Can We Be Friends?
A morning walk, peaceful yet a lonely one. I don't want to be emotional in the early morning, but I couldn't hide the fact and it was too hard to ignore. Others are happily clinging to each of their friends' hands--not that I want that closeness, but yeah a friend to talk with while walking towards school is kind of nice, but then I have no one and I don't plan to make one. I'll just get hurt having one around and maybe anxious once they find out that I was boring. Unlike them, I love to stay at home, secluding myself in the four corners of my room and blasting the perfect cello played through my headphones. Yeah, no more drama then, let's just finish the day as usual and have a good night tonight at my very peaceful fortress, in which I am the boss of my own and the only spectator, in my very own bed. As I continued to stride down the hallway to my first class, I suddenly collided with someone that had caused my things to fall, including my precious customized cello pen. Ignoring the reason of the unfortunate event, I mindlessly picked my things one by one and put them back in my hold. Not until a piece of paper or should I say crumpled paper fell in front of me, out of curiosity, I picked it up together with my things and looked up to see who's the human being behind the act. A pair of hazel eyes twinkling like the stars met my gaze, capturing my whole attention. Yet, it is not the reason that took me by surprise, it was the bright smile that this kid around my age had given me, a thing that I have not ever received the moment I entered this town. And before I could say something, the girl waved at me and walked in the opposite direction I was heading at. Tack! Tack! Tack! The clinging sound of my teacher's shoes is very evident as she slides through the room drawing me back from my reverie of what happened in the hallway minutes ago. The image of the girl smiling at me slowly taking over almost half of my brain, drawing a hole inside my skull. I am not exaggerating, because if you are in my shoes, you'll know exactly what I am feeling. But then again, maybe she's new and doesn't know me, she doesn't know why people of this school and this town have nothing to do with me and if she'll ever know, she would never smile and just avoid me like what the whole town did. Yeah, no one wanted to be with an outcast and that stings. "Heads up class!" the teacher said as she gathered all of our attention. " Today is a very nice day because you'll have a new classmate and she is very happy to join our class. Let us welcome her and be good to her, alright?" she continued as she opened the door and let the newcomer inside. While the teacher and the whole class insisted the newcomer to introduce herself, my mouth hung open. It was the kid from earlier, though I kind of figured she's new, I didn't expect her to be in my class nor to see her again. The smile that she had given me earlier was still there, making it hard for me to look away until our gaze met. Upon seeing me, her smile gets brighter and focuses her eyes like I am the only one she's talking to. " Hi! I'm Celi, a new kid in town and I'm hoping to be friends with you someday," she said as she nodded her head and gave her attention back to our teacher. "Okay Celi, welcome again and feel free to find your seat," the teacher instructed. She, again, bowed her head and like a celebrity in a gala show, all eyes are still on her as they wait where she sits. And as she continued to tread the room, all smiles turned to scowls as the space between us became only inches away. "Hey," she said as she approached me and took the seat beside mine. Being still muddled and aware of the stare from every pair of eyes in the class, I ducked and pretended to be busy with the papers on my table. I know it was rude that I just turned my back on her, but when she realized who I was, she'd probably change seats and find a new one. But instead, I received the opposite of what I was expecting and she approached me again using "Shh" and a slight tap on my shoulder. Clueless of what to respond, I pushed the thought of even trying to face her and busied myself to unfix things on my table and ignored my trembling hands because of the pressure in the attention this new kid was giving me. "Maybe you haven't heard because the front was far from your seat, so I would like to tell you my name again. I'm Celi and I play the cello, what's yours?" she continued ignoring the fact that I wasn't listening to her or at least pretending not to. Yeah, how could someone like me who has been in love with the cello instrument all of my life ignore the person who has the talent to manipulate the stringed thing that I'm inclined to like the most? Definitely no one but me, an outcast who doesn't know how to be with others and to fit into the society she believes she does not belong to. Getting the truth that I am not a good company to be with, the girl went silent and she focused on writing something on her paper. Again, a disappointing sigh came out from my lips, I knew it! She's just another kid like every person of this town, not wanting to be with a kid like I am, and soon became one of them who is going to send disgusting looks every time they'd see me. "Plop" a thing has again fallen on my table, a crumpled thing, a crumpled piece of paper. Not minding the person behind, knowing who it was from the direction it came from, I slowly opened the crumpled thing and it took seconds for me to absorb the letters written in it. Four words, with four syllables, composed of fourteen letters and a question mark at the end, the reason why my life takes its rotation, casting me out from being an outcast of this town. Teary-eyed, I finally face the smiling face new kid beside mine and say: "Thank you and of course, we can be friends." --The End--
