Episode 1: The interview
The aperture of Blackwood Tower stood rangy and forbidding as if daring Aria to stride inmost. With a puff she didn’t perceive to have held, she rejigged the strap of her whacked leather briefcase and walked past the threshold with her heart whumping averse to her ribs like a warning bell.
The entrance hall was a study in silky minimalism. It was durable and easy to clean, making it a practical choice to complement shimmers of light. It spoke polished and fantastic, spreading her shoulders and letting them rest on the marble of the counter.
“I was selected for an interview with Mr Dominic Blackwood,” she said, spreading her shoulders and resting them on the surface of the receptionist's desk.
The receptionist looked halfway into her eyes and back, to her monitor’s screen. “15th floor”, she said, pressing a button Aria was oblivious about.
Aria was filled with something she couldn’t lay her fingers on— a mix of excitement and fear racing inside her as she entered the elevator. Watching the numbers climb at its usual speed, waiting to get to the 15th floor - where her destiny will be told or untold.
The lift slid open to an assistant who stood right in front of the elevator waiting for Aria. “Come with me” she whispered, making a directory gesture.
They walked into a long and narrow corridor, each part of the building showcasing the amazing talent of architecture and interior designers. This wasn’t just any kind of building, it was an electronic building and everything made super sense.
After walking for what Aria gazed at for 30 minutes. They stopped at an oak door. “Mr. Blackwood is inside”.
Aria walked in, and there he sat behind an L-shaped executive table, his aura filled the room like a legend—just like she expected. His sharp gaze locked on her.
“Miss Caldwell?” He asked rhetorically with a deep toned voice. “Please seat ”. He added.
She buried herself in one of the deep leather chairs opposite the table, searching for words to output.
“Thank you” she nodded while putting her voice together “I’m grateful for this opportunity “. She swallowed, barely looking into his eyes.
Dominic slanted backward, rotating on his seat, accessing her like a chess master plundering on his next move. This terrified Aria to her bone marrow.
“You come highly recommended“ he finally spoke, his actions unreadable. “But I need more than bare recommendations. I need to see your creativity and resilience—those who can work under pressure and more difficult situations. Do you fit into that category?”
Aria tugged a little smile while meeting his eye, her pulse quickening“ Yes, I do. I’ve handled projects in infeasible situations and provided good results when my colleagues thought it was unachievable. I adapt to any circumstances I find in my workspace”.
Dominic was impressed for the first time, something glimmered in his eyes— acquiescence, perhaps.
“Impressive,” he said with a tiny smile tugging his cheeks backward. “But, I am not interested in mere words. Actions will convince me. Talk about a time you handled a challenge you didn’t know you could overcome.”
Aria dived into the story of a compound merchandise campaign she had changed despite inner vandalism and a looming time limit. As she spoke, Dominic nodded alongside, watching her with visible intensity. Every word complements the previous.
When she was done speaking, he blinked with a wink of interest sharpening on his cheek. “That was well put. I have one more question for you”.
Aria propped up anticipating the question and getting her mind ready.
“Have you been compelled to make a moral decision — with consequences that are endangered beyond business?”
Her breath cut for a while. Of course, she didn’t expect the question to come out easily. For a moment, the gravity of the question hit her spin, and the muteness buried between them got quite uncomfortable. Just as she got ready to respond, the door burst open, and the assistant dashed in, looking shattered and hasty.
“My apologies for interrupting, Mr Blackwood, but your 11 o’clock appointment has just arrived…” She hung back, glancing agitatedly at the bedlam on the other side “And….she’s creating a seen” she completed.
Dominic’s face wrinkled in irritation. “Let her in. And keep things in place”.
The assistant stepped aside, giving way to a rumpled woman whose tailored suit was in folds. Aria’s heart sank. Veronica. The girl of the people.
Veronica’s eyes reached Aria’s, her expression quite horrifying. “What a good day. Aria Caldwell” she said with a mocking surprise in her tone, “How little the world we live in.”
Dominic’s sharp eyes flicked at Aria. “You know her?”
Before Aria could draw an explanation, Beronica had already chipped in venomously “Of course, We way in college, Aria was always the calm and meek girl.”
Aria clutched her fist, resisting the urge to be rude. Calm, calm Aria, you don’t have to ruin your day.
“Miss Caldwell?” Dominic leaned back, his gaze stripping as he noticed a string of tension in the room.
Aria exhaled, gathering every strength she could muster.
“Veronica and I crossed paths in the past, but our involvement is not quite relevant to the position I’m applying for. I’m here today only based on excellence and I hope that’s what the company assesses.”
Dominic felt fulfilled with her response—a sign of approval.
“That’s nice.”
Veronica gasped “You’re not choosing her over me, are you? I’m way more qualified,” Veronica added.
Dominic raised a hand, hushing her with a gaze sharp enough to ice fire. “Miss Veronica, I propose you exit now while you still have the recourse to do so .” Veronica gaped at him in awe, but his assistant was already steering her to the doorway. “This isn’t extinct, Aria,” she spat as she was escorted out.
The door was shut, leaving Aria solely with Dominic again. He was mute, for instance, his gawp fixated on her like a hawk sizing up its prey. Then, slowly, a beam spread across his face—dark, rapacious, and pleased. “Congratulations, Miss Caldwell. You’ve scraped through your final test.”
Aria’s heart skyrocketed, a meld of dubiety and triumph. “Thank you,” she replied, smacking the docility of the words more than she’d reckoned.
Dominic's beam broadened. "I eagerly anticipate seeing you at work. Have a great day.”
As she rose to exit, her pulse still palpitating, Aria knew one thing for certain: whatever was succeeding would diverge from anything she’d ever experienced. And it was inexorable.
