Chapter Six

Kayla I stood frozen, my hand tightening around the fabric. Did I hear him wrong? Did he really say that? I turned around, and his brown eyes met mine, their intensity piercing through me. “What did you just say?” I asked, hoping for a different answer this time. There was no way he meant what I thought he did. “Teach me how to live like you. A normal life.” He repeated the words not missing out any. “Why?” Why will the Alpha king only son want to live a life of an omega?” “If that’s what it takes to have you, then I can deal with it,” I stared at him stunned. Confusion tangled with disbelief in my chest. Why was he so determined to claim me? What was I missing? Unless…..there was more he wasn’t saying. Was I even his mate? I clenched my fists at my sides, frustration simmering beneath my skin. Goddess, if only I had a wolf. Maybe then, I could make sense of all this. “I don’t know what you’re up to or what you really want from me but I don’t have time for this right now,” I said, turning on my heel before he could answer. “Kayla!” His voice stopped me mid-step. I didn’t turn around. “I need to get back to my dorm,” I said quietly. “I have work to do. Can we…talk about this later?” I didn’t wait for a reply. Deep down, I knew there is no ‘later.’ And that’s exactly what I wanted. To get away. As far from him as I could. He gave a silent nod, and I turned, heading back to the room I had come from to change. Once I was done, I made my way downstairs. Prince Leonard was right where I had left him—seated on the couch, typing something on his phone calmly. “I should get going,” I said flatly walking towards the door. But before I could reach it, his hand closed around my wrist. He stood up, towering over me, his presence suddenly overwhelming. His aura was intimidating, dominant, commanding and impossible to ignore. “You can’t run from me, Kayla,” he murmured. “I just want you to know that. And when I want something…I get it.” The weight in his tone left no room for doubt. He meant every word. I swallowed the bile rising in my throat, and before I could say a word, the door opened and a young lady stepped inside. Princess Ruby, Prince Leonard’s sister. Her brows furrowed as her gaze dropped to Prince Leonard’s hand still wrapped around mine to the position we are in—far too close. That’s when I realized how little space was left between us. Before she could get the wrong idea, I yanked my hand free and took a few quick steps back, putting much needed distance between us. She walked in fully, her eyes never once leaving me. Her stare was sharp enough to make my skin prickle, and suddenly, I became conscious of my body, my weight, every flaw I couldn't hide. She was stunning. Her long, black hair spilled in glossy waves down to her waist, and her manicure nails gleamed like a polished glass. Everything about her scent, her posture, radiated wealth and effortless confidence. “Who are you?” she asked at last, her voice clipped, her eyes still raking over me like I was something under a microscope. I parted my lips to answer, but Prince Leonard spoke first. “She’s my guest.” Her frown deepened, her gaze snapping to her brother. The disbelief in her eyes was obvious, like she couldn’t quite believe he’d just called an omega his guest. It wasn’t hard for people to tell what I was. Omegas carried a scent—sharp, earthy and pungent. Her gaze narrowed. “You dress….How did you get that—“ She didn’t get to finish. Prince Leonard reached out and clamped a hand gently but firmly over her mouth, cutting her off mid-sentence. The princess looked confused and honestly, so was I. Why the hell was he covering his sister’s mouth to stop her from talking to me? Was he trying to protect me? Because the dress wasn’t mine? “You can go, Kayla. My driver is waiting outside to take you back to your dorm,” Prince Leonard said, then turned and led his reluctant sister away. I waited until they disappeared from view before bolting out of the house. Just as he had said, a black Lamborghini was parked outside with the driver waiting. But there was no way in hell I was letting myself be seen in luxury car, especially not his. Not with his name on the license plate. I offered the driver a polite smile. “Can you just give me the directions to get back to school?” He hesitated, clearly torn. “But Prince Leonard specifically asked——“ “I will walk,” I said bluntly. “Please. Just the direction.” After a long moment and a lot of back and forth, he finally sighed and gave in. I thanked him, memorized the directions, and made my way back on foot. Away from that house, and away from him. ———————- When I got to my dorm, I found Sadie pacing back and forth across the room. She didn’t notice me at first. Her brows were furrowed, and she kept gnawing at her thumbnail, her eyes flicking toward the clock every few seconds. “Sadie,” I called softly. Her head snapped up, and relief flooded her features. In an instant, she rushed over and pulled me into a tight hug. We stayed like that for a moment, her arms wrapped around me like she was afraid I might vanish. Then she finally let go. “I’m sorry about Aiden,” she said gently. I didn’t ask how she knew. I didn’t have to. If Sadie knew, the whole school probably did. Emily wouldn’t stop until everyone had heard how Aiden dumped me just to make a point. Just to remind me where I belonged. “It’s okay Sadie. I’m over him already,” I murmured, forcing the words past the hollow ache in my chest. “I swear, if I had known he was a b***h, I would have never let you date him.” Sadie snapped, her voice sharp with anger. I let out a weak chuckle. “b***h suit him perfectly.” Dragging myself to the bed, I collapsed onto it with a sigh. Sadie climbed up beside me, her legs crossed with concern still written all over her face. “I looked everywhere for you last night after I heard about Aiden and Emily,” she said. “You just disappeared. I have been in your dorm since early this morning waiting, but you never came back. Where did you go?” I hesitated. Sadie’s eyes narrowed. “Kayla Brown! Don’t tell me you did something stupid because of that piece of shit.” I quickly shook my head. “Then spill.” I cleared my throat, nerves coiling in my stomach as I searched for the right words, anything that wouldn’t send Sadie into full panic mode. She hated Prince Leonard as much as I did. Maybe even more. “I was with prince Leonard last night,” I said quietly. “What?” Her voice rose instantly. “Prince Leonard Hale?” Exactly the reaction I expected shock, disbelief, and a brewing storm of fury flashing across her face like she was ready to hunt him down. “Don’t tell me he took advantage of you,” she snapped, practically shouting now. “No! That’s not what happened.” “Then what?” I hesitated, dread pressing heavily on my chest as I fiddled with the hem of my dress. “Kayla!” “He’s my mate, Sadie,” I whispered. “My fated mate.” Sadie’s mouth fell open, her eyes wide and frozen in place as if the words had physically knocked the air out of her.
