At our wedding, my fiancé, Lucas Grant, was raising a glass with his friends when his childhood friend, Vanessa Cole, suddenly arched a brow at him.

"Lucas, I still remember what you told me at my 18th birthday party. You said that if you ever got married and I showed up to steal you away, you would leave with me."

She smiled. "Well, I'm here to steal you away now. Are you coming with me or not?"

Lucas looked at me apologetically. "Emmy, you've always said you love that I keep my promises..."

My face went cold.

His voice softened. "I'll go with Nessa for a little while and come right back. Wait for me."

One of his friends even chimed in with that classic line. "Emma, if Luke had wanted to be with Nessa, they would've gotten together years ago. You wouldn't even have had a chance."

I stared at Lucas and asked him one last time, "Are you sure you want to leave with her?"

His silence was his answer.

"Fine."

I walked straight to a table in the corner and reached for the hand of the man sitting there. His hand was warm and smooth beneath mine.

"Adrian, does your promise to marry me still stand?"

Chapter 1
The moment I asked, every eye in the room swung toward us. The two people staring hardest were Lucas, who had already made it to the door, and Vanessa beside him. Vanessa folded her arms and gave a scornful laugh. "Lucas, I didn't know your fiancée had this much nerve. Everyone knows Adrian's been hung up on a first love who died years ago. Women have thrown themselves at him for years, and he's rejected every one of them. If he finds out someone's been scheming behind his back, he'll blacklist their family's company without a second thought." She tilted her chin toward me. "If your fiancée crosses him, do you really think Grant Group will survive it?" Adrian Mercer sat with one long leg crossed over the other, looking as though he hadn't heard a word Vanessa said. He lifted his eyes to me. "What makes you think I'd marry you?" I leaned close to his ear, bringing the faint scent of gardenias with me. I lowered my voice. "Because I saw the nightgown I lost years ago in your bedroom. And judging by the wrinkles in it..." His eyes widened. The tips of his ears turned bright red. He swallowed. A second later, he caught my hand, laced his fingers through mine, and led me straight out of the wedding venue. Lucas and Adrian weren't close, but their companies had done business together. Once, Lucas received a call from Adrian asking him to discuss a deal. Mercer Holdings was one of the biggest companies in Aldercrest, so Lucas didn't dare brush him off. He brought me along. Adrian changed the meeting place at the last minute and told us to come to his home instead. While the two men talked business, I went looking for the bathroom and accidentally walked into Adrian's bedroom. That was where I saw the nightgown I had lost back in college. I was still staring at it when Adrian's voice came from just behind me. "Couldn't find it? The bathroom is at the end of the hall." "Got it, Adrian." ***** Lucas hurried after us, but Vanessa grabbed his arm. "Lucas, don't you dare go! How am I supposed to show my face if you walk away now? Don't forget what you promised me." She glanced toward the exit and sneered. "Besides, do you even know what kind of man Adrian Mercer is? You really think he'd agree to marry Emma? Emma loves you to death. There's no way she'd actually leave. She's obviously just trying to make you jealous." His other friends immediately agreed. "Exactly, Luke. Have you forgotten how badly we've treated her? She put up with all of it. Compared to all that, today's nothing." Lucas seemed to come to his senses and stopped in his tracks. "You're right."
