Chapter2:THE WARNING

1675 Words
Chapter 2 The Warning Kael Donovan kept to himself during his first full day at Westbridge High. He did not try to make friends. He did not sit with anyone at lunch. He ate alone at a table near the back of the cafeteria with his eyes fixed on his phone. Students walked past him and glanced at him but he did not look up. He was polite when spoken to but his answers were short and gave nothing away. He offered no details about his past. He offered no hints about his life before Westbridge. He was a blank page and that made people curious and frustrated in equal measure. Aria Bennett watched him from across the cafeteria. She sat with Selena and a few other friends but her attention kept drifting to the boy at the back table. She noticed things about him that others missed. He never touched anyone. When a student accidentally brushed against him in the lunch line he flinched like he had been burned. He always sat near the exit. He scanned every room he entered like he was looking for threats. His shoulders were always tense. His jaw was always tight. He was always ready for something. Aria did not know what he was ready for but she could feel his vigilance from across the room. Selena nudged her and pointed at Kael. Look at him sitting there all alone. He is so mysterious. I love it. I am going to talk to him today Aria shook her head. Leave him alone Selena. He clearly wants to be left alone Selena flipped her hair and smirked. He does not know what he wants yet. Trust me Selena approached Kael's table after lunch. She smiled her brightest smile and asked if she could sit with him. He looked up at her and his expression was neutral. He said the seat was taken. Selena looked around at the empty table and laughed nervously. There is nobody here. He said he was saving it for a friend. Selena asked if that friend was coming. He said he did not know. Selena stood there awkwardly for a moment and then walked away. Her face was red. Aria felt bad for her but she also felt a strange relief that she did not understand. The rest of the day passed slowly. Aria could not focus on her classes. She kept thinking about Kael. The way he had looked at her on his first day. The way he had held her gaze like he was searching for something. The way he flinched when people touched him. The way he always seemed to be watching the exits. She wondered if something had happened to him. She wondered if someone had hurt him. She wondered if that was why he was so guarded. History class came at the end of the day. Aria walked in and took her usual seat near the back. She saw Kael already sitting at his desk near the middle of the room. His notebook was open and his pen was ready. He looked like he had been waiting for the class to start. Damon Cross walked in a few minutes later. He did not look at Kael. He walked to his usual seat in the far corner and sat down with his arms crossed. Zane Mercer followed him and sat beside him. The two of them whispered to each other. Aria could not hear the words but she saw Damon's eyes flick toward Kael with cold hatred. The teacher began the lesson. The topic was the Treaty of Versailles and its impact on Europe after World War One. The teacher asked a question about the economic consequences of the treaty. She asked what had happened to Germany's economy after the war. Nobody raised their hand. The teacher looked around the room and sighed. She was clearly frustrated. Anyone at all she asked again Aria knew the answer. She had read about it in her textbook the night before. But she did not want to speak. She hated drawing attention to herself. She kept her head down and stared at her notebook. She hoped the teacher would move on to another question. Then Kael spoke. His voice was calm and steady. He said the Treaty of Versailles had forced Germany to pay massive reparations that crippled its economy. He said the reparations led to hyperinflation and the devaluation of the German mark. He said ordinary citizens watched their life savings become worthless overnight. He talked about the resentment that grew among the German people because they felt humiliated and punished unfairly. He talked about how that resentment fueled the rise of extremist political movements. He talked about how the treaty did not create lasting peace. It created the conditions for another war. He expanded on his answer with details that were not even in the textbook. He talked about specific figures and dates. He talked about political leaders and their decisions. He talked about the missed opportunities for reconciliation. His knowledge was deep and his analysis was sharp. The teacher blinked in surprise. She was clearly impressed. She nodded slowly and said that was exactly right. She asked him how he knew so much about the topic. He said he read a lot. The class went silent. Everyone stared at him. Some of the students looked impressed. Others looked confused. Kael did not seem to notice any of them. He just opened his notebook and started writing like nothing had happened. Damon Cross was furious. Aria saw the change in his face. His jaw tightened and his hands clenched into fists under his desk. His knuckles turned white. His eyes burned with cold hatred. He had been the smartest student in the grade for years. He always had the right answers. He always got the teachers praise. He was known for his intelligence and he took pride in it. Now this new boy had stolen his moment without even trying. Kael had answered the question perfectly and he had done it so casually that it seemed effortless. Damon had been about to answer. He had opened his mouth to speak. Then Kael had spoken first and made him look irrelevant. Zane Mercer leaned over and whispered something to Damon. Aria could not hear the words but she saw Damon nod slowly. His eyes never left the back of Kael's head. He was not just annoyed. He was enraged. Something about Kael provoked a deep and personal hatred in him. Aria did not understand it but she could feel the tension in the room like electricity in the air. When the bell rang Kael gathered his things and left quickly. He did not look back. He walked out of the classroom with purpose and disappeared into the crowded hallway. Aria watched him go. She noticed the way he moved. He did not linger. He did not talk to anyone. He just vanished into the flow of students like a shadow. Aria stood up and gathered her own things. She caught a glimpse of Damon and Zane huddled together near the door. They were whispering again. Their faces were serious and intense. Damon was speaking quickly and Zane was nodding. They looked like they were planning something. Aria felt a chill run down her spine. She did not know what they were planning but she knew it was not good. She left the classroom and walked toward the front doors. The school day was over and students were heading home. She saw Kael near the entrance. He was standing by the window and looking out at the sky. The sun was setting and the first hints of moonlight were visible. He looked afraid. It was just a flicker across his face. A split second of terror that he quickly masked. But Aria saw it. She saw the fear in his eyes when he looked at the moon. She wanted to ask him about it. She wanted to walk up to him and demand to know what he was hiding. She wanted to understand why he was so intelligent and so distant. She wanted to know why Damon hated him so quickly. She wanted to know why he looked at the moon like it was his enemy. But she did not. She was too shy. Too cautious. Too used to staying invisible. She walked past him and out the front doors. She felt his eyes on her back. She knew he was watching her. She did not turn around. She walked to her car and drove home in silence. Her mind was full of questions and she did not have answers. That night she lay in her bed and stared at the ceiling. She thought about Kael's perfect answer in history class. She thought about the way he had spoken with such confidence and knowledge. She thought about the way Damon had reacted with such hatred. She thought about the fear in Kael's eyes when he looked at the moon. The pull in her chest was still there. It had not gone away. It was like a string tied to her heart and the other end was somewhere out in the dark. She did not sleep well that night. She kept thinking about him. About his eyes. About his voice. About the way he had looked at her on his first day. About the fear he had tried to hide. Something was coming. She did not know what it was but she could feel it. And for the first time in her life she wanted to be part of something instead of just watching from the shadows. She decided she would find out who Kael Donovan really was. She would not stop until she had answers. She did not know how dangerous that decision would become. She did not know what she was walking into. But she knew she could not ignore the pull in her chest. She had to follow it wherever it led.
