CHAPTER 49

1300 Words

The moment the darkness touches me, I scream. It happens so fast my mind cannot catch up. A tendril of shadow whips up from the creature’s torn body and coils around my ankle. The cold sinks straight into my bone. It feels like ice with teeth. My wolf surges forward instinctively, trying to shift fully, trying to fight, but her form flickers in and out. My human body struggles to return at the same time. Pain tears through my limbs as both halves of me pull in opposite directions. My throat burns with the sound escaping me. Not human. Not wolf. Something caught between worlds. Adam is beside me before the second scream shakes loose. His hands clamp onto my arms, one on each bicep, fingers digging into my skin like he is terrified that if he loosens his grip even slightly, I will vanish.
