TWO “Mom, I am conducting an interview today and I don’t think your presence here is needed in any way, you just like getting at me every chance that you get and it is not even fair at all, mom”, Cullen said to his mother that morning. His mother was always pressuring him to get a wife. “Huh, I know Cullen, but you are old right now, don’t you think that it is time for you to at least get a wife or something? You are always on your own, my son, in this huge house, on your own. Don’t you get bored sometimes, so what is wrong with you? I am even thinking that maybe you are not normal and it is actually making sense now. Why do you like just being on your own? Why don’t you like company? I have given birth to you, taken care of you, watched you grow into this young handsome man that you are right now, but never in my life have I known you to be an introvert. You know you can say all you want, but you know me, I am not going to go out of your house unless we agree on something here. Look at me Cullen, how old do you think I am?” she asked, and Cullen sighed. That was always the topic whenever his mom would visit him, finding a wife for him. He was almost thirty and his mom did not see any hopes of him getting a wife or a girlfriend for that matter. He was always by himself, and since she and his father were getting old, she thought it would be wise for him to get himself a wife. That would make him at least an heir to their multibillion company. After all, he had everything that he could ever need. “Mom, I am just but twenty-nine. I don’t see why I should be in a hurry to get myself a wife. I am still young, and despite that I haven’t even met a perfect girl I can take home yet, mom, and I have been telling you that countless times. But you are always insisting on something you know isn’t easy, mom, I suggest you go home and be with dad. I am thankful you came to visit and I am more than happy and grateful at the same time, but I think it is time for you to go back home to dad now.” “Are you being serious right now? Are you chasing me out of your house, Cullen, and just a point of correction, you are soon to be thirty in a week’s time, so no, you are not twenty-nine, you are old enough to have a wife and kids. So I need grandchildren and you don’t have to find a perfect wife. No one is perfect but we are always trying to live with their imperfections. Don’t start comparing those sculptures and the arts with human beings. We are not perfect, so just find a girl and make her your wife. Time is running out, or do you want me to die before I can even hold my grandkids? I know I will leave but I just came here to remind you that you are getting old and no one is going to wait for you or look for you, find yourself a man and stop living in this house alone like you have no family, stop living like an animal. I am your mother and I have said my own”, she said, and stood up from the couch. It was just 7.30 in the morning and Cullen was getting ready for work. He had an interview to hold that morning and, since he also had an intern to meet and coach on what to do, he had a busy day ahead but his mom was making it hard on him so early in the morning. Cullen Smith, was a museum curator with a fetish for perfection. He always believed that everything and everyone was supposed perfect, just like the arts and the sculptures he owned. No one had really ever gotten close to him, except for a few friends who were in his small circle of friends. In fact, he had two to three friends and Chloe Watson was his friend for college, together with his two best friends. His circle was complete. How could he even get close to him? They were never as perfect as the sculptures, art that never changes. He always liked everything perfect for himself and that is the same reason why he was still holding back when it came to getting himself a wife. He wanted a perfect lady and he still had not come across one and that is what his mom was. He not understanding “Mom, I am not chasing you but I am heading to work. We can always talk about this some other time because you and I both know that this conversation is not going to end, not right now, and as you can see, I am getting late for work. I will come home on the weekend and we can talk about this mom. But for now I am heading to work. You can stay back if you want. They will take care of you in my absence and I have heard you please mom. No one is going to die. You will see your grandkids and you will watch them grow. Now can I go to work please?” “No, Cullen, not until you promise that you are going to look for a wife. In fact, I know you are just going to say it to my face because you want to get rid of me, so let me make it easier for you, your birthday. You, in two weeks’ time, if I am not wrong, what if I give you an ultimatum, you are going to bring home your girlfriend or a wife or a girl. But you wish, but by the beginning of next year , I want to attend your wedding. I don’t know how you are going to work it out, but as your mom, I am tired of having to ask you to give me grandkids, so that is the only option left. Bring home someone before the year ends or I will cease being your mom and that is on a serious note. My fellow women out there are busy enjoying life with their grandkids while you are here trying to delay. I don’t know why there is no perfect woman, so stop using that as an excuse. And just so you know, no one can be as perfect as those sculptures you see every day. We are human beings and we are prone to making mistakes. “Mom, you don’t possibly mean that, how will you cease to be my mom and yet you are the one who gave birth to me. Mom said any other thing and I will gladly do it for you, I promise.” “Nothing you say is going to change my mind, Cullen, that is my final decision. Now, if you don’t mind, I will gladly show him out. They knew me. Maybe mind around, and by the way, your father wanted to meet you and talk to you about something I don’t know, so will I see you on the weekend?” she asked with a sly smile on her face and Cullen sighed. There was no way he was going to get in any kind of fight with his mom, because she always knew the right buttons to press and she knew how to get what she wanted. Now he had the task of finding a girl and taking her home to his mother. That was another hard task for him. He was not even sure if he was going to be able to pull or unless he talked to his friends about it, maybe they would have an idea of what he was supposed to do. “Okay mom, I will see you home then. Should I ask my driver to drive you off?” “No thank you, I would like to drive myself today, you go to work. We will talk later. I love you” she said, and kissed him on his forehead before walking out of the house, “I love you too, mom,” he said. He loved his mother so much, despite the kind of rules his mother had for him, he still loved her immensely. She was, after all, his mother and nothing was going to change, not even the rules were going to change the love he had for her. She was still his superwoman. He watched as she got in the car and drove herself out of the compound, before he picked up his car keys and his laptop bag and walked out of the house, he got in his own car and drive himself to work. He had a busy day ahead and the earlier he got to work, the better it was going to get for him.
