Chapter 1
The Deal of a Lifetime The heavy oak doors of Sinclair Enterprises loomed before me, polished to a gleam under the golden glow of the chandelier above. I stood motionless, my fingers curled into tight fists at my sides, willing my pulse to steady. This wasn’t just a business meeting. This was an ambush orchestrated by my father, Jonathan Sinclair, a man who had spent a lifetime playing puppet master to those around him—including his only daughter. “Evelyn,” came my father’s voice, cool and commanding. “Come in.” Taking a breath, i pushed the doors open and stepped inside the vast office. Floor-to-ceiling windows cast streaks of amber light across the mahogany desk, the city skyline stretching beyond. Two men stood near the bar cart at the side of the room, their dark suits a stark contrast to the elegance of the space. One of them was my father, his expression unreadable as always. The other— Adrian Hawthorne. I had seen his face countless times in magazines, financial reports, and even the gossip pages that painted him as both a ruthless businessman and an elusive bachelor. But meeting him in person was something else entirely. He exuded power, his presence effortlessly dominating the room. The sharp cut of his navy-blue suit did little to soften the hard edges of his physique, nor did it disguise the calculated glint in his icy blue eyes as he turned to face me. A knowing smirk tugged at the corner of his lips. “Miss Sinclair.” “Mr. Hawthorne,” I returned evenly, schooling my features into indifference despite the unease coiling in my stomach. Jonathan Sinclair stepped forward, clasping his hands together. “I’m sure you both know why you’re here.” I did. I had known from the moment i received the summons to this meeting, though i had hoped—prayed—i was wrong. My father gestured toward the leather chairs across from his desk. “Sit.” I hesitated before lowering myself into the chair. Adrian took the one beside me, the faint scent of his cologne—something deep, rich, and subtly spiced—filling my senses. It irritated me how effortlessly composed he appeared, as if this was just another deal to him. My father sat across from them, folding his hands atop the desk. “Hawthorne Industries and Sinclair Enterprises are at a crossroads. Competition in our field is fiercer than ever, and to secure both our companies’ futures, a merger is necessary.” My jaw clenched. “Then merge them. Negotiate the terms. What does this have to do with me?” Jonathan sighed, his expression one of patient disappointment. “It’s not that simple. A merger of this magnitude requires unity at every level—boardrooms, stakeholders, and the public eye. A business alliance alone won’t cut it.” Adrian’s voice was smooth, deliberate. “Your father and I have agreed that the best course of action is an arranged marriage.” My breath caught in my throat. My fingers curled into the arms of the chair as i turned to Adrian, then back to my father. “You can’t be serious.” Jonathan remained unmoved. “This is bigger than you, Evelyn. Bigger than either of us. You’ve always wanted a seat at the table, to be taken seriously in this world. This is your chance.” “By selling me off like a commodity?” I snapped, my voice laced with outrage. My father’s gaze hardened. “By securing your legacy.” A silence stretched between them, thick with tension. I could hear the faint ticking of the clock on the wall, could feel the weight of Adrian’s stare boring into her. I turned to him, voice biting. “And what exactly do you get out of this?” Adrian didn’t flinch. “Control.” The sheer arrogance of the word sent heat coursing through my veins. “Of me?” He let out a low chuckle, the sound both amused and infuriating. “Of my company. My future. Marrying you ensures that neither of our fathers meddle in our affairs once the merger is solidified.” I wanted to scream, to throw the nearest object across the room. But i refused to give them the satisfaction of seeing me lose control. Instead, i leveled my gaze at her father. “And if I refuse?” Jonathan leaned back, his expression unreadable. “Then I will ensure you have nothing left to refuse with.” The finality in his tone made my blood run cold. He wasn’t bluffing. He never bluffed. Adrian shifted beside me, then stood, adjusting the cuffs of his jacket with practiced ease. “You have until tomorrow to decide.” With that, he turned and