Chapter 1
The bus groaned to a stop in the middle of nowhere. Elara Wynter stepped off with a worn backpack slung over one shoulder and a letter clutched tight in her hand. Her boots sank into the gravel shoulder of a cracked mountain road. No station. No welcome. Just the biting scent of pine, the hush of a windless evening, and a rickety wooden sign half-swallowed by weeds: Welcome to Hollow Pines — Population 1,732 The air here was heavier than she remembered—colder, too. Even the sunlight felt off. Like it didn’t quite reach the forest floor. She’d been gone twelve years. Long enough to forget most of it. But not the fire. "Elara!" a voice called from across the road. A tall man in a patched flannel coat stood beside an old pickup truck, leaning on the open passenger door. His beard was darker than in the photo her mother kept tucked inside the family Bible, but the eyes were the same—storm gray and tired. "Uncle Malcolm?" she asked. He gave a stiff nod. "Didn’t think you’d come." "Didn’t think I had a choice." He looked like he wanted to say something—maybe even apologize—but instead, he just muttered, “Get in. Sun’s dropping.” They rode in silence for several miles, the engine rattling beneath the low drone of static on the radio. Trees pressed in on both sides of the road, tall and sharp as spears. Hollow Pines, true to its name, was surrounded by endless forest. Dense, ancient, and unsettlingly quiet. "Town hasn’t changed much," he finally said, glancing her way. "But people’ll talk. Some still remember what happened at the estate." Elara’s fingers tightened around the strap of her bag. She didn’t remember much from that night—just smoke, screams, her mother’s hands pushing her into the arms of a stranger. A voice whispering, Run, baby. Don’t stop. Don’t look back. “I wasn’t planning to make friends,” she said. Malcolm gave a humorless chuckle. “Good. Best keep to yourself.” They pulled into a long dirt driveway flanked by rusting fence posts. At the end stood a weathered two-story cabin. The roof sagged slightly, and moss crept up the stone foundation like it was trying to reclaim it. “This is home now,” he said, shutting off the engine. “Spare room’s upstairs. Water’s hot if you don’t mind it rusty.” Elara stepped out and looked around. The forest pressed up against the edges of the yard, thick and alive. As the wind shifted, the trees seemed to move—not with the breeze, but like they were watching her. Goosebumps crept up her arms. She didn’t believe in ghosts. Or curses. Or small-town folklore. But Hollow Pines didn’t care what she believed. Later that night, after unpacking, she stood at her window, staring out at the moon through the pine boughs. It wasn’t full—but it was strange. Larger than usual. Tinted faintly red. She hadn’t seen a moon like that since… no. Best not to remember. A knock on her door broke the silence. “Got some stuff of your mom’s,” Malcolm said gruffly, handing her a box wrapped in an old towel. “Was in the attic. Figured you should have it.” She took it carefully. “Thanks.” He paused. “She didn’t deserve what happened. You know that, right?” Elara nodded, unsure if she believed it. When he left, she set the box on her bed and peeled back the towel. Inside were a few journals, a silver pendant shaped like a crescent moon, and a photo of her as a baby—her mother smiling beside her, hair wild, eyes glowing with something fierce. Beneath the journals was an envelope. Her name was written on it in her mother’s handwriting. She stared at it for a long time before opening it. > My dearest Elara, If you’re reading this, it means I’m gone. I’m sorry. I wanted to protect you, but some bloodlines run too deep to hide from forever. Trust no one, not yet. Even those who seem kind may carry old scars and older grudges. The blood moon is coming. You’ll feel it before you see it. When you do, go to the Black Hollow Woods. The truth waits there. Love you forever. – Mom Elara read it twice. Then a third time. Her heartbeat thudded louder with each line. Black Hollow Woods. She vaguely remembered that name—kids at school used to whisper about it. A haunted place. Off-limits. A place where people went missing. She shoved the letter into her journal and tried to breathe. This was ridiculous. Her mother had probably just been paranoid. Delusional, even. Years of isolation could do that to a person. There were no curses. No truth in the woods. And yet… As she turned off the lamp and lay in bed, the whisper of wind through the pines sounded almost like voices. Too soft to understand. Too close to ignore. And somewhere, deep in the forest, a howl rose against the night. Not a coyote. Not a dog. Something older. Something that remembered her.
