The Contract Nobody Knew About
Episode 1: The Contract Nobody Knew About The rain had been falling since midnight. By seven in the morning, the streets of New York were already crowded with people rushing to work, their umbrellas moving like dark flowers beneath the gray sky. Emma Carter stood outside the towering glass building of Hayes International, staring at the company name above the entrance. She took a deep breath. Today was supposed to be the beginning of a new life. Or at least, that was what she hoped. At twenty-four, Emma had learned that life rarely gave people what they expected. Three months ago, she had lost her job at a small publishing company after the business suddenly closed. Two weeks later, her landlord had warned her that she needed to pay three months of overdue rent. And yesterday, the hospital had called about her mother's growing medical bills. Emma had spent the entire night searching for work. Then, at six in the morning, she received an email. "Congratulations. You have been selected for a private interview at Hayes International." The salary listed beneath the invitation had made her stare at the screen for almost five minutes. It was more money than she had ever earned. There was only one strange thing. The email had been personally authorized by Alexander Hayes, the company's billionaire CEO. Emma had never met him. She had never applied directly to Hayes International. So why would the billionaire CEO personally request an interview with her? She pushed the thought away. She needed the job. Whatever the reason, she would find out. Emma walked through the enormous glass doors. The reception area looked more like a five-star hotel than an office. Marble floors. Golden lights. Expensive furniture. Employees dressed in perfectly tailored suits. Emma looked down at her simple black dress and suddenly felt uncomfortable. A receptionist looked up. "Good morning. How may I help you?" "I'm here for an interview with Mr. Hayes." The receptionist's expression changed slightly. "Mr. Hayes?" "Yes." "May I have your name?" "Emma Carter." The receptionist typed something into her computer. After a few seconds, she stood. "Mr. Hayes is expecting you." Emma's heart skipped. Expecting her? Not his assistant. Not the human resources department. Him. "Please take the private elevator to the forty-eighth floor." Emma nodded. "Thank you." The elevator doors closed. As the numbers climbed, Emma watched her reflection in the mirrored wall. She looked nervous. Very nervous. When the elevator reached the forty-eighth floor, the doors opened silently. A tall man in a black suit was waiting. "Miss Carter?" "Yes." "I'm Daniel. Mr. Hayes's executive assistant." He studied her for a moment before turning. "Please follow me." Emma walked behind him. They passed several employees who immediately became quiet when they saw Daniel. Something about the atmosphere felt unusual. Finally, Daniel stopped in front of a massive wooden door. He knocked twice. "Come in." The voice from inside was deep and calm. Daniel opened the door. Emma stepped inside. The first thing she noticed was the view. The entire city stretched beneath the enormous windows. The second thing she noticed was the man standing near the glass. Alexander Hayes. He was taller than she expected. His black suit fit perfectly, and his expression was colder than the rain outside. He turned slowly. Their eyes met. For a moment, neither spoke. Then Alexander said, "Leave us." Daniel nodded and closed the door. Emma swallowed. "Mr. Hayes?" "Emma Carter." He said her name as if he had known it for years. "Yes." Alexander walked toward his desk. "Sit." Emma sat. He remained standing. "I assume you are wondering why you're here." "Honestly, yes." He picked up a thin black folder from his desk. "This is your background report." Emma's face changed. "My background report?" "I know about your mother's illness. Your financial situation. Your previous employment. Your education." Emma stared at him. "Why?" Alexander placed the folder down. "Because I need you." She blinked. "Need me?" "Yes." "I don't understand." "You will." He opened a drawer and removed another document. "This is a contract." Emma looked at it. There was a single sentence at the top. CONFIDENTIAL PRIVATE AGREEMENT. Her heart began beating faster. "What kind of contract is this?" Alexander looked directly into her eyes. "A marriage contract." Emma froze. For several seconds, she wondered whether she had heard him correctly. "I'm sorry?" "You heard me." "A marriage contract?" "Yes." Emma stood immediately. "Mr. Hayes, if this is some kind of joke—" "It isn't." He remained completely calm. "I am offering you five million dollars." Emma stared at him. "Five million?" "Upon completion of the agreement." She shook her head. "This is insane." "You will also receive a monthly allowance, a private apartment, full medical coverage for your mother, and protection from the media." Emma couldn't believe what she was hearing. "Why would you want to marry me?" Alexander's expression hardened. "Because I need a wife." "Then find someone else." "I tried." His voice became quieter. "Every woman around me wants something." Emma almost laughed. "And you think I don't?" "I know you need money." Her face tightened. "That's insulting." "It's the truth." Alexander stepped closer. "You need money to save your mother. I need a wife to protect my position." Emma looked away. "What position?" "My grandfather's will." That