strode toward the door. Before he left, he paused, glancing over his shoulder. “I suggest you choose wisely, Miss Sinclair.” Then he was gone, leaving me staring at the space he had occupied, my world tilting beneath my feet. The night air was crisp as I stepped onto the balcony of my penthouse, the city stretching below in a dazzling array of lights. My mind raced, replaying every word from that cursed meeting. Marry Adrian Hawthorne? It was preposterous. Insulting. Yet my father’s threat rang louder than my indignation. He had the power to strip me of everything—my position, my reputation, my access to the company i had spent years proving myself worthy of. And Adrian? He had barely blinked at the arrangement. As if marriage to me was nothing more than a chess move in his grand strategy. A knock at the glass door behind me made me tense. I turned, heart pounding. Adrian stood in the doorway, hands in his pockets, his expression unreadable. “What the hell are you doing here?” I demanded. He stepped onto the balcony, the golden city light reflecting in his icy gaze. “We need to talk.” “There’s nothing to talk about.” His jaw tightened. “You and I both know that’s not true.” I folded my arms, glaring. “You mean because my father has backed me into a corner?” Adrian exhaled slowly. “Because whether you like it or not, we’re about to be tied together in ways neither of us expected.” Silence settled between us, the weight of reality pressing down. Finally, I asked the question burning in my mind. “Why did you agree to this?” Adrian’s eyes darkened, something unreadable flickering in our depths. “Because I don’t trust your father. And neither should you.” My breath hitched. A warning. A veiled truth lurking beneath his carefully controlled words. And for the first time, i realized—this wasn’t just a deal. This was a game of power. And i was right in the middle of it. I sat in my office the next morning, staring at the engagement contract my father had sent over. The thick packet of legal jargon taunted me from my desk, a cruel reminder that my life was no longer my own. I wasn’t ready to sign. Not yet. But i needed a plan, and more than anything, i needed to understand Adrian Hawthorne’s true motives. A sharp knock interrupted my thoughts. “Come in.” The door swung open, and Adrian stepped inside, his expression unreadable. “It’s time to talk strategy, I,” he said, closing the door behind him. I met his gaze, steel in my voice. “Then let’s make something clear—I don’t intend to be a pawn in your game.” Adrian smirked. “Good. Because I need a queen.” The morning sun cast a golden glow over Manhattan as I sat in the conference room of Sinclair Enterprises, hands wrapped tightly around my coffee cup. I hadn’t slept. How could i, knowing that today i was expected to either agree to a life-altering deal or face the consequences of defiance? Adrian was late. I glanced at the clock. Five minutes past nine. A small part of me was pleased that he was the one keeping me waiting. It gave me the illusion of control, however fleeting. The door opened, and in he strode, exuding the effortless confidence i loathed. “Good morning, Miss Sinclair.” I didn’t respond. Instead, i pushed a folder across the table toward him. “Before I sign anything, I have conditions.” He arched a brow but said nothing as he flipped open the folder. His eyes scanned the document, his expression unreadable. “You want a separate business portfolio,” he mused, tapping a finger against the paper. “Full authority over Sinclair’s philanthropic ventures. And an opt-out clause in two years?” I met his gaze squarely. “If this is a business transaction, then I’m treating it as such.” Adrian smirked, closing the folder with a decisive snap. “I expected nothing less.” I swallowed hard. “And?” “Consider them accepted.” Relief flooded me, but i masked it well. “Good. Then I expect the revised contract on my desk by noon.” Adrian leaned forward, his voice dropping. “One more thing, I.” I tensed as he reached across the table, trailing a finger along the rim of her coffee cup. “A business merger is one thing. But a marriage? That requires chemistry.” I refused to let my composure c***k. “Then I suggest you work on your charm, Mr. Hawthorne.” His low chuckle sent a shiver down my spine. “Oh, I intend to.” I had just set the first terms of battle. But the war was far from over.
