My body jerks so hard that pain shoots up my spine. For a moment there is no air. No sound. No thought. Then my heart slams back to life with a violent crack. It feels like something punched through my ribs from the inside. Silver light bursts across my chest in branching patterns. The glow races along my skin like veins becoming molten. My back arches in Adam’s arms as if an invisible force is pulling me upward. “Addison.” Adam’s voice tears through the ringing in my ears. He gathers me tighter against him. “Look at me.
