Mine

Killian stared at his hands as the clock on the wall ticked loudly, the sound echoing around the room. It was harder than he thought it would be— not being near her. He’d been told about the mate bond his entire life— seen it himself a few times— but he’s severely underestimated the pull the bond had. He was seconds away from leveling the building to get to her and see if she was alright. He shouldn’t care. She was a means to an end— but his entire body thrummed with a need to shield her fragile frame from the other wolves here. To protect her from them. He knew what happened at the claim behind closed doors. She-wolves were assaulted, beaten, and oftentimes, even r***d. They’d put too many feral, unmated male wolves in the same area, every nose trained on the same few scents of females. It was bound to turn volatile. And now— one of them belonged to him. He’d been told from the time he was a boy that he was evil— his black soul cursed to never bear a mate. He’d believed it, and it had suited him just fine. But then, the angel herself had walked through the door— and all of his carefully thought out plans were changing at warp speed. He’d almost think it was a ruse if he hadn’t smelled her himself. His mother saw to it that he’d never be mated when— Killian shook his head. Things were different now. Before he’d had time to think, he’d said that the mate bond between them changed nothing. He’d still treat her as a prisoner. But he knew he couldn’t. She was a gift he thought— he was told— the goddess would never bestow upon him. Yet here she was.. in the flesh. Christian strolled into the room, his arm snapping backwards as he angrily launched his cell phone into the wall. His nostrils flared. “I can’t believe that old f**k. Refusing to remove her from the claim. She’s the rightful Luna of Blood Moon.” “And I’m assuming, due to the fact that you are here and not where I ordered you to be, that she is safely in her dormitory?” Killian challenged. Christian nodded. “Snug and secure. Not that it matters. She won’t ever really be safe here, Killian. We should take her and leave.” Killian sighed. “And what then? My peace with the counsel is barely hanging on, Beta. It won’t remain if I interfere with The Claim. I’m not afraid of war, but I am afraid of her being in the center of it.” Christian paused, staring at Killian, his eyes shining with recognition. “You fear for her.” Killian’s first instinct was to deny it vehemently. He’d never shown a weakness, not in all his years of life. Christian was the only one who knew of the curse his mother bestowed upon him— everyone else simply thought he had the idea of mate bonds. And he had— because it reminded him of the one thing he thought he would never have. As much as he wanted to deny it, he couldn’t. “She will select her opponent for the first spar tomorrow.” He said instead. “She’s going to pick Thorn. She hates you. Mate bond or not— she won’t want you to see her weaknesses in the arena.” “She doesn’t strike me as a female that runs from a challenge, Christian.” Christian’s eyes darted to his face. “You think she’ll pick you?” Killian propped his boots up on the desk, running a hand across his face. “Do you know much of the Silver Moon pack? They have some of the fiercest and bravest warriors on the continent. Alpha Conri breeds strength in adversity, integrity, and bravery amongst his people. They face enemies head on. I expect no less from his daughter. She carries herself as a fearless queen.” Christian nodded. “And if she does pick Thorn? What then?” “We’re going to hope I don’t get a hankering for mass murder.” “You’d be justified if you did. The counsel has lost their way. Never thought I’d see a day when a mate bond secured by the goddess was devalued.” “Make no mistake,” Killian assured him, a dark look in his eyes. “I will be leaving the arena with her. They will not deny me what is mine.” Christian smirked. “I’d expect no less.”
