The Offer
Rain poured heavily outside the hospital, blurring the city lights into a dull haze. Lina stood silently in the hallway, clutching a stack of unpaid medical bills in her trembling hands.
The numbers on the paper felt unreal.
$48,720.
Her father's surgery, medication, and hospital stay had drained every cent their family had. Their small house was already mortgaged, and the bank had begun sending warning letters.
She inhaled slowly, trying to steady herself.
"Miss Lina?"
A nurse approached her gently.
"The doctor would like to speak with you."
Her heart tightened. Lina nodded and followed the nurse into the consultation room.
The doctor sat behind his desk, his expression serious but calm.
"Your father's condition is stable for now," he began. "But he will need another procedure within the next two weeks. Without it, his recovery may be at risk."
Lina felt the floor shift beneath her.
"How much will it cost?" she asked quietly.
The doctor paused before answering.
"Approximately twenty-five thousand dollars."
The words struck her like a physical blow.
Twenty-five thousand.
She barely earned enough to cover their monthly expenses. Even working overtime every day, it would take years to gather that kind of money.
Her throat tightened.
"I understand," she whispered, forcing herself to remain composed. "Thank you, doctor."
She left the room in a daze.
The hallway felt colder than before. Families passed by, talking softly, holding flowers, praying, hoping.
Lina leaned against the wall, closing her eyes.
What am I supposed to do now?
Her phone vibrated in her pocket.
She pulled it out and stared at the screen.
Unknown Number
For a moment, she hesitated. Then she answered.
"Hello?"
A deep, calm male voice responded.
"Miss Lina Hartono."
Her body stiffened.
"Yes… who is this?"
"This is Adrian Walker."
The name hit her instantly.
Her boss.
The CEO of Walker Group.
Her hands began to sweat.
"Sir?" she said nervously. "Is there something you need?"
"I need to speak with you," he replied. His tone was firm, leaving no room for argument. "Meet me at my office tomorrow morning. Eight o'clock sharp."
Her mind raced.
"Of course, sir."
The call ended.
Lina lowered the phone slowly, her heart beating faster than before.
Why would the CEO call her directly?
Employees like her rarely interacted with him. He was known throughout the company as a cold, distant man who trusted numbers more than people.
A sudden thought crossed her mind.
Did I make a mistake at work?
The next morning arrived too quickly.
Lina stood in front of the towering glass building of Walker Group, staring up at the company's logo near the top floor.
Her palms felt damp.
She had barely slept.
Taking a deep breath, she walked inside.
The lobby was silent and elegant, filled with polished marble floors and expensive artwork. Everything about the building screamed power and wealth.
A receptionist greeted her politely.
"Good morning. How may I help you?"
"I have a meeting with Mr. Walker," Lina replied.
The receptionist checked her computer, then nodded.
"Please take the elevator to the 30th floor. His assistant is expecting you."
Thirty floors.
Her heart pounded as the elevator doors closed.
Each second felt longer than the last.
When the doors finally opened, a tall woman in a black suit greeted her.
"Miss Lina, please come this way."
She led Lina down a quiet corridor toward a large wooden door.
The assistant knocked once before opening it.
"Mr. Walker, Miss Lina is here."
"Send her in."
The voice was calm, deep, and commanding.
Lina stepped inside.
The office was enormous, with floor-to-ceiling windows overlooking the city skyline. Sunlight streamed across the room, illuminating a man seated behind a sleek black desk.
Adrian Walker.
He looked exactly as people described him.
Tall. Imposing. Perfectly dressed.
His dark eyes lifted to meet hers.
For a moment, neither of them spoke.
Then he gestured toward the chair in front of him.
"Sit."
She obeyed immediately, trying to control her breathing.
Adrian studied her silently, as if analyzing every detail.
Finally, he spoke.
"I heard about your father's condition."
Her eyes widened in surprise.
"Sir…?"
"I also know about your family's financial situation," he continued calmly. "The hospital bills. The mortgage. The debt."
A chill ran down her spine.
How did he know all of this?
She swallowed hard.
"Yes, sir," she admitted quietly.
He leaned back in his chair, his expression unreadable.
"I have a proposal for you."
Her pulse quickened.
"A proposal?"
He nodded once.
"I will pay all of your family's medical expenses," he said. "Every dollar."
Her breath caught.
It sounded impossible.
Too good to be true.
"What… what do you want in return?" she asked carefully.
A faint, almost unreadable smile appeared on his lips.
His next words changed her life forever.
"Marry me."
