Chapter 2: The Ironclaw Arrives

898 Words
The air in Starfall Abbey was thick with tension as dawn's pale light crept through the shattered windows. Isabel sat by the hearth, still reeling from the shock of Kainen's words. She couldn't stop thinking about the mark on her brow, the one she had always tried to ignore. Could it really be true? Could she really be the She-Wolf of prophecy? The thought felt foreign, like a life she had never chosen but might be forced into. The very idea of it sent a wave of panic through her chest. She didn't want to be the centerpiece of some ancient prophecy. She didn't want to be *the* She-Wolf. A knock at the door startled her from her thoughts. “It's time," Kainen's voice called softly from the other side. Isabel stood, reluctantly making her way to the door. She opened it, finding Kainen standing tall, his presence as imposing as ever. His armor gleamed with the early morning light, and his stormy eyes were fixed on her with an intensity that made her pulse quicken. “Are you ready?" he asked, his tone a mixture of command and something softer beneath it, something like concern. Isabel hesitated, glancing back toward the darkened hall where the Mother Superior's watchful eyes still lingered. The older woman hadn't spoken to her since their conversation the night before, but Isabel could feel the weight of her judgment. “I don't know," Isabel whispered, her voice uncertain. “I don't even know what's happening, Kainen. Why me? Why now?" Kainen stepped into the room, closing the door behind him with a soft click. He approached her slowly, his hands clasped behind his back. “Because the prophecy is real," he said quietly. “The Blood Star is not a myth. And you… Isabel, you are part of it." She shook her head. “I don't care about prophecies or legends. I'm just a girl who's been locked away my entire life." Kainen's expression softened, but only for a moment. “Maybe. But the blood in your veins doesn't lie." He paused, then added, “You are not alone in this. I'm here to help you. But you have to trust me." Isabel swallowed hard, the fear of the unknown clawing at her chest. She didn't trust anyone, least of all the man who stood before her, a military commander with a past she didn't understand. But there was something in his eyes, something that made her believe he wasn't just another power-hungry noble. He seemed… genuine. “What happens next?" Isabel asked, her voice barely above a whisper. Kainen studied her for a long moment, as if weighing his words. “We leave the abbey, head south to the Silverfang Citadel. The Kingblood Seal is there. We need it, Isabel. The kingdom needs it." Isabel's heart stuttered in her chest. “The Seal? Why?" Kainen's gaze hardened, a flicker of something darker passing through his eyes. “Because without it, the kingdom will fall apart. The Wolf Kingdom is fractured, and your blood—your lineage—may be the only thing that can restore it." Isabel's mind spun. The thought of traveling into the heart of enemy territory, of revealing her cursed bloodline to the very people who would kill her on sight, was terrifying. “And if I don't do this?" Kainen's face darkened, and for the first time, his voice dropped to a low, serious tone. “Then the prophecy will unfold anyway. And your life will be forfeit, as will the kingdom's. There's no way around it." Isabel felt a chill run through her. For a moment, she considered running—disappearing into the wilderness and never looking back. But then, she realized she didn't know how to run from something like this. The prophecy was bigger than her, bigger than any fear she could hold. With a final, resigned sigh, she nodded. “Okay. I'll come with you. But know this—if I do this, I do it on my own terms." Kainen's lips twitched slightly, a faint smile tugging at the corner of his mouth. “Agreed. But know this as well: We're in this together, whether you like it or not." She couldn't help but feel the smallest flicker of something warm at his words—something almost like trust. --- The soldiers gathered at the abbey's gates, preparing for the long journey ahead. Isabel couldn't avoid the stares of the other monks, their gazes heavy with judgment and fear. The air around them seemed to hum with an ancient, unseen tension, as though the very earth was holding its breath for what was to come. Kainen moved to the front of the group, signaling for the soldiers to mount their horses. His voice rang out, firm and commanding. “We ride for Silverfang Citadel. Stay close. We leave no one behind." Isabel mounted her horse, a wave of dread washing over her as she turned her gaze one last time toward the abbey. The place that had been her prison, her sanctuary, was now nothing more than a distant memory. As they rode into the unknown, Isabel couldn't shake the feeling that her entire life had just been flipped upside down. Her future, and the kingdom's, were tied together in ways she couldn't yet comprehend. But there was no turning back now. ---
