Chapter one
Chapter One
Kayla.
“It’s just a party, Kayla, you can do this,” I whispered to my reflection in the mirror, trying to calm my wrecked nerves.
My anxiety spiked as I thought about Aiden’s birthday party tonight. As an omega raised by a single mother and attending Dark Shadow Academy on scholarship, I had always felt out of place among high society gatherings like this. But Aiden, my boyfriend and the future Alpha of Iron Crest pack, expects my presence especially since he would be announcing our relationship to the entire school.
My stomach twisted with uncertainty as I anticipated the announcement. I knew one thing for sure, the news wouldn’t sit well with many students and our pack members. Aiden is not only the future Alpha but also the ultimate catch, desired by females in our pack and school. Still, Aiden chose me and promised to stand by my side, no matter what.
The door cracked open, and my best friend Sadie walked in, her face twisted in disapproval as she took in my outfit. I, in turn, checked my dress but it seemed perfectly fine to me.
“Seriously? This is what you’re wearing to your boyfriend’s birthday party, where most students will be present?”
“What’s wrong with my dress? It looks perfect for someone of my size. I do not see the need for something else,” I said defensively.
My weight has always been a challenge, but I’m not too fat, nor am I slim as a regular girl my age should be, but regardless I’m comfortable in my own body.
“The dress isn’t giving the right impression. I mean, you’re Aiden’s girlfriend, you should give off a certain vibe so people won’t ridicule you…” she plopped down on my bed, wagging a finger towards my face. “Those glasses aren’t helping either, they clash with the whole outfit.”
“But I can’t see clearly without my glasses on,” I argued. Yes, I had a problem with my vision too, and since we are too poor to afford surgery I ended up using glasses.
Sadie gave me a knowing look and slipped her hand into her blazer pocket, pulling out a small container of contact lenses. I instantly shook my head.
“Absolutely not, I’m not wearing those.”
“Why not?”
“Because they itch so badly, and I don’t want to spend my entire evening rubbing my eyes and feeling miserable.”
Sadie sighed in disbelief but didn’t press me further, she knew I wouldn’t wear the contact lenses after what they did to me last time. I guess she was just trying her luck.
“Fine, but can you at least try on a different dress? I brought you something else,” she said with a smile, rummaging through the backpack I hadn’t even noticed until now. A moment later she pulled out a stunning blue dress.
The dress is a vibrant floral blue with delicate white patterns embroidered along the hem and neckline.
“Where did you get that from, Sadie? It looks super expensive.”
“And elegant, right? I borrowed it from my mom’s store. Just put it on.”
I raised an eyebrow, knowing Sadie’s mom runs a dry-cleaning service and suspecting the dress might not be exactly “borrowed.”
“What if the owner sees me in her dress?”
“That won’t happen. Put it on, I bet you will look beautiful.”
I hesitated for a moment, then took the dress from Sadie.
“Fine, but if I get caught in someone else's dress, I'm blaming you,” I warned, heading to change.
Sadie beamed with encouragement as I slipped into the dress, the soft fabric caressing my skin like silk. I caught a glimpse of myself in the mirror and did a double take, surprised by how the dress brought out the vibrant hue of my eyes. The transformation was beautiful, and for a moment, I felt like a different person.
When I emerge, Sadie's face lights up. “You look stunning!” she exclaimed. “Aiden's going to love it.” I felt a flutter in my chest at the thought.
“Sit down and let me fix you up with some makeup.”

The club where the party was taking place was packed and looked amazing, a dazzling spectacle that took my breath away. Warm, golden light bathed the room, with twinkling string lights suspended from the ceiling like a constellation of stars.
The scent of perfume, cologne, and brewed cocktails wafted through the air, teasing my senses and heightening my self-consciousness.
I was glad Sadie talked me into wearing this dress—everyone here looks like they had just stepped out of a designer store. The party was filled with Sophisticated nepo babies, future Alphas, Lunas, Betas, and Gammas. I felt a little out of place, but Sadie gave my hand a reassuring squeeze.
If I hadn’t been dating Aiden, I doubted I would have ever set foot in a place like this. At least Sadie, as the gamma’s daughter, was no stranger to high-society events like this.
“Relax! They’re werewolves like you, just with different status. Blend in and you will be good.” Sadie said after noticing how stiff I was. She has always been an outgoing person and loves to put herself out there, unlike me, who never felt like I belonged anywhere except for my dorm room.
“I wish I could,” I sighed.
“Why don't you go find your boyfriend? I'll be over there with some of my friends,” she suggested, and I nodded.
I wish I had friends like Sadie did, but most people don't relate to omegas like me. Many condemn Sadie for being my friend, yet she's always been a loyal defender, standing up for me whenever I'm talked about in a condescending manner.
I walked further into the club, my eyes scanning the crowd for Aiden, but he was nowhere to be found. “Where could he be?” I muttered to myself, my eyes still searching for him. Instead, my gaze landed on three groups of guys everyone knew too well on campus in the VIP section.
The future king of the Dark Shadow pack, his Beta, and his Gamma. Everyone at school knew them. Wild, reckless, untouchable. Prince Leonard was the worst. He's impossibly handsome like a fallen angel or a Greek God. A walking scandal. Rich beyond reason. Girls threw themselves at him and he used them like disposable toys.
I was about to tear my eyes away when his eyes met mine. I quickly looked away, my cheek burning.
What an asshole.
I quickly made my way through the crowd, still searching for Aiden, and then I saw him. He was walking toward a dark corner outside the club. I wanted to yell his name, but I figured it wouldn’t make sense to start shouting since he wouldn’t hear me anyway. I smiled to myself and followed his path.
It was so dark that I had to strain my eyes, desperate to see more than a few feet in front of me. Just as I was about to call out for Aiden, I heard faint moans, and my stomach twisted in disgust.
‘Who does this kind of thing in public? Can they wait until they are somewhere private?’
I put on my phone flashlight, and my world freezes. My heart sank like a stone, and my vision blurred. Aiden is wrapped in another woman's arms, his sister's best friend, the one he had sworn was nothing to worry about. The same lips that had kissed mine are now pressed against hers. The same hands that had held me are now exploring her body.
I stumble backward, my eyes fixed on the scene before me. I feel like I'm watching a nightmare unfold, unable to wake up. And then, our eyes meet. Aiden's gaze locked with mine, but I didn’t see remorse, guilt, or even shock. Instead, he smirked. My heart shattered into a million pieces as I stood there, frozen in agony.
