Alex's face burned with anger and humiliation as he recalled what Emmy had done to him. He couldn't shake off the feeling of embarrassment and frustration. Seeking distraction, he called his friend Jake and suggested they grab a drink. "Hey, man, I need to get out of here for a bit. Want to meet up at the bar?" Alex asked, his voice tight with emotion. Jake picked up on Alex's tone and replied, "Yeah, sure thing. What's going on?" Alex hesitated, unsure if he wanted to relive the moment by talking about it. "Just meet me there, okay?" At the bar, Alex recounted to Jake how Emmy embrassed him. He downed drink after drink, trying to drown his humiliation. Jake sat beside him, occasionally chiming in with words of encouragement or sharing a funny story to take Alex's mind off things. As the night wore on, Alex's anger and frustration began to fade, replaced by a numbness that he welcomed. He knew he'd deal with the aftermath of his encounter with Emmy eventually, but for now, he just wanted to forget. The next day Edward called Lynne to invite her for dinner. This time he took her to a famous Italian restaurant not owned by the McDonald's because he didn't want history to repeat itself. It was dimly lit with soft music playing in the background. She looked stunning in her elegant dress, her hair styled perfectly. As they sipped their wine and enjoyed their meal, Edward asked, "So, Lynne, I noticed your usually home. Are you done with school?" Lynne's expression turned somber. "To be honest, Edward, it's just financial struggles. Since my mom blocked all my credit cards. Can't afford to support myself through school." Edward's brow furrowed with concern. "I'm so sorry to hear that. Is there anything I can do to help? Maybe we can look into some financial aid options or scholarships together?" Lynne smiled slightly. "That's really kind of you, Edward. Just talking about it makes me feel a bit better. If I were able to continue school, I'd be so happy. I love learning and want to finish my degree." Edward smiled back. "That's great to hear. If you're willing to continue, I'm sure you'll find a way. You're really determined, Lynne." Lynne's face lit up. "You think so? That actually makes me really happy. Just talking about it makes me feel more positive about finding a solution." Edward's heart skipped a beat as he looked at her, feeling a surge of affection. He took a deep breath, deciding to take a chance. "Lynne, from the moment I met you, I knew there was something special about you," Edward said, taking her hand. "I was wondering if you'd like to be my girlfriend?" Lynne looked at him, surprised. She appreciated the gesture, but she didn't feel the same way. "Edward, you're a great person, but I don't think I'm ready for a relationship," she said gently. Edward's face fell, but he tried to hide his disappointment. "I understand," he said, smiling weakly. "You're an amazing person, Lynne. I hope we can still be friends?" Lynne smiled back, relieved. "Of course, Edward. I'd like that." When they were done with dinner, Edward dropped Lynne at her place. Edward spent the night researching scholarship opportunities for Lynne and found a few potential options. However, most of them required entrance tests. Edward after exploring these options sent them to Lynne. She applied immediately and weeks later she was shortlisted amongst the students offered scholarship into University California, St, Diego. Edward's as he read the email on his phone culd hardly contain his excitement. "Lynne got into UC San Diego!" he exclaimed. He quickly called Lynne to share the news, but she hadn't checked her email yet. "Hey, Lynne! Just saw your admission letter! You're going to UCSD! Let's grab a beer to celebrate. My treat!" Lynne agreed. she was just so excited. A few hours later, Lynne walked into the bar, beaming with joy. "I still can't believe it!" she said, hugging Edward tightly. "Thank you for all your help and support. I couldn't have done it without you." Over beers, they chatted about Lynne's future plans, and Edward couldn't help but feel proud of his friend's achievement. "You're going to rock this, Lynne. I just know it," he said, smiling. Later in the evening, Edward drove Lynne home and they parted ways.Lynne's evening took a drastic turn as she walked into her home to find Emmy lying unconscious on the floor. Panicked, she immediately called Edward. "Please come back, it's Emmy! She's passed out on the floor," Lynne's voice trembled with worry. Edward didn't hesitate. He quickly turned the car around and rushed back to Lynne's place. Upon arrival, he assessed the situation and quickly called for an ambulance. "We need to get her to the hospital now," he said, his voice firm and reassuring. Together, Lynne and Edward stayed by Emmy's side as they waited for the paramedics to arrive. Once the ambulance came, Edward helped the paramedics get Emmy loaded in, and they sped off to the hospital. At the hospital, Lynne and Edward anxiously waited for news about Emmy's condition. Lynne was visibly shaken, her mind racing with worst-case scenarios. Edward stayed by her side, offering what little comfort he could. "We'll get through this, Lynne. Let's just wait and see what the doctors say," he said softly. The lab results came back after an hour, and the doctor delivered the diagnosis: Emmy had stage 2 blood cancer, specifically leukemia. Lynne was in shock , as she looked at Edward, who stood frozen, his face pale. "What does this mean for her treatment?" Lynne asked, trying to stay strong for Emmy's sake. The doctor explained the treatment options, including chemotherapy and possibly a bone marrow transplant. Lynne and Edward exchanged a determined glance, ready to support Emmy through this challenging journey. "We'll do everything we can to help her fight this," Edward said, his voice firm. Lynne nodded in agreement. Lynne stood in the hospital bathroom, the sterile smell and echoing silence amplifying her emotions. She let out a sob, tears streaming down her face as she thought about Emmy's diagnosis. "Why does this keep happening?" she whispered to herself. "I'm cursed. Everyone I care about ends up getting hurt." The weight of her fears and worries poured out in her tears. She felt helpless, wondering if she was somehow to blame for the pain and suffering of those she loved. The sound of her own despairing cry was muffled only by the cold tiles and her own trembling hands covering her mouth.
