Kayla
“Aiden!” I whispered, shock rendering me almost speechless. “How could you?”
Tears pooled in my eyes, my hand clenched and my chest tightened in pain. I waited for an explanation that might justify or explain his actions, but instead, he stood there staring at me with a smug look on his face, as if he had been waiting for this moment.
“Finally,” Emily scoffed, a mischievous glint in her eyes as a sly smirk displayed on her red-painted lip.
“Finally?” I spat out the words, my voice heavy with disbelief.
Emily nodded and leaned into Aiden, her perfectly manicured nails trailing down his chest like she was marking her territory. “Yeah, you finally caught on,” she said in a condescending tone.
I glanced at Aiden, expecting him to intervene or explain what she meant, but he just stood there, arm crossed, and a smirk stretching his lips.
He really smirked.
“You won’t say anything?” I demanded.
“Do I have to?” he replied nonchalantly as if he hadn't done anything wrong. “You're wearing your glasses, so I'm sure you saw what just happened. Why do I need to spell it out?”
“You cheated on me,” I choked out, “I just caught you with Emily. I thought you loved me.”
Emily's laughter was like a slap in the face. “So stupid, you actually believed he loved you,” she grinned with a razor-sharp smile. “You're not just pathetic, Kayla. You are a joke, a mere pawn in Aiden's game to pass that pathetic Alpha test his father and elders threw at him.”
Her words crushed me like a ton of bricks. I felt shattered and used.
“Aiden, is she telling the truth?” I asked, my shaky voice barely audible, the doubt and hurt show in every syllable.
I should have seen it coming, he was using me all along. But my feelings for him blinded me to the truth. He would only reach out when he needed something, assigning me tasks like a project, never investing in us. His focus was on passing his father's test, making his dad proud. Meanwhile, I poured my heart and soul into solving the riddle, sacrificing sleep and watching my grades slip, all for his benefit.
“You use me!”
“Use you?” Aiden's laughter was mocking, like I was the punchline to a joke. “You really think you're that important? You're just a worthless omega, born by a woman who's nothing but a slut. You're overweight, ugly, and delusional if you think you're fit for someone like me.”
Emily giggled, a self-satisfied smirk plastered on her face as she clung possessively to him, and Aiden wrapped his arm around her like she was something fragile and precious.
“It's hilarious that nobody like you would even dream of being with someone of my status.” He continued in disgust. “Look around you Kayla omega are nothing but slaves and you serve your purpose.”
If I thought Emily's words hurt, Aiden's lit my self-esteem on fire, torching the fragile confidence I had spent years building. I felt lower than ever, my body melting with shame.
“My mother had nothing to do with this, so don’t speak ill of her,” I managed to say, my voice trembling. “You’re the one who said you wanted me by your side as your Luna—that I was doing it all for our future. Hypocrisy suits you.”
“You actually think I'd choose you over others who are far superior to you? True Alpha blood versus the blood of a lowly slave like yours,” His voice filled with so much disdain. “You are a real joke.”
Emily stepped forward, her dress hugging her every curve. “You hear that, slave? Someone like you has no right to dream big. You’re nothing and you belong in the trash. Now do us all a favor and get out of here. You don’t belong at this party.”
Shamefully, I walked out of their presence with a shattered heart. Aiden hadn’t just broken my heart, he ruined me. I thought what we had was real, that he truly loved me and would make me his Luna. I thought I'd finally have a perfect life like every other student, but it's just a dream that will never come true.
My tears had already ruined my glasses, and everything was a blur. I let out a bitter laugh at myself, wondering if Emily was right. Maybe I had dreamed too big for an omega like me, someone whose mother worked as a cleaner at this very school. Maybe I had hoped for too much, given where I came from. Maybe Aiden was right. Maybe I didn't deserve him.
I removed my glasses and tried to clean them with the hem of my dress, but I accidentally bumped into the wall. My glasses slipped from my hand and hit the floor. I let out a shaky breath as tears streamed down my face, then dropped to my knees to search for it. Once I found it, I would leave, I had to. I couldn’t stay here any longer.
I scrambled around, getting more and more desperate, but my glasses were nowhere to be found. I burst into tears again, collapsing onto the floor and wrapping my arms around my knees wishing Sadie was here.
But then, out of nowhere, this presence loomed over me. I couldn't make out their features, but the air around them screamed “wealth” and he smelled really delicious like one of the werewolf elite.
“Searching for this?” The voice was quiet and sweet, like music to my ears after all the hurtful words.
"My glasses, yes!" I murmured, stretching out my hand hopefully. But instead of handing them over, the presence stepped closer, and my glasses were gently placed on my face and when my vision cleared, I finally saw the owner of the sweet melodic voice.
Prince Leonard Hale stood before me.
A slow, almost dangerous smile on his lips.
Like I was his next victim.
What the hell.
