Amelia was inside her car. As soon as she got inside, her tears fell. Her heart was so heavy that she couldn’t even breathe properly.
How could Jefferson just throw away everything just like that?
They were fine before he flew abroad. Why all of a sudden he ended everything between them?
She thought that she would never be alone since Jefferson came into her life. What had she done wrong?
She loved him with all she had.
A lot of thoughts were wandering inside her head when suddenly her phone rang.
Her vision was blurry because of the tears that continued to flow down.
“H— hello,” she said in a low voice between her tears.
“Amelia! For God’s sake, where are you?”
“N— nath,” that’s all she could say and then she sobbed. She couldn’t contain the emotions she had inside of her.
That moment, she let herself cry so loud. She knew that no one could understand her except for her best friend.
“Mel, what’s wrong? Is everything okay? Tell me, where are you now?” She could hear the worry in his voice.
But Amelia couldn’t say any words. All she did was to cry. She felt that crying on her best friend would lessen the heaviness of her heart that moment.
THere was silence. It was only her cry that could be heard. Nathaniel just heaved heavily on the other line. He knew her for a long time. He knew her very well. He just let her cry and thought that would make her feel better.
Amelia was chasing her breath. Her nose was stuffy because she was crying non-stop.
She was still in front of Jefferson’s house. She didn’t know how long she had been there. She couldn’t find the strength to turn on the engine and drive away from the place.
She couldn’t determine if the man was looking at her through the window or not. She didn’t care what the man was doing. All she wanted to do at the very moment was to cry. There was so much pain. Jefferson broke up with her and he was already dating someone else.
She knew that it was not because of her sleeping at Nathaniel’s place. It was something else.
She couldn’t believe that the man would just give up their relationship that easily. Jefferson betrayed her. She never thought that would happen. She never imagined that day would even come.
Amelia continued with her thoughts while she felt the piercing pain in her heart. Jefferson was the perfect guy for her. She thought that he was the one that was right for her. But what happened?
He was her ideal man. He was smart and he came from a wealthy family.
Jefferson was known to be one of the successful young business tycoons. He was handsome and she knew that he was every woman’s dream.
She thought that she was lucky because she was Jefferson’s girlfriend but she was wrong.
Amelia believed that he purposely broke up with her and he was just trying to put the blame on her. It was obvious that the man was already trying to date another woman.
She didn’t know the woman who was with him. She was wearing a robe which made her look like she just got out of bed.
“Mel, are you okay now?” Nathaniel’s voice dragged her out from her deep thoughts.
“Nath, it’s over. Jeff and I broke up,” she said in a low voice.
“Yes, haven’t you told me that the other day? Where are you? Are you in his place?”
“But Nath, I— I am pregnant,” she continued. There was a long silence on the other line.
She knew that her best friend was shocked with the news that she just broke.
“Nath?” She called his name. “Aren’t you going to say anything?”
“I will but just wait for me there and I am calling a taxi now,” he said.
In a few seconds, she heard a car stopped on the other line and then a sound of the car door being closed.
Then she heard Nathaniel mention Jefferson’s address.
There were mixed emotions inside her heart. She was sad because of what happened to her and Jeff and at the same time she was thankful because Nathaniel was there on her side.
Despite the pain, she knew that she wasn’t alone at least because her best friend was there with her.
“Mel, I am on my way there. Don’t turn off the call. Just wait for me there. Don’t go anywhere, you understand?”
“And what are you going to do?”
“Just wait for me there,” he said.
“No, Nath, what are you going to do here?” She suddenly felt nervous. If Jefferson would see them together then the man’s speculation might be proven right in his mind. She didn’t want that to happen. She was innocent.
“I am going to pick you up,” he calmly said to her.
“What should I do, Nath?”
Her question made the eyebrows of the man on the other line knitted together.
“For what?”
“Baby,” she quickly answered. She was trying not to sob again as she thought about her situation.
“What are you supposed to be doing? Let the baby live. You are not alone, Mel. If that’s what you are thinking. I am here with you right now. Just calm down and we will talk about this later when I get there, okay? Does Jeff know about the child?”
“Yes, I told him that I am pregnant.”
“What did he say?”
“Nothing.”
“What do you mean nothing?”
“He doesn’t want to believe that I am pregnant.”
“Huh?”
“He thinks that the child is yours!” Amelia couldn’t help but feel emotional. How could Jefferson deny their child? He was the only man in her life.
For God’s sake, Nathaniel was her best friend!
“How I wish that’s my child. He is an asshole. Just wait for me there and I will give him a lesson that he will never forget.”
“No, please stop. There is no need for you to do that. I do not want him to think that we really have a romantic relationship.”
“God, you really love him that much? Lucky asshole!”
The next second, she saw a taxi stopped in front of her.
Nathaniel quickly got off it and then he went straight inside her car.
Amelia couldn’t help but hug the man. It felt like all of the things that she was feeling would suddenly fade away because of his presence. Nathaniel was her saviour. With that thought, she cried again.
“Shhh… No need to cry. I am already here,” Nathaniel said in a comforting voice as he patted her on the back.
“He is an asshole. You know what? It is his loss and not yours.”
“But what should I do? What about my baby? He is going to be a bastard,” she said and then there was a sharp pain in her heart.
She always dreamt of a complete family but based on the situation, she couldn’t give that to her child.
“Mel, you know what? Just relax. Don’t think about anything. I am here and I am going to help you, okay?” Nathaniel looked her directly in the eye.
“But my baby needs a father,” she said, trying to hold back her tears again.
“I know. But for now, don’t think about that. Let’s go home and you need to calm yourself. Stop crying. It will not be good for you and your baby,” he said and then he helped her get out of the car.
Amelia shook her head. “I don’t know, Nath. I don’t want to raise my kid alone. I don’t want him to be a bastard.”
“Come on, let’s go home and everything will be okay,” he said.
Amelia lifted her head and she saw Jefferson from his window. He was looking at them.
“Be strong for your child. You need to be strong for the sake of your child. I know that it hurts so much right now but there is nothing else that you can do. Do you want to beg for his love?”
That question suddenly made her stop.
Was she ready to beg? A couple of hours ago, she knew that she was but how could she do that when there was another woman in Jefferson’s life?
While Amelia saw the woman hug Jefferson from behind.
“I cannot believe that I have a friend like him. He is really an asshole. I am sorry, Amelia. I know that if it’s not for me, you will not meet him. I am sorry because he broke your fragile heart,” Nathaniel said. She could feel that he was just trying to hold on with his emotions.
Amelia looked at Nathaniel. She could see traces of guilt in her best friend's face.
She shook her head. “Oh, no, please don’t think that way. It isn’t your fault that we end up like this. If there is anyone who should be blamed for my situation, it is no other than me. I am stupid and gullible. I fell in love with him that easily and gave everything.”
