One of Jake’s duties in return for his grant at the university was to act as coach of the debate team. This hadn’t occupied a great deal of his time up to now, but as spring approached, the number of debates with teams from other colleges increased, leading up to finals for a national competition. At each debate, the various coaches had to act as judges for any debate that didn’t involve their own team. Most of the other coaches had full professorships. Jake was the only one who was a graduate student.
