[ Campus Courtyard ]
Hailey sat down on the wooden bench next to Lyric, exhaling a long breath as she dropped her heavy bag onto the grass. She still felt distinctly unsettled, her hands a bit restless from the bizarre events of the morning.
Lyric didn't even look up from her tablet at first, her fingers swiftly scrolling through her digital design layout. "Well, look who finally showed up. Hey, where’s Jaiden? I thought you two were practically joined at the hip today."
"Oh, I just left him in the school parking lot," Hailey said, leaning back against the bench and checking the open courtyard to ensure they had some privacy. "I needed to come straight to you because we had somewhere to be, and I couldn't risk him keeping me there any longer."
Lyric paused, finally turning off her tablet and sliding it into her tote bag. Her sarcastic smile faded when she noticed the faint line of anxiety creasing Hailey's forehead. She leaned in closer, lowering her voice.
"Whoa. Hailey? What's wrong? You look completely thrown off. Did something happen between you two?"
"Lyric, I think I just saw a side of Jaiden that I've never seen before," Hailey whispered, the words coming out in a low, hurried rush. "Before the lecture this morning, I followed Jaiden and found him in the restricted East Wing. I hid behind a pillar and saw him confronting this older man in a sharp suit. Jaiden was furious—honestly, it was a little intense. He told the man to stay away from his personal affairs, and then... he took his phone and violently smashed it against the wall. It shattered into a million pieces."
Lyric’s eyes widened in pure shock. "Jaiden? The guy who doesn't even raise his voice? Are you sure it was him?"
"I am a hundred percent sure," Hailey said, her mind still trying to rationalize the image. "And that's not even the strangest part. Ten minutes later, he walked into our lecture hall, sat right next to me, and acted completely normal. He told me he was late because of traffic. When I tried to trap him by asking to borrow his phone to call you, he lied and said it crashed at the gym yesterday. But I called him this morning, Lyric! It rang!"
Lyric stared at her, processing the puzzle. "Wait... if his phone was smashed to pieces in the hallway, and he walked into class ten minutes later acting normal, how did he think he was going to get away with the lie? Did he have another phone?"
"Yes," Hailey breathed, the pieces swirling in her head. "He had a brand-new, identical matte-black phone peeking out of his jacket pocket. He was actively hiding it, keeping his hand over it the whole time thinking I wasn't going to see it. He replaced a smashed phone in less than ten minutes. Who even does that? Who is that man in the suit, Lyric? And why did he call me a 'little doll'?"
As the words left her mouth and she talked it out with her best friend, Hailey felt the heavy weight of her initial anxiety begin to wash off, replaced by a deep, lingering curiosity.
Lyric studied her face for a moment, her pale expression softening as she offered a reassuring shrug. "Look, it’s definitely bizarre, Hailey. It’s like he’s keeping a part of his life completely separate under your nose. But you know Jaiden. He adores you. Honestly, if you just ask him directly about it, he might just come clean. He probably has a completely logical explanation for why he was handling whatever family drama that was."
Hailey considered the advice, the tension in her shoulders finally relaxing a bit. "Maybe you're right. I should just ask him."
Before Lyric could answer, a shadow fell over their bench, cutting off the warm afternoon sunlight.
Hailey snapped her head up, half-expecting to see Jaiden’s towering frame, but it wasn't him. Instead, a handsome, overly confident guy from their department was standing there, a slow, effortless smirk pulling at his lips.
It was Sam. He was dressed sharply, a couple of buttons on his shirt casually undone, radiating the kind of playboy energy that usually had half the campus turning their heads. Sam one of the guys that is used to running the school, but there was one massive wall he could never climb, Jaiden Lancaster.
Sam had been dying to get close to Hailey since freshman year, but she always turned him down. Now, he was completely intimidated by Jaiden's unmatched wealth and absolute power. Sam had money, sure, but the Lancasters owned the world, and Sam knew better than to play with fire.
But today, seeing Hailey sitting with just Lyric—without her powerful boyfriend anywhere in sight—Sam clearly decided the reward was worth the risk. He ran a hand through his styled hair, shifting his weight casually as he looked down at her.
"Hey, Hailey," Sam murmured, his voice smooth and dripping with charm, though his eyes did a quick, involuntary sweep of the courtyard just to make sure Jaiden wasn't lingering nearby. "I saw you sitting here looking absolutely stunning today. Thought you might need some better company."
Lyric let out a quiet, sarcastic snort, but Hailey kept her composure, looking up at him. "Hey, Sam. I'm actually not lonely at all, just talking to Lyric."
"Right, right," Sam said, smoothly sliding his hands into his pockets. He leaned a bit closer, resting his hand casually on the back of their wooden bench. "In fact, I was thinking you look like you need a real distraction from all these heavy lectures. There's an exclusive new lounge opening downtown tonight. Let me take you out. You, me, drinks—what do you say, gorgeous?"
Hailey let out a soft, amused chuckle, completely unfazed by his charm.
"I appreciate the offer, Sam, really," she said, her tone smooth but delivering a rock-solid rejection.
"But I already have plans with my boyfriend. And clearly, I'm very taken. So a date is definitely out of the question."
Sam didn't look offended at all; a true playboy always knew how to take a rejection with grace. He put his hands up in mock surrender, that lazy, confident smirk firmly back on his face.
"Alright, alright, I see how it is," he chuckled, taking a step backward but keeping his eyes locked onto hers. "Can't blame a guy for trying. But remember, beautiful... you owe me a deed for turning me down so ruthlessly. I'll be collecting on that favor sometime."
"In your dreams, Sam," Lyric cut in, waving her hand to shoo him away. "Move it along."
Sam let out a loud laugh, entirely unbothered as Lyric chased him away. "See you around, Hailey," he called out with a wink. He turned on his heel and sauntered off into the crowd, completely relaxed, leaving the two of them alone on the bench once again.
Hailey watched him go, the brief, playful distraction fading instantly as her mind drifted right back to Lyric's advice about confronting Jaiden directly.
