Prologue
Prologue;
“Help me!”
He turned around at an alarming speed. The voice seemed to have come from nowhere and everywhere at once.
The voice came again, a little louder and clearer this time.
“Kael! Help me! Please!”
It was faint and frantic, but it was definitely a woman’s voice.
Another scream followed, this time, with even more desperation.
He glanced around, realizing that he was in the middle of a thick forest. He squinted his eyes, wondering why the place felt familiar. But he was sure that this was an unknown territory.
The cold bit at his skin, yet he did not shiver. His breath didn’t fog the air either. It was even more strange that there was no scent of his pack and no hint of prey. It was eerily quiet that he couldn’t even hear the chirping of birds. The only sound he could hear was the distant, slow drip of unseen water.
He glanced around to find a way out of the forest, but there was none.
Suddenly, he heard someone call out his name. He turned around, his eyes darting around the forest.
“Who’s there?”
There was no answer. He inhaled deeply, believing that it was his head playing tricks on him.
“Kael!!!”
His muscles coiled, his wolf stirred restlessly within him. He let out a loud growl and his wolf came to life.
He ran.
Branches whipped his shoulders. Thorns tore his hands and it was as though his heart was going to burst out, but he didn’t stop. His heart raced, not with fear, but with a strange urgency he couldn’t explain.
That voice, he needed to reach it. To find her.
She screamed again, and this time, it sounded closer. Clearer.
His deep blue eyes were everywhere, the thick bushes, the trees and everything as he tried to find out who and where the sound came from.
Suddenly, the smell of Pine and something beautiful began to waft into his nose and he inhaled greedily, needing more of it.
“Mate,” Karl’s wolf growled.
He stood rooted to the spot. Unwilling to believe what he’d heard.
Mate? He almost laughed. He didn’t care if she was dying, it wasn’t his business. She’d die if she stayed with him anyways.
“Kael!” The voice screamed again and that hurt his ear. He felt blood oozing out and growled loudly.
He continued running, following the scent as it led him deep into the forest and closer to the voice of the person he now knew to be his mate.
The further he ran, the stronger the scent she released.
Kael broke through the underbrush and stumbled into an empty place which glowed in the moonlight. He was amazed by it and was just about to speak when he noticed the woman.
She was clad in white, her hair tangled, her wrists bound by what looked like thorns. Her face was turned away, but Kael was sure that she had been the one screaming.
He walked closer and She tilted her head slowly, looking over her shoulder. But just before he could see her face, her scream pierced the air once more, louder than ever.
And then,
His eyes snapped open.
