Chapter 4:the wedding

Elena’s pov; I watched as he stormed out of the room as though he’d been struck by something. The door opened again, and my eyes darted to it to meet the same familiar grey eyes from before. It was the man with a scar. He didn’t look menacing anymore. He placed a tray of food on the nightstand. “Can you sit?” I nodded and tried to sit up, wincing as I did. He moved closer as though to help me sit up, but I thought better of it and let me sit up myself. “How do you feel now?” I was startled by his show of concern. He took a step back. “I heard from the Alpha. I’m not going to hurt you, okay? I just want to take care of you until you’re better. Just let me do that.” I swallowed hard, wondering what he had heard from the Alpha. Was it everything? Including the fact that we were mates? “Will it make you more comfortable? I could get a maid to be with you.” A part of me felt bad for making him feel bad when he had been nothing but kind towards me. I shook my head and he gave me a warm smile before stepping towards the nightstand to carry the tray on the bed, but when I tried to reach for it, pain shot through me and I winced loudly. He was by my side in a second, making sure that he wasn’t close enough to offend me as he sat on the edge of the bed. “In a few days, you’ll be okay,” he smiled, and I nodded. He opened the food and held out a spoonful for me. I thought about turning him away, but I thought better of it and opened my mouth instead, to take the food. After a while, I shook my head, signifying that I couldn’t take anymore. He handed me some pills, and I glanced at him, my eyes filled with fear. “Oh,” he glanced at it. “They’re painkillers. For the pain. I won’t hurt you, Elena. That’s your name, right?” I nodded. “I’m Ralph, the beta.” I glanced at the pills on his outstretched arms and took it immediately. He got up from the bed. “Would you like me to run you a warm bath?” I shook my head vigorously, and my eyes landed on the paper and charcoal from earlier. “What’s going to happen to me?” He repeated the words and let out a deep breath. My heart slammed hard against my chest. His silence could not be good. “I’m not sure, Elena. But we’ll have a meeting to talk about that. I believe that you’re innocent.” I nodded and then wrote again. “Please don’t send me back.” He nodded. “I don’t want you to go back. But it depends on the conclusion of the council and the decision of Alpha Kael.” Alpha Kael? He didn’t seem pleased as he walked out of the room. He would not care that I was his mate. After all, I was a mute Omega. “Don’t worry, I’m sure the Alpha would let you stay here,” he glanced at his wristwatch. “Talking about the meeting, I have to go now.” I nodded. Whatever happens, I wouldn’t go back to Alpha Darien, never! Just as he reached the door, he turned and walked towards me. I sat up straighter, my heart racing as I wondered what he intended to do. “What did you do in the moonfall pack?” I furrowed my brows in confusion, wondering what he meant by that question. “I mean, what do you know how to do? We have to know where to place you if the council decides to keep you.” I grabbed the paper and began to scribble furiously. “I know a few herbs with healing properties. I can work in the infirmary.” “Ohh,” his eyes lit up. “A healer. That’s perfect! There is an open recruitment for healers at the moment. You could be interviewed too,” and with that, he walked out of the room. ************************ I didn’t know how long I had been waiting, but I kept praying to the moon goddess to be allowed to stay. I couldn’t take any more abuse, and I was even more certain that Alpha Darien was going to kill me when I got back. He had spent years preparing for the blood moon, and now, I had ruined it. When the door opened, I sprang up immediately. “Elena.” My heart raced as my eyes met his. Alpha Kael. My wolf stirred within me, and I pushed her back. Not now, not yet. He obviously didn’t want to acknowledge the bond, I didn’t mind that. If he could just let me stay. “I heard that you’re a healer,” he muttered something I couldn’t hear. “Of some sort.” I nodded. I couldn’t think of anything, I was more than certain that I knew what he wanted. “I am sorry about what you had to go through in moonfall pack” I glanced up at him, wondering if I was wrong. “Ralph speaks highly of you. He wants you to stay here.” I nodded. He sat at the edge of the bed. “Alpha Darien is an enemy, my arch enemy. I have no reason to spare anyone from his territory, especially his play thing.” My heart clenched tightly at his words. His plaything? “I don’t give a f**k if he tries to mark you or not. He’s your Alpha. It doesn’t matter that you’re my…mate,” His tone made the word sound as though it was an abomination. Me, being his mate. “The council and I have decided that you can stay here and work in the infirmary..” I broke into a grin, and he stopped speaking for a while. When I noticed that he was staring at me, I realized that he had more to say, and I kept quiet, waiting for him to continue. “You’ll be under probation for a few months. Your room will be shown to you in the maid’s quarters,” he glanced at me upon seeing the expression on my face. I wasn’t bothered that I had to stay at the maid’s quarters when I was his mate but still it hurt to hear him say that. “About our bond, you do know it’s impossib, e right?” He didn’t wait for me to speak and continued speaking. “It would be in your best interest to keep it to yourself, although I know that you’re a smart woman.” I nodded, the thick lump in my throat, making it difficult for me to swallow. At least, I was safe, and I could start a new life. “You can stay here until you’re better, and then you can join the rest of the healers later.” Just as he made to leave, the door swung open, and a woman walked in. She had long dark hair that fell below her shoulders. Her eyes lit up as she walked towards him, wrapping her arms around him. My wolf immediately became agitated. “I heard you’re in here…,” and then her eyes fell on me, and she smiled as though she’d seen something exciting. “Ahh she’s the one! Such a cute little thing.” She threw her hands around me. “I’m sorry for startling you. I’m Joeline. I hope you get better, so you can attend our wedding,” she giggled and turned to him. “It’s tomorrow, right honey?” What? I glanced at him, but he turned away, deliberately avoiding my eyes. “Yes honey pie, our wedding is tomorrow”
