Chapter 20: Secrets

1108 Words
Time passed by between the two of us, the bubbles in the tub popping and bursting into nothingness. The silence was almost becoming uncomfortable, but I understood, needing a moment to understand what I said. Hell, I hardly understood why my father did what he did. I don't know why I was dragged to the middle of no where and I definitely don't understand why he branded me. My hand played in slow circles with the frothy patches, my mind whirring through endless thoughts. Sighing, I looked up to James, and he was staring at me, but he seemed lost still. "What?" I half smiled at him as he snapped from the trance he was in. "I'm sorry, I was speaking to the twins for a moment…" his voice trailed as his eyes glassed back over. "You-what?" I was confused. I had read in the library that vampires could speak telepathically, but the books also suggested it shouldn't be taken literally either...after frying my brain for hours, I gave up with the riddles of the world here. "I'm sorry, Athena.. I need to go tend to this…" He stood as he started to make his way to the door. Turning slightly, he looked back at me, hesitating. "Just...explain later?" I was leaning against the edge of the tub, and I could even hear my own sadness in my voice. Sighing, he walked back towards me, kneeling down, his shorts raised slightly and revealed even more muscle. Thoughts of what happened in the sheets had my sadness quickly turning to heat. "If you want to come…" his voice trailed as his eyes met mine with such seriousness, "You have to promise you won't be mad at me." What did he do?... "Why would I be mad?" I tried to keep my voice steady as a thousand thoughts flushed my brain. "It has to do with your father and that p... You can come, but you can't be mad at me. I am going to go get dressed, and I will lay something out for you as well." Kissing my forehead, he stood, and was gone in a flash. A million thoughts flooded me. Standing up, I retreated out of the tub. Already feeling like I was drowning again. What could it mean? How does he know? This man seemed to have the answers for everything, and that usually meant trouble. Drying myself, I padded out to the room, where an outfit sat onto his bed. A simple black ruffly blouse, with simple dark jeans. A matching set of under sat on the pile, and I could feel the blush rising up my neck. Looking around, I didn't see him. Getting dressed, I sit and wait while I braid my hair to the side. Minutes passed, and I sat, my anxiety starting to surface harder as I couldn't stop the shaking of my knee as my foot bounced from the floor. The door opened from between our two rooms as the silhouette of the capturing vampire as he makes his way closer. "Had to find you some shoes." His smile met his stunning steel eyes, the dark and light grays mixing like a pool of liquid metal. In his hands, a pair of black vans and a pair of socks. Placing the shoes at my feet, he lifts one foot gently. "I could have done that," I raised an eyebrow towards him. "I know," his chuckle brought a smile to my face. "Okay," I shrugged my brows and sarcastically rolled my eyes at him. "Was that an eye roll? It was pretty sad." I could see the smile he was trying to restrain as he focused on tying my laces. "Maybe it was." I tried to keep my smile to myself, as I held my poker face. "Oh, are we upset? Wittle babbbby," his brows wagged up and down as he finished tying and met my eyes. A baby? Me? Rolling my eyes, I lifted my foot to his shoulder and wiggled my brows back. A big smile spread his face, and I could feel the heat bubbling around us just for a moment. Pushing my heel back quickly, he fell onto his bottom, my laughter unavoidably leaving my mouth. His face held shock across his sharp features as I giggled myself to tears. "I'm-not-a-baby..." I got out through my giggles as a smile slowly spread across his lips. "You sneaky fox," he laughed shortly. In a second, he was inches from my expression that quickly stilled from the giggles. His figure towered over my small body as I felt the blood drain from my face, before rushing back in blushing. "What? Not funny anymore?" He raised his brows at the question. I couldn't help the smile that spread from my lips. "Nope, still funny." I giggled as he rolled his eyes and stood back. "Okay, little fox, you won, for now." A knock sounded from the hall door, and I could hear that there were going to be some words said later behind James' voice. "Let's go?" He extended his elbow out for me to loop my hand into it. Standing, I took his gesture, and we made our way out to meet the twins in the hall. "Sir, I don-" Charles was cut off with just a glance from James. Where was he going to take me? "No more secrets, boys." Was all James said as he pulled me along with him, making our way to an elevator down the hall. The silence between us four was enough to make me feel sick to my stomach. The air seemed to thin as I watched the doors shut and the letter B2 for the basement was pressed. This place had four underground floors, and the massive castle-like structure was up-to-date with the latest that modern people can buy. The ticking of the floors passing, indicated our descent, as my heart seemed to thump in my chest harder with every small ding. "James, what is this?" My voice sounded small, and I would even admit I was starting to feel panic coming. I don't know what I am about to face... The little being, making me jump as the doors opened swiftly. "Your father, Athena. He is here, and he is going to tell you the truth. Or I will break every bone in his body, and shred him up piece by piece til he does." I could hear anger in his voice, and his sharp features refused to look at me, his feet moved us forward as the shock of what was just said sank in. He is here?....
