chapter 1: going to new York
Mia’s room was a whirlwind of clothes, shoes, and scattered travel guides. Her suitcase lay open on the bed, half-packed, while her best friend Lucy flitted around, tossing items in with the precision of someone who traveled constantly.
“Are you seriously bringing three pairs of heels for just five days?” Lucy asked, raising an eyebrow as she shoved another sleek black boot into the suitcase.
Mia laughed, though her fingers trembled slightly as she folded a delicate silk blouse. “You never know when the city will call for something… dramatic,” she said, her voice soft but filled with anticipation.
Lucy paused, glancing at her friend. “Dramatic, huh? You mean like meeting some mysterious stranger who sweeps you off your feet?” She smirked, teasing, but there was a flicker of curiosity in her eyes.
Mia’s lips curved into a small, secretive smile. She wasn’t about to tell Lucy about the strange dreams she’d been having—the ones of dark, piercing eyes and a presence that both terrified and thrilled her. “Something like that,” she murmured, almost to herself.
The two girls worked in comfortable silence for a few minutes, the quiet punctuated by the occasional snap of a zipper or the soft thud of shoes landing in the suitcase. Outside, the late afternoon sun dipped behind the trees, casting long shadows across Mia’s bedroom. It felt almost like the world was holding its breath, as if it knew this trip would change everything.
Finally, Lucy slung her own bag over her shoulder and looked at Mia with an exaggerated sigh. “Alright, drama queen. New York awaits. Just promise me you won’t do anything crazy, okay?”, her fingers lingering on the pull as if she could somehow hold onto the life she was leaving behind. “I promise… mostly,” she said, her heart racing with a mixture of excitement and something she couldn’t quite name.
Mia zipped the last compartment of her suitcase and looked around her room, the familiar walls suddenly feeling smaller somehow. She grabbed her coat, checked her phone for the umpteenth time, and turned to Lucy.
“Ready?” she asked, trying to sound casual even though her stomach fluttered with excitement.
Lucy gave her a bright, mischievous smile. “As ready as I’ll ever be. And don’t worry, I packed enough snacks to survive a zombie apocalypse, so we’re good.”
They hoisted their suitcases down the stairs, the soft thud of wheels against the floor echoing through the quiet house. The evening air was crisp, carrying a hint of winter that made Mia pull her scarf a little tighter around her neck. She glanced back at the door they were leaving behind, feeling a strange mix of nostalgia and anticipation. This was more than a trip—it felt like a beginning.
The taxi ride to the airport was a blur of city lights and bustling streets. Mia found herself talking more than usual, describing the things she loved about New York: the endless skyline, the hidden cafes tucked into narrow streets, the idea that anything could happen there. Lucy listened, occasionally nodding, occasionally teasing, but always encouraging.
As the plane lifted off the ground, Mia pressed her forehead to the window, watching the city shrink beneath them. “This is it,” she whispered, almost to herself. “A whole new world.”
Lucy nudged her shoulder gently. “Try not to get lost in the crowds, okay?”
Mia laughed softly. “I won’t… I hope.”
Little did she know, New York held more than just bright lights and towering buildings. It held shadows that watched, secrets that waited, and a destiny she hadn’t yet dared to imagine. And in that moment, as the city stretched out beneath them, Mia felt a shiver of both excitement and something she couldn’t name—something thrilling, dangerous, and inevitable.
Mia: sorry I forgot to introduce myself and my bestie here
“Hi, I’m Mia. I’m twenty six, a bit on the shy side at first, but I love exploring new places and meeting new people. I have this curiosity that sometimes gets me into trouble, but it’s also what makes life exciting. I’d say I’m creative—I love writing and sketching whenever I get the chance. Oh, and I’m a little obsessed with books and coffee. Can’t start my day without them!”
“And this is my best friend, Lucy. She’s the complete opposite of me in some ways—super outgoing, fearless, and she has this way of lighting up any room she walks into. She’s funny, a little mischievous, and always ready for an adventure. I can always count on her to make me laugh, even on my worst days. We’ve been through a lot together, and I honestly don’t know what I’d do without her.” that's all I will know for now...