caught her attention. Alexander continued. "My grandfather created Hayes International. Before his death, he added a condition to his will." "What condition?" "If I am not married before my twenty-ninth birthday, I lose control of the company." Emma stared at him. "You're telling me that a billionaire needs to get married to keep his company?" "Exactly." "And you chose me?" "I didn't choose you randomly." The room became silent. Emma slowly sat down again. "Why me?" Alexander didn't answer immediately. Instead, he opened the black folder. "There is another reason." He pushed a photograph across the desk. Emma looked at it. Her entire body went cold. It was a photograph of her mother. But she wasn't alone. Standing beside her was a man Emma had never seen before. And behind them was a younger version of Alexander Hayes. Emma looked up. "What is this?" Alexander's expression changed for the first time. Pain appeared in his eyes. "That photograph was taken twenty-five years ago." Emma stared at it. "My mother never told me about this." "She didn't tell you many things." "What does my mother have to do with you?" Alexander leaned against the desk. "That's what I am trying to discover." Emma's fingers tightened around the photograph. "You said you needed a wife. Now you're talking about my mother." "Because they are connected." "How?" "I don't know yet." Emma stood. "Then why involve me?" "Because someone has been watching you." Her heart stopped. "What?" Alexander walked toward the window. "Three weeks ago, someone broke into your apartment." Emma remembered. She had thought it was simply a failed robbery. But nothing had been stolen. "How did you know?" "I had people watching." Emma stared at him. "You were watching me?" "Protecting you." "That's not better." "I know." She shook her head. "This is too much." Alexander turned. "Your mother once worked for a private organization connected to my family." Emma's eyes widened. "What organization?" "That's the problem." "What problem?" "Everyone who knew about it is either dead, missing, or refusing to talk." Emma felt a chill. "And you think my mother knows something?" "I think she knows everything." Emma looked down at the photograph again. Her mother's face looked younger. Happy. But there was something in her expression that Emma had never seen before. Fear. "Why didn't she tell me?" "Maybe she was protecting you." Emma slowly raised her eyes. "From whom?" Alexander didn't answer. A sudden knock came from the door. Daniel entered. "Sir, we have a problem." Alexander's expression immediately became serious. "What happened?" "The man we were tracking has disappeared." "Who?" Daniel looked at Emma. Then at Alexander. "Victor Kane." Alexander's face went pale. Emma noticed. "Who is Victor Kane?" Daniel hesitated. Alexander answered. "Someone who should have been dead." Emma felt another chill. "What does he want?" Alexander walked toward the door. "You." Emma's breath caught. "Me?" "Yes." Daniel placed a phone on the desk. The screen showed a message. UNKNOWN NUMBER: SHE DOESN'T KNOW WHO SHE REALLY IS. Emma stared at the words. A second message appeared. IF ALEXANDER MARRIES HER, THEY BOTH DIE. Silence filled the office. Emma looked at Alexander. He was no longer the cold billionaire she had met ten minutes ago. He looked genuinely afraid. "Mr. Hayes..." "Alexander." "What are you going to do?" He walked toward her. His voice was low. "You're going to leave this building with me." Emma stepped backward. "I don't understand." "You don't have to." "Why?" "Because whoever sent that message knows something we don't." He picked up the contract. "And if you want your mother protected, you have only one choice." Emma looked at the contract. Then at Alexander. "You want me to marry you." "Yes." "For how long?" "One year." "And after one year?" "The contract ends." "No feelings?" "None." Emma almost smiled bitterly. "That's easy for you to say." Alexander's eyes held hers. "It will be easier if we both remember this is business." Emma looked down. Five million dollars. Her mother's hospital bills. A new apartment. Protection. But behind all of that was a mystery. Her mother. Alexander's family. A missing man. And a warning that could cost them their lives. She picked up the pen. Alexander watched silently. Emma hesitated. "One condition." "What?" "My mother comes first." "Agreed." "And you never lie to me." Alexander became silent. That silence told Emma everything. "You can't promise that, can you?" "I can promise to tell you the truth when I discover it." Emma stared at him. It wasn't the answer she wanted. But she had no other choice. She signed the contract. Alexander took the document. For a moment, their fingers touched. Neither moved. Then Alexander looked at the signature. "Congratulations, Mrs. Hayes." Emma's heart jumped. "Don't call me that yet." A faint smile appeared on his face. "You're right." He closed the folder. "We have a wedding to plan." Emma turned toward the window. Outside, the rain had stopped. But something told her the storm was only beginning. She didn't know that the contract she had just signed was not the real secret. The real secret was hidden inside Alexander Hayes's family. And before their fake marriage was over, Emma would discover that the billionaire she had agreed to marry had been searching for her long before they ever met. Because twenty-five years ago, her mother had made a promise. And Alexander's grandfather had never forgotten it.
