chapter one -the visit
[Dream university ~the campus ]
Hailey steered her car into the crowded campus parking lot, her eyes scanning the rows until she caught a familiar silhouette.
It was Jaiden, stepping out of his car just a short distance away. He looked effortlessly handsome, adjusting his jacket before turning on his heel and heading toward the main campus buildings without a single glance back.
"Jaiden!" she called out, but her voice was instantly drowned out by the hum of her own engine. She hadn’t fully parked yet, and the car was still running.
Panic and confusion flared inside her. Scrambling to grab her phone from the cup holder, she quickly dialed his number. It rang over and over, buzzing in her ear, but there was no answer.
Frustrated, she hurriedly brought the car to a halt, threw it into park, and rushed out, following the exact route she had seen him take. But by the time she reached the path, there was no sign of him.
She began actively searching the grounds. They had a morning marketing lecture together, and it wasn't like him to just vanish. As she hurried down one of the main walkways, she accidentally bumped into Julie, one of her coursemates. After exchanging quick pleasantries, Hailey wasted no time.
"Hey, have you by any chance seen Jaiden?" she asked, trying to keep her voice casual
It was an easy question to ask anyone—Jaiden was easily one of the most popular, jaw-droppingly handsome guys on campus. Combined with Hailey's status as the resident diva, the two of them were widely envied as the ultimate "it" couple at the university.
Everyone noticed them.
Julie nodded quickly. "Yeah, actually, I just saw him passing by. I think he was heading toward the private East Wing. He was walking really fast, like he was in a massive hurry."
Hailey froze, completely stunned. "The private East Wing? Are you sure?"
"Pretty sure," Julie replied with a shrug.
Hailey thanked her quickly and hurried off, her mind spinning with doubt and a creeping sense of fear. The private East Wing was strictly off-limits to regular students, it was a restricted zone reserved entirely for elite donors, university executives, and ultra-wealthy alumni. Security guards usually took constant turns patrolling the area, making it impossible to slip inside.
Yet, when she reached the grand entrance of the East Wing, Hailey stopped in her tracks. The corridor was dead silent. There wasn't a single security guard in sight.
Stepping cautiously into the forbidden hallway, she suddenly caught the sound of a voice—low, harsh, and cutting through the quiet air. It was Jaiden.
"I'm warning you to stay away from her."
Hailey's heart leaped into her throat. Instinctively, she ducked behind a heavy brick pillar, pressing her back against the wall to hide. Holding her breath, she slowly peeked around the edge. A short distance away stood Jaiden, his posture rigid with an icy fury. He was confronting a man dressed in a sharp, impeccably clean suit. From her angle behind the pillar, she couldn't get a look at the stranger's face, but the sheer danger radiating from the conversation made her blood run cold.
"I know, boy..." a smooth, patronizing voice replied. Hailey shrank back as the man in the sharp suit spoke. "I just had to look into the little doll you got for yourself now."
"f**k you. Stay away from my personal affairs," Jaiden shot back harshly, his voice dripping with venom. He aggressively brushed his dark hair straight back with his hand, a gesture of pure, boiling anger. "And you don't get to show up here uninvited on my campus."
The man chuckled, a sound that made Hailey's stomach churn. "Jaiden, you are slacking, and this new girl is a distraction. I'm here to warn you, your br—"
Before the man could finish his statement, a deafening crash echoed through the restricted hallway, startling Hailey so badly she almost jumped out of her skin. With a violent, explosive motion, Jaiden had gripped his phone and smashed it directly against the wall, sending the screen and internal pieces shattering across the floor.
That terrifying display of rage was the only hint Hailey needed to get the hell out of there. Fear struck her straight to the bone; in the entire two months they had been dating, she had never seen this dark, volatile side of her boyfriend.
Panicked and trembling, she turned on her heel and fled the East Wing, rushing as fast as her legs could carry her straight to the lecture hall. When she slipped through the door, Professor Jane was already inside starting the class. Hailey quickly scrambled into a seat, her hands shaking as she tried to calm her fiercely racing heartbeat.
After two minutes of intense struggle to calm down, she finally managed to get her breathing under control and force the terror to the back of her mind. Pulling out her laptop, she focused on the screen and began taking down notes as Professor Jane lectured.
Ten minutes passed.
