Prologue
In our world, we stare at the stories of others wishing that they were our own. I wonder, if the theories of multiple worlds was actually correct. Wouldn’t that mean that somewhere out there, there is a world that read and watches us and longs for our lives? “Okay Robert, read starting from page 50 of the textbook.” Robert moans in discomfort before grabbing the textbook that was bigger than his hands. He flips through the pages with long swipe before reaching the page. With a sigh, he begins. “She headed to the closet with a determination she had hoped to keep for the rest of the year. She was determined to fix this house as much as possible without her parents bothering her. When she opened that closet door, her eyes darted to the side filled with cleaning utensil ignoring the other side full of instruments. At the top shelf, she saw a few different towels of different color and type. She got the freshest and nice one and closed the closet after checking that everything was in place.” “Okay. Sara it’s your turn.” Sara was already on the page not missing a beat. “Looking back at the pale full of water, she turned off the flow of water from the faucet staring at the clear reflection for a few minutes. She seemed lost in thought but immediately opened the cabinet under the faucet and was already pouring the liquid that she didn’t fully know its purpose. She had done this multiple times before and seemed completely in sync with the movements meant for this action. Dropping the towel in the pale full of soapy water she mixes it a bit before heading to the kitchen to dry her hands to get something she forgot. After finding another suitable towel for dusting, she was already dusting the couch.” “Tiffany, you g-“ The words were interrupted as the door flies open and another student joins the class by flying across it and going through the window with resolution. Another student enters casually, apologizes, and jumps out of the window to follow the previous kid. The teacher stared a bit infuriated but simply brushed it off as nothing. “Tiffany, you go.” Tiffany stares at the papers, a headache seeping through them. She stared at the page with determination only for it to break as the words change before her eyes. She looks up to the teacher with pleading eyes hoping she won’t let her get embarrassed again. The only answer, annoyed eyes. With a sigh, she continues where her classmates had left off. “She stopped a minute with a seemingly confused face and looks up to her tv playing one of the many favorite songs that she had programmed to play. She liked the song, nothing bad about it, but the words seemed to sink into her like she was the same towel she was holding. The thoughts weren’t bad. They weren’t depressing or anything, but this seemingly normal moment where she had stopped to think. Stopped to wonder her schedule of items and necessities. From recent occurrences to activities planned, her mind wondered. The minutes seemed long, but before even 2 minutes had passed, her mind was back into concentration as those thought went back to place. Her schedule seemed so stressful, but she just called them normal. The usual mundane tasks.” Tiffany finished the paragraph with a slight longing. She looks up hoping it was close enough for no one to notice, but was deeply disappointed to see the confused faces. “Tiffany, I know this crazy unlike story seems to lack our views in some ways, but this does not give you the right to-””-royally screw up!” The students laughed with their loudest voices and another explosion rang in the other building. Everyone ignored the explosion and seemed so concentrated on the humor of the situation. Tiffany looked down in embarrassment. “It’s not my fault that the words change.” She mumbled in her defense. “How can someone without an ability not see the words in front of her.” The classmate with very good hearing laughs. He would be the only one who heard her when she desperately hoped no one did. “Class! Calm down!” The teacher’s aura seemed to fill everyone with dread as they all calmed down hoping the darkness creeping in disappeared. It also had stopped someone outside the window from flying upwards and fell to the grown with a big crack. “Now, everyone here has an ability. Even Tiffany. She doesn’t want to show it and that’s okay. That means that no one can say anything against her reading differently than actually written since her ability is still unknown. Am I right?” Her gaze was on longed-eared Jonny. Jonny nodded and seemed to shrivel in his seat. “I’m glad that everyone has noticed. Now tiffany, this isn’t the first time this has happened and I am sure that it will happen again. Would you like to explain to everyone why you cannot read what is written?” Tiffany wanted to shrivel in her seat too. She did not want her ability told, but she also didn’t want to be embarrassed again. She grabbed the textbook and puts it up so the cover stared at the classmates and her head was hidden in the pages. She took it as a means of protection from something she could not protect from. “Umm. The words of the book will sometimes change. I cannot control it and sometimes the story gets very distorted. It makes reading a bit more interesting since the thought of the characters seemed so important. I don’t know why it will change, but from what I have seen. The story changes to the actual thought the character would think at the moment. The words that I read are the actual words that occur like it was actually happening.” “Like a form of dimension traveling?” The words make her jump. If they figure it out, what would she do? She didn’t want them to figure it out as much as it tormented her. A feeling of longing and jealousy came over her like many times before. She wanted the world these characters were from. A world where this much danger and adventure was forbidden almost. Where she did not have to fear being hunted down the minute her ability was clear. But she can’t keep hiding, right? She had to stand behind her own power, because this was her world, right? Maybe just maybe. This time something will change. “Kind of. A dimension who is very aware of us, but we aren’t of them.” The air stagnated. They seemed all in deep thought when most of them would not be able to be in such deep thinking. “That’s kinda creepy.” One muttered. The others agreed and seemed to come to an understanding of Tiffany’s ability even if this was such a small part of it. Another was going to ask something about it when a guy burst into the room with a grenade in hand. Tiffany sighed and ducked under the table as the grenade explodes and the guy falls. The teacher is right there to bring things back into order which already seemed clear in the air. “Okay. That’s enough ability talking. Why don’t we continue this in your P.E class and continue reading?” Tiffany sat in her chair again to only find the textbook scorched. She sighs and throws the text book to the floor as the person in back of her passes a new one from the pile in the back. They continue reading, this time only asking Tiffany to read when thoughts were visibly present.
