Safe?

Chapter Six : Safe? Her POV I woke slowly, the sunlight filtering softly through heavy curtains. My head throbbed, but it wasn’t just exhaustion, it was everything from last night, the betrayal, the shock, the weight of realizing everything I had worked for had been taken. I blinked, trying to focus, and realized I wasn’t in my own home. The room… it was big, alpha-like, with dark wood and soft light, warm and elegant. And there he was. Damian. Sitting quietly beside the bed, his gaze calm, controlled, but there was something softer in it too. I froze. My heart raced—not from fear, exactly, but from confusion. “You’re awake,” he said softly, not a trace of mockery in his voice. “Good. The chef is preparing something for you. You need to eat.” “Where… am I?” I croaked, my throat dry. My voice sounded small even to me. “You’re safe,” he said. “Here. You can rest. I wanted to make sure you had some space, somewhere no one could disturb you. You’ve been through a lot.” I swallowed, my lips dry. Safe. The word felt strange on my tongue. Safe? After Alaric ? After everything? I had almost forgotten what that felt like. “I… I don’t understand,” I whispered. “Why are you helping me?” He gave a faint smile, one that didn’t reach all the way to his eyes, and leaned back. “I know what Alaric did to you. And I also know how it feels to be betrayed by someone you trusted. Someone who should have cared.” My fingers clenched the sheets. “Have you… been watching me?” I asked cautiously, a mix of suspicion and fear twisting in my chest. “Monitoring me?” “Maybe,” he said, and there was a hint of humor in his tone, but it didn’t feel mocking. “But I wasn’t just watching. I was… waiting. Planning. You’re not the only one who wants justice. My pack… my family… I’ve had my reasons too. Alaric hurt people I care about. People I can’t forgive him for.” I stared at him, my chest tight. Something in his voice… it carried pain. Real pain. And yet, it wasn’t like Alaric ’s cruelty. This was measured, deliberate, but honest. “So… we’re… allies?” I asked slowly, almost afraid to speak it aloud. “We’re planning revenge together?” He nodded. “Yes. But more than that… I want you to know that you’re not alone in this. You don’t have to face him by yourself. Not now, not ever.” Something in my chest loosened. For the first time since Alaric ’s betrayal, I felt a small spark of relief. Maybe this wasn’t the end. Maybe there was someone I could trust. I hesitated, then whispered, “How… how do I know I can trust you? How do I know you’re not like him?” He stood slowly and walked to the window, looking out for a moment before turning back to me. “Because I’ve been both worlds, Ava. Human and wolf. I know what it feels like to have everything taken from you, to have someone betray you when you thought they loved you. I’ve made mistakes, yes, but I’ve also learned. And I would never… never take from you what you’ve worked so hard for.” His gaze was steady, sincere. I wanted to believe him. My chest tightened, and a lump formed in my throat. “And… if I trust you… if I agree to this… what then? Are you just using me like he did?” He shook his head, slowly, deliberately. “No. This isn’t about taking. It’s about setting things right. After this… when Alaric is dealt with, I go back to being who I am in my world. I don’t want your lands, your company, your life. I just want you to survive this… to be safe.” Something about the way he said it… the calm certainty, the care… it made me want to cry. I had been so alone for so long. I had been hurt by everyone I trusted. And yet here… Damian. Not rushing me. Not demanding anything. Simply giving me space, showing me I wasn’t entirely alone. I exhaled shakily. “I… I don’t know what to say.” “Then don’t say anything,” he replied softly. “Rest. Eat something first. You need strength. This… all of this… we’ll face it together. Step by step.” For the first time in days, I felt my shoulders relax. My heart still ached from Alaric , still burned with anger and humiliation—but now, there was a tiny flicker of something else. Hope. Safety. Even admiration. He pulled a chair closer and sat, quietly keeping watch over me while I ate. We didn’t speak much at first. Just silence, broken only by the soft sounds of the room. And in that silence, I realized something powerful—I wasn’t completely alone anymore. Not in this fight. Not in this world that had betrayed me so brutally. After a while, he leaned forward, resting his elbows on his knees, his eyes never leaving mine. “You know,” he said, quieter now, “I didn’t always want this. Being an alpha, dealing with politics, protecting a pack… it’s exhausting. When all this is over, when revenge is done… I’ll go back to a simpler life. Maybe even… a quiet one. Just me and my family, my pack. No lies. No betrayals.” I swallowed hard, a lump forming in my throat. “Do you… do you think revenge will make you feel better?” He smiled faintly, almost sadly. “It won’t. Not completely. But it’s necessary. For justice. For those who were hurt. For those who… can’t protect themselves. And maybe… it will help someone like you, who’s been through too much, see that not everyone is cruel.” I nodded slowly, feeling tears prick at my eyes. “I… I think I can trust you.” He gave a small, approving nod. “Good. Then rest. We’ll talk more later. We have a long path ahead. But for now… just know that you’re safe here.” I lay back, my head sinking into the soft pillows. His presence beside me, steady and calm, was like a shield. For the first time in days, I let myself close my eyes and breathe. And for the first time… I felt like I wasn’t completely alone.
