THE MYSTERIOUS BOY
Chapter 1 The Mysterious Boy
Westbridge High was not a school that saw much excitement. It was the kind of place where everyone knew everyone and nothing ever changed. The same faces in the same hallways day after day. The same gossip about the same people. The same routine that made every week feel like a replay of the last.
Aria Bennett had grown used to it. She walked through the crowded hallway with her head down and her books pressed against her chest. She was not invisible but she was close to it. She preferred it that way. Being noticed meant being talked about and she had no interest in being the subject of anyone's conversation.
Selena Brooks had no such preference. She walked beside Aria with her head high and her eyes scanning the crowd for anyone worth looking at. She was pretty and she knew it. She used it like a weapon. Every smile was calculated. Every laugh was perfectly timed.
Aria loved her anyway. Selena had been her best friend since middle school and she knew the girl behind the performance. The one who stayed up late with her during tough times. The one who defended her against bullies. The one who made her laugh until her stomach hurt. That was the Selena Aria held onto even when the performance got tiring.
Today the hallway was buzzing with something unusual. Aria noticed it immediately. The usual chatter was louder. People were huddled in groups and whispering. Some of the girls were fixing their hair and smoothing their clothes.
What is going on Aria asked
Selena grabbed her arm and pulled her toward a window that overlooked the front entrance. There is a new student transferring in. Mid semester. Nobody knows anything about him. He is supposed to be gorgeous. Like really gorgeous
Aria rolled her eyes. You are ridiculous
I am curious Selena said. There is a difference
The front doors opened and the principal walked in followed by a boy. Aria could not see him clearly from the window. Just a tall figure in a dark jacket with broad shoulders. He moved with a quiet confidence that made people step aside without thinking.
Selena gasped. Oh my God. Look at him
Aria looked. The boy stepped into the hallway and the noise around him seemed to drop. He was tall and handsome in a way that was almost unsettling. His jaw was sharp. His eyes were dark and deep. His hair was black and slightly messy like he had run his fingers through it too many times. He wore a simple black jacket and jeans but he made it look like he had walked off a magazine cover.
Every girl in the hallway stopped to stare. Even some of the boys paused to watch him pass.
Aria felt something too but it was not like the others. She felt a strange pull in her chest. Something that tugged at her attention and refused to let go. It was not attraction. It was something deeper. Something she could not name.
The new boy looked around the crowded hallway. His expression was calm and neutral. He did not seem impressed by the attention. He did not seem to notice the stares. He scanned the faces like he was looking for something or someone.
Then his eyes landed on Aria.
He held her gaze for a moment longer than necessary. His dark eyes were unreadable but she felt like he was seeing her. Not looking at her. Seeing her. Like he could see past her skin and into her thoughts.
She looked away first. Her face felt warm.
Selena tugged her arm. He looked at you. He actually looked at you. Why would he look at you
Aria shrugged and tried to act like it did not matter. Maybe he was just looking around
He was looking at you Selena said. Her voice had an edge that Aria did not recognize. It was gone as quickly as it came replaced by a bright smile. Come on. Let us find out who he is
The principal led the new boy toward the office. Students parted like water around a stone. Whispers followed him down the hallway.
Who is he
I have never seen him before
Where did he come from
Did you see his eyes
He is so beautiful
Aria watched him disappear through the office door. She felt the strange pull again. It was faint but it was there. She did not know what it meant. She only knew that something about that boy was different.
She spent the rest of the day trying to focus on her classes. It did not work. Her mind kept drifting back to the moment their eyes had met. The way he had looked at her. The way she had felt seen.
At lunch she sat with Selena and a few other friends. The conversation was all about the new student. His name was Kael Donovan. Nobody knew where he came from. Nobody knew why he transferred. His file was sealed according to the office staff.
He is mysterious Selena said dreamily. I love mysterious
He is probably hiding something Aria said. People do not just transfer mid semester without a reason
Selena waved her hand dismissively. Maybe he just wanted a fresh start. Who cares. He is gorgeous and he is here
Aria did not push it. She ate her lunch in silence and listened to the gossip. She heard that Kael would be in her history class. She felt a flutter of something in her chest. She told herself it was just curiosity.
