James “Mother!” I bellowed through the house the moment I stepped inside. One deep breath told me all I needed—just the familiar scents of our family lingering in the air. Relief washed over me. Laila was safe. Still, I don’t know why I even hoped my mom would be home. She should’ve been at work, as usual. I tried mindlinking her—nothing. She felt far, well beyond the pack borders. Work, then. I reached for my father next. Also nothing. “Fay!” I called out again, storming toward her wing, attempting to mindlink her too. But she didn’t answer either, and she felt distant—off pack grounds just like our parents. What the hell? Where was everyone? I pivoted and tried Adriana. “Adriana!” I practically shouted through the mindlink. “For the Goddess’s sake, James, why are you screaming?”
