian! She'll be fine! Tank replied. We trust them! But I'm pretty sure they're with us! Tank slowed as Kade and Adrian's wolves caught up to him. No! Tess was alone! I made him turn around instantly and we raced back to our mate. She was not going to get hurt on my watch! She came into view as we remembered. s**t! Our disguise! My eyes widened, even more so when I saw who was standing behind her. Callahan, the Lycan King. Tess tensed up as he set his hand on her shoulder and pulled her brown hair back. Tank and I growled as he smelt her neck, but we kept our distance, knowing better than to attack. We halted to a stop, staring in horror as we got protective of what belongs to us. Get your filthy paws off her! Callahan looked at me challengingly. "Go get Raya," he ordered. "She murdered your friend." I wanted to shift, talk some sense into Callahan, but I was stuck. If I did that, it could be a threat to the King. "I'll take care of her. I promise." I shook my head. No! I knew what that entailed! I wasn't about to let my mate fall victim to a ruthless king! "Well?" Callahan drawled out. "What are you waiting for? Go get her." Adrian's wolf dropped something next to me before he shifted. "Already did. Here's the traitor." Callahan looked at Adrian in admiration. He tsked a few times, shaking his head. Shit... Tess knows our secret, now! "I wouldn't have shifted if I were you. Now, I have to kill this human." Nooo"oooo," I yelled as I shifted, taking a step forward. "I won't let you!" Callahan put his nose in Tess's hair and took a deep breath through his nose. "Then I'll turn her," he groaned. "And she'll be all mine." He gave me a knowing glare, realization hitting me. He knew! I shook my head. "No." My voice shook. "Please, King Callahan. Let me do it." He shook his head. "Rules are rules." He let his fangs grow. "Tess, run!" I barked. Before the Lycan King could sink his fangs into my mate, she thrusted her elbow into his gut, making him double over. I had to get her out of here! Fast! "Kade!" I looked towards my brother, who looked at me all worried. He nodded his head, knowing his role. He instantaneously shifted and chased after Tess to keep her safe. I looked at my new enemy as Raya whimpered at Adrian's feet. She should be healing quickly, able to get away. "Raya, if you wanna redeem yourself," I started. "Then I suggest you fight to keep your friend safe. She's in danger." She plunged onto her paws, letting me know she was actually faking it. Adrian shifted, snarling. Tank took over and he and I knew it was about to get bloody. Teeth gnashed and met flesh. I tore into Callahan's wolve's throat, ready to kill and take his place. I may not be a lycan, but I would be a better king than him! Adrian and Raya helped me, reading each other's moves. Your left! Adrian warned me. I dropped down and Raya leaped over me to get on Callahan's back. She tore into it fiercely, not letting up. Callahan threw her off with ease, though. She yelped as she flew into a tree. We just need to distract him long enough for Tess to get away unscathed and safe! We knew this was a bad idea. But we had to for the sake of my mate. I loved her! "Son!" Dad yelled. "What's going on?!" I mind linked with him right away. Tess is in danger! Callahan knows she knows! Then stop! She's at the house! I couldn't let go, not with the threat that will go there. Tank snarled as Callahan twisted out of his hold and clamped down on his shoulder. "Stop!" Dad yelled. "I order you to stop!" Callahan butted Tank in the shoulder, making us fall over. He put his massive black paw on it, showing his dominance. "I'm in charge," Callahan said as he started to shift. "No one orders me around!" His weight stayed on top of us. "King Callahan. What is the meaning of this?" He looked at Dad. "It seems your son's mate is human. And she knows." "We'll handle it. I promise." "No one gets to change a human but me!" "You must make an acception. Please. It's Connor's mate! Fated. Mate." Please, oh please, oh please! Let me change her! Callahan growled. "No." Dad looked at me in horror. Go to her. And change her under the rule of an understanding lycan king. He ordered in the mind link. I'll take care of him. Shit... There was only one reason why Dad would deal with King Callahan like this. He believed it was his time.