History class came at the end of the day. Aria walked in and found her usual seat near the back. She liked the back. It gave her a view of the whole room. She could observe without being observed.
The teacher was writing notes on the board when the door opened. Kael Donovan walked in with a slip of paper in his hand. The teacher took it and read it and then gestured to an empty desk near the middle of the room.
You can sit there Mr Donovan. Please try to catch up on the material
Kael nodded and walked to the desk. He did not look at anyone. He sat down and opened his notebook like he had been in the class for weeks.
Aria watched him from behind. She noticed the way his shoulders were tense. The way his fingers gripped his pen a little too tight. He was nervous. She had not expected that. He looked so calm on the outside but he was not calm at all.
The teacher started the lesson. The class was about the Treaty of Versailles. The teacher asked a question about the economic consequences of the treaty. Nobody raised their hand. The teacher looked around the room with a sigh.
Anyone at all
Aria knew the answer but she did not want to speak. She hated drawing attention to herself. She kept her head down and hoped the teacher would move on.
Then Kael spoke.
His voice was calm and steady. He gave the correct answer. Then he expanded on it. He talked about the hyperinflation in Germany. He talked about the resentment that fueled the rise of extremism. He talked about the missed opportunities for lasting peace. His knowledge went far beyond the textbook.
The teacher blinked. She was clearly impressed. That is exactly right Mr Donovan. How do you know so much about this topic
I read a lot Kael said simply
The class went silent. Everyone stared at him. He did not seem to notice. He just opened his notebook and started writing like nothing had happened.
Aria noticed something else. In the far corner of the room a boy named Damon Cross was staring at Kael with cold hatred. His jaw was tight and his hands were clenched into fists under his desk.
Damon was one of the smartest students in the school. He always had the right answers. He always got the teachers praise. Now this new boy had stolen his moment without even trying.
Aria did not know Damon well. He was quiet and kept to himself. But there was something about him that made her uneasy. His smile never reached his eyes. His kindness always felt like a trap.
Zane Mercer leaned over and whispered something to Damon. Aria could not hear the words but she saw Damon nod slowly. His eyes never left Kael's back.
When the bell rang Kael gathered his things and left quickly. Aria watched him go. He moved with purpose. He did not linger or talk to anyone. He just disappeared into the crowded hallway.
She stood up and gathered her own things. She caught a glimpse of Damon and Zane huddled together near the door. They were whispering again. Their faces were serious.
Aria felt a chill. Something was wrong. She did not know what it was but she could feel it in her bones.
She walked out of the classroom and into the hallway. The crowd was thinning as students headed home or to after school activities. She saw Kael near the front doors. He was looking out the window at the sky. The sun was setting and the first hints of moonlight were visible.
He looked afraid.
It was just a flicker across his face. A split second of terror that he quickly masked. But Aria saw it. She saw the fear in his eyes when he looked at the moon.
She wanted to ask him about it. She wanted to walk up to him and demand to know what he was hiding. But she did not. She was too shy. Too cautious. Too used to staying invisible.
Instead she walked past him and out the front doors. She felt his eyes on her back. She knew he was watching her. She did not turn around.
She walked to her car and drove home in silence. Her mind was full of questions. Who was Kael Donovan. Why was he so intelligent and so distant. Why did Damon hate him so quickly. Why did he look at the moon like it was his enemy.
She did not have answers. But she was determined to find them.
That night she sat in her room and stared at the ceiling. The pull in her chest was still there. It had not gone away. It was like a string tied to her heart and the other end was somewhere out in the dark.
She did not sleep well that night. She kept thinking about his eyes. About the way he had looked at her. About the fear he had tried to hide.
Something was coming. She did not know what it was but she could feel it.
And for the first time in her life she wanted to be part of something instead of just watching from the shadows.