Suddenly, a familiar, expensive cologne filled the air around her a split second before a figure slid into the empty space next to her. Jaiden sat down beside her, immediately leaning in to press a soft, lingering kiss against her cheek.
"Babe, sorry I'm late," he whispered smoothly, giving her a reassuring smile. "Traffic was hell today."
Hailey looked up at his breathtakingly handsome face, her heart freezing in her chest. Traffic?
She knew exactly where he had just been. She knew about the forbidden East Wing, the mystery man, and the phone he had violently smashed in a fit of rage. Yet here he was, acting like the perfect, doting boyfriend.
Jaiden was lying to her, and he was doing it flawlessly.
She nodded, forcing a short, quick smile before turning her attention back to the projected screen at the front of the hall. But Jaiden was too smart; he immediately noticed her response was off.
He leaned in closer, his fingers gently brushing a stray lock of hair away from her face and tucking it behind her ear.
"Babe, is everything okay?" he murmured softly.
Before a single word could come out of her mouth, Professor Jane's sharp voice cut through the air. "Mr. Lancaster, I do not appreciate distractions in my class."
Instantly, the entire lecture hall fell quiet, and every single eye in the room turned to look at them. Underneath the desk, where their hands were entwined, Hailey felt Jaiden's grip suddenly clench. He tightened his fingers around hers, the pressure sharp and just a little bit painful, before he abruptly released her. A dark frown marred his handsome face as he glared up at the podium. He stared directly at Professor Jane, his eyes burning, and she stared right back at him without blinking.
That intense, unspoken exchange didn't go unnoticed by Hailey. After a heavy moment, the professor finally turned back around and continued her lecture as if nothing had happened. Hailey's mind raced with questions. What surprised her the most wasn't just the weird tension between them—it was how the professor had managed to notice Jaiden and her whisper-talking when the lecture hall was completely crowded. It felt like she had been watching him the entire time.
For the remaining fifty minutes of the lecture, Hailey's concentration was completely shot. Her focus kept slipping in and out, fading into the background as she felt Jaiden’s eyes on her. Every now and then, he would turn his head and just stare at her, analyzing her reactions.
Jaiden didn't pull out a notebook, and he didn't open a laptop. He just sat there, leaning back with his long legs crossed comfortably under the desk. His hands were tucked casually into his pockets, but despite his relaxed appearance, his posture was incredibly rigid. The silent, heavy staring continued every few minutes, but Hailey kept her face stubbornly glued to her screen, typing random, meaningless notes just to look occupied.
When the lecture finally ended, the professor dismissed the class. Desperate to escape the suffocating silence that had settled between them, Hailey reached for her laptop to pack up. But before her fingers could even touch the lid, Jaiden’s hand smoothly slid over hers. His touch was warm now—a complete contrast to the bruising, painful grip from earlier—but it sent a cold chill straight down her spine.
"Babe," he called out softly. "You've been quiet since I sat down, and you've barely looked at me. Are you sure everything is okay?"
Hailey forced herself to look directly at him this time, putting on her best composure. "Of course, baby. Just a slight headache."
They remained in their seats, waiting for the massive crowd in the lecture hall to thin out before they headed toward the exit. As the students slowly filed out, a sudden idea popped into her head—a risky, desperate plan to get the answers she needed right now.
Turning to him with a sweet, casual expression, she said, "Baby, please help me with your phone? I need to call Lyric to meet us outside."
Jaiden flinched slightly a tiny, micro-movement that absolutely did not go unnoticed by her. Instantly, he reached out and brushed her face romantically, a sweet gesture that she knew was just a calculated tactic to buy himself a few seconds to compose another lie.
"Uh, babe, my phone actually crashed," he said smoothly.
"Really? When and why?" she asked quickly.
The moment the words left her mouth, Jaiden gave her a sharp glance of pure suspicion. She had replied too fast, too eager.
Catching himself, he looked away before replying, "At the gym.
Yesterday."
"Oh, really?" she pushed, keeping her voice sweet but digging the trap deeper. "But I called you this morning and it rang."
"What?!" For a fraction of a second, his perfect composure cracked. He blinked, quickly recovering his calm facade. "Oh... maybe it didn't completely die off yet."
Before she could ask anything else, Jaiden immediately sat up, completely cutting off the conversation to avoid any further questioning from her. The doting boyfriend persona was back in place as he offered her his hand, signaling it was time for them to leave.
