Chapter-1
Jessica's ears had not stopped ringing for the past three hours, the tears had stopped but she just couldn't hear anything else. Luke had not shown up. She could hear her mother walking in and out of her room, sobbing quietly as she spoke over the phone to her sister who couldn't make it to the wedding because she was heavily pregnant. "Yes, Sarah. She hasn't spoken a word since we left the church. I can't believe Luke did this" Jessica couldn't believe it either, they had both been in love for over seven years, and they were high school sweethearts. How could he not show up for the wedding? Jessica turned to the mirror in her room, trying to figure out where exactly everything had gone wrong. They had spoken on the phone late into the night the previous day, both excited to get married. Had she imagined it? Her best friend bursts into the room, eyes red and hands held out to Jessica. "I'm so sorry, Jess. I had to cancel the reception plans. I'm here now, sweetie" Jessica burst into tears as her best friend held her close, the shame drowning her. "Hh-h-how could he do this to me, Beth? After everything we've been through, was it all in my head?" "What? No. It wasn't in your head, Jess. We all saw how you both looked at each other. It was love." "Love? This isn't love. He stood me up at the altar, with no explanation. He knew what he was doing." "Please Jess, you have to take it easy. I can imagine how hard everything is for now but please take it easy." "I just don't get it. We were good up until late last night. We were both excited to get married so what changed?" Beth watched helplessly as her best friend broke down. There was not much she could do but pray that Luke had better have a great explanation for this. On the other side of town, Henry is having the worst day of his life. "Of all days to break down, you choose today? And of all places, you break down in this local town? You've got to be kidding." Henry shakes his head, frustrated. He looks up and sees a coffee shop a few feet away. He grabs his briefcase and decides to head into the shop, hoping to get away from the heat. He enters and quickly finds a seat further from the door, hoping to get privacy as he places a call to his secretary. "Mr Ford?" "Yes, Steve. I need you to reach out to the Greene brothers, I won't be meeting them for dinner anymore. My car broke down and I don't think I can fix it here. Also, order me an express car and let me know how soon it can get here." "Right away sir." Henry hangs up immediately and starts to work on his laptop but he is distracted by the chatter coming from the table behind him. "Poor her, getting stood up at the altar is not something that can be easily forgotten" "Oh please, I always had a feeling they wouldn't work out. He was too good for her, high school sweethearts or not." Henry shook his head at the gossip, he hated small towns. He held up a hand to the woman at the counter and ordered iced coffee. After another thirty minutes of struggling to work without any luck, he stands up, glares at the old women at the table, and stomps to the counter. "Hello, is there any motel around here where I could spend the night?" The woman smiled brightly at him. "I knew you were new in town, I know everyone around here. Well, there's a new hotel around the corner, it should do." Henry thanks her and walks out of the shop. Jessica stares at the phone in her hand, reading the text over and over again. 'I couldn't do it, Jessica. I couldn't pretend anymore, I am sorry for not showing up but I couldn't when my heart belongs to another woman. I have taken the job in New York as planned but I have left town with the woman I want to spend the rest of my life with. Do not call me.' Beth snatches the phone away from her hand and drags her to the bathroom, deciding she has had enough. "Beth? What are you doing?" "I'm running you a bath and we are going to dress up, go to the new club, and get drunk. I've had enough of you staring at the same text over and over again, Jess." "I can't do that, Beth. You know I can't, today was supposed to be my wedding and you know what happened." "Yes. I know what happened but I don't get why you have to beat yourself down so much over it. It isn't your fault that Luke is a bastard. If I have to drag you down to the club and force every glass down your throat, I will." Jessica sighed and started to undress, she just wanted to curl up in her bed and cry till she fell asleep. "I understand how you feel, Jess, but you should be angry at him, not missing him. He left, Jess. With another woman, on your wedding day. There's nothing to miss about him. We are going to nurse your heartbreak with a hangover" Beth rushes into the closet, hoping to find an outfit. Hours later, Jessica starts to regret allowing herself to get dragged to the club. She wasn't strong enough for this, at least not yet. "We can just go home and binge-watch sad movies till we sleep, you know" she tries to convince Beth again. Beth gives her a cold stare and flings her purse over her shoulder as she gets out of the taxi. "There is no way we are crying over him, Jess. Not tonight. We are going to go in there and get drunk, and we are going to forget that today happened" They both walk into the club, Beth dragging them straight towards the bar. "Six shots of your strongest whiskey" Jessica stares wildly at her. Six? "Drink up, Jess. It's about to be a long night" Several shots later, the girls could barely feel their feet and were giggling uncontrollably. "I have to go to the bathroom. Wait here, Jess. Another round coming up once I get back " Henry watches as the taller girl staggers towards the restroom. His gaze shifted towards the other girl at the bar and was shocked to see her staring right at him. He smirks as she starts to walk over. "You go around feeding your eyes with drunk girls, don't you?" "Are you drunk?" He says, amused. "Not completely, but my friend is. I saw you checking her ass out" Henry chuckled. "I wasn't checking her ass out. I was just amused at her attempt to walk to the restroom" Jessica narrows her eyes at the stranger in front of her. Was he from town? "You have beautiful eyes." she blurts out "I have been told. My eyes aren't the only parts of me that are beautiful though." Henry teases. "I can tell" "Can you? You can't see them" Henry looks towards the restroom, expecting the friend to have returned by now. He finally sees her step out with a guy around her age, heading towards the door. "I think your friend is leaving" "Oh, that's Trent. They are together, for now. She will be fine." They talked and teased for about an hour and when she could barely keep her eyes open, he decided to take her home.
