The house shouldn’t have felt alive, but the moment Tara stepped inside, the air shifted — warm, like breath against her throat. The floorboards creaked under her boots, not with age, but with something closer to anticipation. She told herself it was just the storm outside, the way the wind pressed against the old siding. But she felt it: a pulse, faint and rhythmic, traveling up through the wood and into her bones.

The House that Watches
The house shouldn’t have felt alive, but the moment Michelle stepped inside, the air shifted — warm, like breath against her throat. The floorboards creaked under her boots, not with age, but with something closer to anticipation. She told herself it was just the storm outside, the way the wind pressed against the old siding. But she felt it: a pulse, faint and rhythmic, traveling up through the wood and into her bones. She wasn’t afraid. She should have been. The inheritance letter had been simple: The property at Blackwater Hollow now belongs to you. No explanation. No signature. Just coordinates and a key that looked older than the town itself. She’d driven three hours in the rain to reach it, chasing the hope of a fresh start after a breakup that had hollowed her out. But the house felt anything but empty. Lightning flashed through the windows, illuminating the long hallway ahead. For a moment, she saw a silhouette at the far end — tall, lean, unmoving. When she blinked, it was gone. Her heart kicked hard, but something inside her whispered not to run. She moved deeper. The scent hit her next: cedar, smoke, and something darker, like the warmth of skin after a fevered kiss. It wrapped around her, coaxing her forward. She touched the wall, and the wood shivered beneath her fingertips. “Michelle.” Her name drifted through the hallway, low and intimate, like someone whispering directly into her ear. She spun, but no one was there. The voice wasn’t threatening. It was… longing. The storm roared outside, but inside the house, the air thickened, charged with a strange heat. Her breath came faster. She didn’t understand why her body responded — why her pulse quickened, why her skin tingled as though invisible hands traced her shoulders. Then she saw him. He stood at the top of the staircase, half-shadowed, half-lit by the flickering chandelier. His eyes were the first thing she noticed — black, bottomless, hungry. Not for food. Not for violence. For her. His voice slid down the stairs like velvet. “You came back.” “I’ve never been here,” she whispered, though her voice trembled with something that wasn’t fear. A slow smile curved his mouth, sharp and beautiful. “You have. Not in this life.” The house groaned around them, the walls tightening like a held breath. Michelle felt the pull — ancient, magnetic, wrong in all the ways that made her want to step closer. “Who are you?” she asked. He descended one step, then another, each movement deliberate, predatory, graceful. “I am what this house keeps. What it feeds. What it loves.” Her throat tightened. “And what does it want from me?” He reached the bottom step, stopping just inches away. His presence radiated heat, dark and intoxicating. “It wants you to remember,” he murmured. “And it wants me to finish what we started.” The lights flickered. The floorboards throbbed beneath her feet. And Michelle realized the house wasn’t alive because of him. He was alive because of the house.
