Chapter 9

1025 Words
Lily sat in the living room, waiting for Logan to come home. She had been waiting for hours, and the clock on the wall read well past midnight. Finally, she heard the sound of the front door opening, and Logan walked in. But he didn't look like himself. His eyes were red and puffy, and tears streamed down his face. Lily's heart skipped a beat as she took in Logan's distraught expression. She quickly got up from the couch and approached him. "Sir, what's wrong?" she asked, concern etched on her face. But Logan didn't respond. He just walked past her, his eyes fixed on the floor, and headed to his room. Lily followed him, trying to get his attention. "Sir, you should come and eat your dinner. You must be hungry." But Logan just shook his head, his voice barely above a whisper. "I'm not hungry. I just can't do anything again tonight." Lily's concern deepened as she watched Logan walk into his room and shut the door behind him. She knew that something was wrong, and she couldn't shake off the feeling that Logan was hiding something from her. Logan's phone rang the next day, shrill in the early morning silence. He groggily reached over to his bedside table and picked up the phone. "Hello?" he mumbled. "Good morning, Logan," his mother's voice chimed in. "I hope I'm not waking you up too early." Logan rubbed his eyes, trying to shake off the sleep. "Mom, good morning. How are you?" "I'm fine, dear. But I need to talk to you about something. I've been thinking, and I've decided that Charlotte will be coming to stay with you for a while." Logan's eyes snapped open, and he sat up in bed. "What? Mom, are you joking?" His mother's voice was firm. "I'm not joking, Logan. You need to get used to Charlotte, because you're going to be marrying her soon." Logan's face twisted in frustration. "Mom, how can you even...? You're not making any sense." But his mother just kept talking. "I know you think you can fool me, Logan, but I know all about your little game. You think you can just pretend to be in love with that...that...girl, but I won't let you. You're going to marry Charlotte, and that's final." Logan's anger boiled over. "Mom, how can you be so...so...cruel? You're always talking about how much you care about me, but you never listen to what I want." His mother's voice was cold. "I don't care about your feelings, Logan. I care about what's best for this family, and marrying Charlotte is what's best." Logan's face was red with anger. "Mom, I have a question to ask you." "What is it?" his mother asked curtly. Logan's voice was icy. "When last did you visit Dad?" Logan's mother paused, taken aback by the question. "What does that have to do with anything, Logan?" she asked, her voice hesitant. Logan's tone was bitter. "Just answer the question, Mom. When last did you visit Dad?" There was a long silence on the other end of the line. Finally, Logan's mother spoke up. "I...I don't see why this is relevant, Logan." Logan's voice was cold. "Just tell me, Mom. When last did you visit Dad?" His mother sighed. "Fine. I haven't visited your father in months, okay? Are you happy now?" Logan's tone was icy. "I'm not happy, Mom. I'm just sad. Sad that you're more concerned with marrying me off to some woman I don't love than with taking care of your own husband." His mother's voice was angry. "How dare you, Logan! You have no right to talk to me like that!" Logan's voice was firm. "I have every right, Mom. And I'm telling you now: I will never marry Charlotte. And I don't want her to come visit me. You can tell her not to come.". Logan's voice was firm. "Mom, tell Charlotte not to come. It's better that way. I don't want her to even try coming at all." His mother's voice was angry. "You are not the one to decide that, Logan. You will do as I say, and that's final." Logan's tone was defiant. "I'm telling you, Mom, I won't marry Charlotte. And I don't want her in my house." "Listen, Logan, if you try anything funny, I promise you that you will regret it. And as for that maid, Lily or whatever her name is, remember I hired her. I will have her sacked if you don't behave." Logan's face twisted in anger. "You can't threaten me, Mom. I'm not a child anymore." His mother's voice was cold. "We'll see about that. You just wait and see." With that, she hung up the phone, leaving Logan feeling angry and frustrated. When Lily served Logan breakfast and was about to leave when he called her back."Lily, I need to talk to you about something." Lily's voice was cautious. "What is it, sir?" "I know you refused to go along with the plan. But I'm telling you, Lily, it's the only way. We have to pretend to be in a relationship if I want to get out of this situation." Lily's voice was firm. "I'm sorry, sir. But I can never agree to that. I'm not going to pretend to be something I'm not." Logan's voice was frustrated. "This isn't about being sorry or not , Lily. The situation is getting out of hand. And I told you, you're the only person who can help me out of this mess." Lily's voice was resolute. "I'm not going to help you by pretending to be your girlfriend, sir.. I'm sorry." Logan's voice was desperate. "Just agree to the plan, Lily. Please. It can work, I assure you. And I'm facing serious problems too. I don't have the luxury of making things worse." Lily's voice was firm but polite. "I'm sorry, sir. But I think it's better if we don't discuss this matter again." Logan's voice was disappointed, but he knew he couldn't push Lily any further. "Fine, Lily. If that's how you feel. Bye." Lily's voice was soft. "Bye, sir. Bye."
