chapter 1 Rotten Bones
Blarrrnnnn! I shrieked and jumped from the sudden deafening honk that almost destroyed my ear drums. “Hahahahaha, scaredy cat”, I heard amidst the chuckles that was coming from behind me. The bewilderment on my face slowly turned to anger and then rage as I fully comprehended what just happened. “Pfft.” I muttered in disgust. What more to expect from the street bullies. I picked up my pace and hurriedly walked away from the scene. My name is Mia Sunderlands, and I’m a college student at the University of Ohio. I’m studying journalism, and I live in Athens. The guys who just pranked me, and I’m still vexed with at the moment are the street thugs that call themselves the “Rotten bones”. Rumors have it that they were part of a gang that robbed, others were of the opinion that they were being sponsored by a drug lord, because how else would guys so young be able to afford such an expensive car… and to think that they drive it so roughly!!! If I had such an adorable baby, I’d take care of it like it were a real baby. Of course I love cars, and who really cares about some unruly guys with a weird gang name, I thought to myself, as I pulled out my earphones from my bag. Brought out my phone and connected, then I decided to play runaway by aurora. I was about putting my device back when I felt a hand cover my eyes from behind. I hated pranks like this because they made me vulnerable. I didn’t make any quick moves so as not to give the impression that I was afraid. For all I knew, it could be one of those touts taking their pranks one step further. I asked softly, with the most gently voice I could muster, “Who is that?”, then came a soft laugh, which sounded feminine, and the person muttered slowly, with an attempt to make their voice sound much more thick, “Make a guess”. “Mira”, I said, sounding unsure. “Lol”, Mira replied, as her hands swiftly crept off my face. “Heyy girl,” I said, almost shouting. Mira was my best friend, and more likely the only friend I had in school. We were in the same department, although she is more brilliant than I am. “Where are you rushing off to so early, classes ended like 40 minutes ago… and you didn’t even wait for me.” Sometimes I just wondered how this whining lady walking beside me managed to come out with straight As… it was like she had an entirely different personality, in and after class. “Awwww… sorry Mira, I couldn’t find you immediately after class, and I couldn’t wait too as I got a call from my uncle that I should be home as quickly as I could. It sounded quite urgent, that’s why I couldn’t hang around to look for you. You know I’ll never leave you on purpose…” I muttered slowly, while making a cute face. “Forgive me, I’ll make it up to you.” “You’d better.” She uttered, with a mouthful of sandwhich in her mouth. We chatted while walking down the road, moving from one topic to another. I got to my junction, and we parted ways. I turned the door knob, and entered into my house, heading for my room to take a shower before seeing my uncle. The house belonged to my parents, who were now late. My uncle moved in when they died, to take care of me, although I always thought it was because he didn’t really have a place to stay. Well, that was 14 years ago, and I was 7 years old then. I barely remembered what they both looked like, as my memory was becoming foggy. Of course pictures of them were hung on the walls about, but I didn’t really remember any endearing moments with them. I switched on the shower, letting the warmness of the water caress my skin. I didn’t like the fact that I didn’t totally grow up with my parents, but there was nothing I could do about it... Plus my uncle always tried his best to look out for me, and cater for my needs, sometimes even working up to 4 jobs just to make ends meet. I learnt not to dwell on the past, and I’m grateful for what I had. “Hmmmm…” I groaned as the water took its course through my body, flowing from my hair, through my breasts and to my lower body, leaving a tingle of warmth and satisfaction as it went by. I brought my hands upward, caressing my skin. I quickly got of the shower, when I noticed I had spent more time than expected, and I still had to get to my uncle. I took out my purple towel from the rack, wiping off the water from my body with it. I paid special attention to my face, my breasts and legs. Tying the towel around my body when I was done, I got out of the bathroom and into my room to get something to put on. I wasn’t going out again today, so I didn’t see the need to put on a bra. My eye caught a T-shirt that had a picture of Barbie on it, and I decided to put it on. Not like I cared what I wore anyways… I had always had a tough time deciding what to put on, and I just stopped caring altogether. I made for my bumshots which was across my bed and put it on too. After applying some face cream, I walked out of the room to go see my uncle.
